Investigating students\u27 mental models and knowledge construction of microscopic friction. I. Implications for curriculum design and development

In this paper, we discuss the first phase of a multiphase study aimed at investigating the dynamics of students\u27 knowledge construction in the context of unfamiliar physical phenomenon-microscopic friction. The first phase of this study involved the investigation of the variations in students\u27 mental models of microscopic friction. Clinical interviews were conducted with 11 students enrolled in conceptual modern physics to elicit their ideas and generate themes of explanations. A phenomenographic approach of data analysis was employed to establish the variations in students\u27 explanations. Results show that students\u27 mental models of friction at the atomic level are dominated by their macroscopic experiences. Friction at the atomic level according to most students is due to mechanical interactions (interlocking or rubbing of atoms). © 2011 American Physical Society

The research was conducted to determine the students' learning through an online platform and academic performance in mathematics. The respondents included 192 students sampled using the proportional stratification technique. A three-part questionnaire was administered to the students. The instrument underwent validation and reliability testing using Cronbach's alpha. The test showed that the instrument was highly reliable for the selected population. The majority of responses were 15 to 19 years old, female, and Grade 12. Additionally, most of the students utilized Google Meet with at least two different learning platforms to learn mathematics. Moreover, the students used an online learning platform very often. The study found out that regardless of learners’ profiles, they had similar perceptions toward online learning platforms. However, some specific indicators differed. On average, the students had a very satisfactory performance. Furthermore, the learners' perceptions of online learning platforms were not significantly correlated with their academic performance. However, some specific indicators were significantly correlated, but it had an indirect connection, particularly on their confidence while using online learning content and in using online learning services that could simplify the learning process

Covid-19 has a significant impact on higher education worldwide, not just in the Philippines. This study described the professional quality of life of the college teachers in terms of compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue. This study ascertained the relationship of socio demographic profile of the college teachers and their professional quality of life. This study used a quantitative-descriptive method of research. Convenience sampling was used in this study. A total of 76 college instructors were surveyed (44 from public schools and 32 from private schools). Based on the results of the study, it is concluded that the college teachers have high compassion satisfaction for getting satisfaction from being able to teach people, being proud of what they can do to teach, and being happy to their chosen profession. These college teachers have exposure work related secondary traumatic stress on a moderate degree level by having a feeling of worn out because of their work as a teacher and feeling overwhelmed because of their teaching load and other work-related activities. However, the secondary traumatic stress of college teachers did not result to having high level of burnout, though college teachers still experience burnout but in low degree level only

The State-Moro Armed Conflict in the Philippines: Unresolved national question or question of governance?

The continuing struggle of the Moro secessionist movement in the Philippines is one of Southeast Asia’s longest armed conflicts. The tenacity of the conflict lies in two competing concerns: the assertion of self-determination rights of the Moro separatist movement; and the affirmation of the Philippines’ sovereign right to territorial integrity. However, beneath these rights are crucial issues that remain unanswered both by the contending forces—problems where internecine violence and conflict emanate from. This article argues that self-determination rights can be adequately exercised by people who have clearly defined their national identity and concept of a nation. Unfortunately, the Moro multi-ethnic national identity has yet to be crystallised while the idea of a Bangsamoro (Bangsa Nation) remains weak. On the other hand, the state has yet to address the Moros’ legitimate demands of political autonomy, socio-economic development, and social justice and discrimination. Without underestimating the ethnic component of secessionism, the article concludes that poor governance has prolonged, complicated, and further justified the Moros’ quest to secede from the Republic
