    Real-time software for mobile robot simulation and experimentation in cooperative environments

    This paper presents the software being developed at IRI (Institut de Robotica i Informatica Industrial) for mobile robot autonomous navigation in the context of the European project URUS (Ubiquitous Robots in Urban Settings). In order that a deployed sensor network and robots operating in the environment cooperate in terms of information sharing, main requirements are real-time performance and the integration of information coming from remote machines not onboard the robot. Moreover, the project involves a group of eleven industrial and academic partners, therefore software integration issues are critical. The proposed software framework is based on the YARP middleware and has been tested in real and simulated experiments.Peer Reviewe

    p53 expression in breast cancer predicts tumors with low probability of non-sentinel nodes infiltration.

    AIM: Several predictive tools of non-sentinel lymph nodes neoplastic involvement when a positive sentinel lymph node is found have been described. However, molecular factors have been rarely evaluated to build these tools. The aim of this study was to establish which factors predicted non-sentinel lymph nodes infiltration in our setting, including some molecular factors. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We carried out a retrospective review of 161 patients with breast cancer and a positive sentinel lymph node who had undergone axillary lymph node dissection, none of whom had received neoadjuvant treatment. Features evaluated as predictive factors for non-sentinel node positivity were: menopausal status, tumor size, histological subtype, histological grade, lymphovascular invasion, extracapsular invasion, Ki67 index, hormonal receptors, CerbB2 and p53 expression, size of sentinel lymph node metastases and number of sentinel lymph nodes affected. RESULTS: Tumor size (P = 0.001), size of sentinel lymph node metastases (P = 0.001), lobular invasive carcinoma (P = 0.05) and lymphovascular invasion (P = 0.006) were significantly associated with non-sentinel lymph node positivity. Tumor p53 positive expression was strongly associated with non-sentinel lymph node negativity (P = 0.000). In multivariate analysis, all these factors but tumor size maintained their significance. The discrimination power of the model calculated by the area under the receiver-operator curve was 0.811 (95% confidence interval, 0.741-0.880). CONCLUSION: p53 expression in breast cancer was highly predictive of non-sentinel lymph node negativity in our study.     Autonomous navigation for urban service mobile robots

    We present to the robotic community a fully autonomous navigation solution for mobile robots operating in urban pedestrian areas. We introduce our robots and the experimental zone, overview the architecture of the navigation framework, and present the results after 3.5km of autonomous navigation. We expose the main lessons learnt by the scientific team and identify the issues to improve future works

    Human papillomavirus and breast cancer: no evidence of association in a Spanish set of cases.

    BACKGROUND/AIM: Great controversy exists about the association between Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and breast tumors. The aim of this study was to explore the presence of HPV DNA in a large set of breast cancer cases. MATERIALS AND METHODS:/nTechniques used followed the standards for an international retrospective survey of HPV-DNA genotyping, coordinated by our own group and the DDL Laboratories in Rijswijk, the Netherlands. Paraffin-embedded samples were used. SPF-10 broad-spectrum primers were applied, followed by deoxyribonucleic acid enzyme immunoassay and genotyping by reverse-line probe assay./nRESULTS: A total of 78 samples were included in the study, 2 of benign conditions and 76 carcinomas, including different histological subtypes. HPV was not present in any of the specimens studied irrespective of histology, hormonal status and stage of disease.     Polymorphism AGT2 (rs4762) is involved in the development of dermatologic events: Proof-of-concept in hepatocellular carcinoma patients treated with sorafenib

    BACKGROUNDDermatologic adverse events (DAEs) are associated with a better outcome in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) irrespective of the therapeutic agent received. The exact mechanisms associated with the development of DAEs are unknown although several studies point to direct toxicity of tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) to the skin or an immune-mediated reaction triggered by the oncologic treatment. As is the case in other conditions, individual genetic variants may partially explain a higher risk of DAEs.AIMTo evaluate the contribution of several gene variants to the risk of developing DAEs in HCC patients treated with TKIs.METHODSWe first analyzed 27 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from 12 genes selected as potential predictors of adverse event (AE) development in HCC patients treated with sorafenib [Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer 1 (BCLC1) cohort]. Three additional cohorts were analyzed for AGT/(rs699) and AGT2 (rs4762) polymorphisms-initially identified as predictors of DAEs: BCLC2 (n = 79), Northern Italy (n = 221) and Naples (n = 69) cohorts, respectively. The relation between SNPs and DAEs and death were assessed by univariate and multivariate Cox regression models, and presented with hazard ratios and their 95% confidence intervals (95%CI).RESULTSThe BCLC1 cohort showed that patients with arterial hypertension (AHT) (HR = 1.61; P value = 0.007) and/or AGT SNPs had an increased risk of DAEs. Thereafter, AGT2 (rs4762) AA genotype was found to be linked to a statistically significant increased probability of DAEs (HR = 5.97; P value = 0.0201, AA vs GG) in the Northern Italy cohort by multivariate analysis adjusted for BCLC stage, ECOG-PS, diabetes and AHT. The value of this genetic marker was externally validated in the cohort combining the BCLC1, BCLC2 and Naples cohorts [HR = 3.12 (95%CI: 1.2-8.14), P value = 0.0199, AGT2 (rs4762) AA vs AG genotype and HR = 2.73 (95%CI: 1.18-6.32) P value = 0.0188, AGT2 (rs4762) AA vs GG genotype]. None of the other gene variants tested were found to be associated with the risk of DAE development.CONCLUSIONDAE development in HCC patients receiving TKIs could be explained by the AGT2 (rs4762) gene variant. If validated in other anti-oncogenic treatments, it might be considered a good prognosis marker
