    Patients as researchers - innovative experiences in UK National Health Service research

    Consumer involvement is an established priority in UK health and social care service development and research. To date, little has been published describing the process of consumer involvement and assessing ‘consumers’ contributions to research. This paper provides a practical account of the effective incorporation of consumers into a research team, and outlines the extent to which they can enhance the research cycle; from project development and conduct, through data analysis and interpretation, to dissemination. Salient points are illustrated using the example of their collaboration in a research project. Of particular note were consumers’ contributions to the development of an ethically enhanced, more robust project design, and enriched data interpretation, which may not have resulted had consumers not been an integral part of the research team

    Achieving diffraction-limited performance on the Berkeley MET5

    The Berkeley MET5, funded by EUREKA, is a 0.5-NA EUV projection lithography tool located at the Advanced Light Source at Berkeley National Lab. Wavefront measurements of the MET5 optic have been performed using a custom in-situ lateral shearing interferometer suitable for high-NA interferometry. In this paper, we report on the most recent characterization of the MET5 optic demonstrating an RMS wavefront 0.31 nm, and discuss the specialized mask patterns, gratings, and illumination geometries that were employed to accommodate the many challenges associated with high-NA EUV interferometry

    There are many intellectually able autistic adults who would like to have a better quality of life but who struggle to access advice and support from traditional services. This situation leads to emotional distress and poor outcomes for these individuals and their families and society generally. So services such as the Leeds AIM (Advocacy, Information and Mentoring) service described in this paper have great potential in enhancing the lives of this group and in educating mainstream services on how advice and support might be adjusted to allow better access. In addition, creating good spaces for autistic adults offers opportunities for social contact and friendships with like-minded peers both within and outside the servic

    Development and Initial Validation of an Instrument to Measure Physicians' Use of, Knowledge about, and Attitudes Toward Computers

    This paper describes details of four scales of a questionnaire—“Computers in Medical Care”—measuring attributes of computer use, self-reported computer knowledge, computer feature demand, and computer optimism of academic physicians. The reliability (i.e., precision, or degree to which the scale's result is reproducible) and validity (i.e., accuracy, or degree to which the scale actually measures what it is supposed to measure) of each scale were examined by analysis of the responses of 771 full-time academic physicians across four departments at five academic medical centers in the United States. The objectives of this paper were to define the psychometric properties of the scales as the basis for a future demonstration study and, pending the results of further validity studies, to provide the questionnaire and scales to the medical informatics community as a tool for measuring the attitudes of health care providers

    The variability and seasonality of the environmental reservoir of Mycobacterium bovis shed by wild European badgers

Available from the publisher via the DOI in this record.The incidence of Mycobacterium bovis, the causative agent of bovine tuberculosis, has been increasing in UK cattle herds resulting in substantial economic losses. The European badger (Meles meles) is implicated as a wildlife reservoir of infection. One likely route of transmission to cattle is through exposure to infected badger urine and faeces. The relative importance of the environment in transmission remains unknown, in part due to the lack of information on the distribution and magnitude of environmental reservoirs. Here we identify potential infection hotspots in the badger population and quantify the heterogeneity in bacterial load; with infected badgers shedding between 1 × 10(3)- 4 × 10(5) M. bovis cells g(-1) of faeces, creating a substantial and seasonally variable environmental reservoir. Our findings highlight the potential importance of monitoring environmental reservoirs of M. bovis which may constitute a component of disease spread that is currently overlooked and yet may be responsible for a proportion of transmission amongst badgers and onwards to cattle.We acknowledge funding from Defra, H.C.K. was in receipt of a BBSRC DTG studentship and E.M.W. and O.C. acknowledge support from BBSRC for collaboration with Eamonn Gormley, UCD.     Imaging striae distensae : a comparison between PS-OCT and digital dermoscopy

    Stretch marks or striae distensae (SD) cause emotional distress and negatively affect the psychological well-being of patients. We investigate and compare two methods for quantifying the severity of SD: visual scoring of images captured using a clinical visible-light dermatological camera (C-Cube, Pixience Inc) and measuring the local birefringence of skin using polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography (PS-OCT). Data on skin visually affected by SD and visually normal skin were collected from 19 human volunteers. Our results show a weak correlation between visual scores of the C-Cube images and the birefringence values obtained from the PS-OCT system. SD datasets have a significantly larger birefringence values compared to visually normal datasets
