Quantum transport of two-dimensional Dirac fermions in SrMnBi2
We report two-dimensional quantum transport in SrMnBi single crystals.
The linear energy dispersion leads to the unusual nonsaturated linear
magnetoresistance since all Dirac fermions occupy the lowest Landau level in
the quantum limit. The transverse magnetoresistance exhibits a crossover at a
critical field from semiclassical weak-field dependence to the
high-field linear-field dependence. With increase in the temperature, the
critical field increases and the temperature dependence of
satisfies quadratic behavior which is attributed to the Landau level splitting
of the linear energy dispersion. The effective magnetoresistant mobility
cm/Vs is derived. Angular dependent magnetoresistance
and quantum oscillations suggest dominant two-dimensional (2D) Fermi surfaces.
Our results illustrate the dominant 2D Dirac fermion states in SrMnBi and
imply that bulk crystals with Bi square nets can be used to study low
dimensional electronic transport commonly found in 2D materials like graphene.Comment: 5 papges, 4 figure
Aseptic meningoencephalitis mimicking transient ischaemic attacks
Purpose: To highlight meningoencephalitis as a transient ischaemic attack (TIA) mimic and suggest clinical clues for differential diagnosis. Methods: This was an observational study of consecutively admitted patients over a 9.75-year period presenting as TIAs at a stroke unit. Results: A total of 790 patients with TIAs and seven with TIA-like symptoms but a final diagnosis of viral meningoencephalitis were recognised. The most frequent presentations of meningoencephalitis patients were acute sensory hemisyndrome (6) and cognitive deficits (5). Signs of meningeal irritation were minor or absent on presentation. Predominantly lymphocytic pleocytosis, hyperproteinorachia and a normal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)/serum glucose index (in 5 out of 6 documented patients) were present. Meningeal thickening on a brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan was the only abnormal imaging finding. Six patients received initial vascular treatment; one thrombolysed. Finally, six patients were treated with antivirals and/or antibiotics. Although neither bacterial nor viral agents were identified on extensive testing, viral meningoencephalitis was the best explanation for all clinical and laboratory findings. Conclusions: Aseptic meningoencephalitis should be part of the differential diagnosis in patients presenting as TIA. The threshold for a lumbar puncture in such patients should be set individually and take into account the presence of mild meningeal symptoms, age and other risk factors for vascular disease, the results of brain imaging and the basic diagnostic work-up for a stroke sourc
Phase appearance or disappearance in two-phase flows
This paper is devoted to the treatment of specific numerical problems which
appear when phase appearance or disappearance occurs in models of two-phase
flows. Such models have crucial importance in many industrial areas such as
nuclear power plant safety studies. In this paper, two outstanding problems are
identified: first, the loss of hyperbolicity of the system when a phase appears
or disappears and second, the lack of positivity of standard shock capturing
schemes such as the Roe scheme. After an asymptotic study of the model, this
paper proposes accurate and robust numerical methods adapted to the simulation
of phase appearance or disappearance. Polynomial solvers are developed to avoid
the use of eigenvectors which are needed in usual shock capturing schemes, and
a method based on an adaptive numerical diffusion is designed to treat the
positivity problems. An alternate method, based on the use of the hyperbolic
tangent function instead of a polynomial, is also considered. Numerical results
are presented which demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed solutions
Anisotropic Dirac fermions in a Bi square net of SrMnBi2
We report the highly anisotropic Dirac fermions in a Bi square net of
SrMnBi2, based on a first principle calculation, angle resolved photoemission
spectroscopy, and quantum oscillations for high-quality single crystals. We
found that the Dirac dispersion is generally induced in the (SrBi)+ layer
containing a double-sized Bi square net. In contrast to the commonly observed
isotropic Dirac cone, the Dirac cone in SrMnBi2 is highly anisotropic with a
large momentum-dependent disparity of Fermi velocities of ~ 8. These findings
demonstrate that a Bi square net, a common building block of various layered
pnictides, provide a new platform that hosts highly anisotropic Dirac fermions.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

Self-similarity and power-like tails in nonconservative kinetic models
In this paper, we discuss the large--time behavior of solution of a simple
kinetic model of Boltzmann--Maxwell type, such that the temperature is time
decreasing and/or time increasing. We show that, under the combined effects of
the nonlinearity and of the time--monotonicity of the temperature, the kinetic
model has non trivial quasi-stationary states with power law tails. In order to
do this we consider a suitable asymptotic limit of the model yielding a
Fokker-Planck equation for the distribution. The same idea is applied to
investigate the large-time behavior of an elementary kinetic model of economy
involving both exchanges between agents and increasing and/or decreasing of the
mean wealth. In this last case, the large-time behavior of the solution shows a
Pareto power law tail. Numerical results confirm the previous analysis
On a kinetic model for a simple market economy
In this paper, we consider a simple kinetic model of economy involving both
exchanges between agents and speculative trading. We show that the kinetic
model admits non trivial quasi-stationary states with power law tails of Pareto
type. In order to do this we consider a suitable asymptotic limit of the model
yielding a Fokker-Planck equation for the distribution of wealth among
individuals. For this equation the stationary state can be easily derived and
shows a Pareto power law tail. Numerical results confirm the previous analysis
