    Molecular genotyping of sugarcane clones with microsatellite DNA markers

    Molecular genotypes of 27 sugarcane clones (Saccharum hybrids) were produced with nine sugarcane microsatellites. A total of 52 alleles were identified using a capillary electrophoresis system with 41 alleles displaying varying degrees of polymorphism and the remaining 11 being monomorphic. There were eight alleles for sugarcane microsatellite SMC286CS, five for SMC334BS, eight for SMC336BS, four for SMC713BS, five for mSSCIR5, five for mSSCIR33, five for MCSA042E08, four for MCSA053C10, and eight for MCSA068G08. Presence or absence of these 52 alleles from a clone allowed the assignment of its arbitrary microsatellite genotype. The genetic relatedness among these clones was assessed using the CLUSTAL W algorithm with DNAMAN(R) software based on their arbitrary genotypes. With the exception of four clones, CP 70-321, HoCP 91-555, L 97-137 and Q124, six groups of clones were identified that shared at least 76% homology between their microsatellite genotypes. The software program also produced a bootstrapped phylogenetic tree with branch patterns that in general coincided with the putative pedigrees of these clones. The derivation of molecular genotypes such as these has enable sugarcane geneticists and breeders to verify the genetic pedigrees and purity of their sugarcane populations. These microsatellite genotypes can also aid in progeny selection and facilitate studies on allele transmission in this aneu-polyploidy crop

    Multiclasificadores basados en aprendizaje automático como herramienta para la evaluación del perfil neurotóxico de líquidos iónicos

    Los líquidos iónicos poseen un perfil fisicoquímico único, el cual los provee de un amplio rango de aplicaciones. Su variabilidad estructural casi ilimitada permite su diseño para tareas específicas. Sin embargo, su sustentabilidad, específicamente su seguridad desde el punto de vista toxicológico, ha sido frecuentemente cuestionada. Este último aspecto limita significativamente el cumplimiento de las regulaciones establecidas por la Unión Europea para el registro, evaluación, autorización y restricción de compuestosquímicos (REACH), así como su aplicación final. Debido a que la mayoría de los líquidos iónicos no han sido sintetizados, se hace evidente la importancia del desarrollo de herramientas quimioinformáticas que, de forma eficiente, permitan evaluar el potencial toxicológico de estos compuestos. En este sentido, el uso combinado de múltiples clasificadores ha demostrado superar las limitaciones de desempeño asociadas al uso de clasificadores individuales. En el presente trabajo fueron evaluadas varias estrategias alternativas de multiclasificadores basados en técnicas de aprendizaje automático supervisado, como herramientas para la evaluación del perfil neurotóxico de líquidos iónicos basado en la inhibición de la enzima acetilcolinesterasa, como indicador de neurotoxicidad. Se obtuvieron dos multiclasificadores con una alta capacidad predictiva sobre un conjunto de validación externa (no utilizado en el proceso de aprendizaje de los modelos). De acuerdo a los resultados obtenidos el 96% de un conjunto de nuevos líquidos iónicos podrá ser correctamente clasificado con la utilizaciónde estos multiclasificadores, los cuales constituyen herramientas de toma de decisión útiles en el campo del diseño y desarrollo de nuevos líquidos iónicos sustentables

    Integration of bow-tie plasmonic nano-antennas on tapered fibers

The device is driven by a Q-switched laser and the performance of a fabricated nano-antenna in a quartz slide is tested by a Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) experiment.     Stiff polymer in monomer ensemble

    We make use of the previously developed formalism for a monomer ensemble and include angular dependence of the segments of the polymer chains thus described. In particular we show how to deal with stiffness when the polymer chain is confined to certain regions. We investigate the stiffness from the perspectives of a differential equation, integral equations, or recursive relations for both continuum and lattice models. Exact analytical solutions are presented for two cases, whereas numerical results are shown for a third case.Comment: 10 pages, including 6 figure

    Linking forest cover, soil erosion and mire hydrology to late-Holocene human activity and climate in NW Spain

Because of the wide range of factors involved, understanding these complex links requires long-term multi-proxy approaches and research on the best proxies to focus. A peat core from NW Spain (Cruz do Bocelo mire), spanning the last ~3000 years, has been studied at high resolution by physical (density and loss on ignition (LOI)), geochemical (elemental composition) and palynological (pollen and non-pollen palynomorphs) analyses. Proxies related to mineral matter fluxes from the catchment (lithogenic tracers, Glomus and Entorrhiza), rainfall (Bromine), mire hydrology (HdV-18), human pressure (Cerealia-type, nitrophilous taxa and coprophilous fungi) and forest cover (mesophilous tree taxa) were the most useful to reconstruct the evolution of the mire and its catchment. Forest clearance for farming was one of the main drivers of environmental change from at least the local Iron Age (~2685 cal. yr BP) onwards. The most intense phase of deforestation occurred during Roman and Germanic times and the late Middle Ages. During these phases, the entire catchment was affected, resulting in enhanced soil erosion and severe hydrological modifications of the mire. Climate, especially rainfall, may have also accelerated these processes during wetter periods. However, it is noteworthy that the hydrology of the mire seems to have been insensitive to rainfall variations when mesophilous forest dominated. Abrupt changes were only detected once intense forest clearance commenced during the Iron Age/Roman transition (~2190 cal. yr BP) phase, which represented a tipping point in catchment's ability to buffer impacts.     Polymer depletion interaction between two parallel repulsive walls

    The depletion interaction between two parallel repulsive walls confining a dilute solution of long and flexible polymer chains is studied by field-theoretic methods. Special attention is paid to self-avoidance between chain monomers relevant for polymers in a good solvent. Our direct approach avoids the mapping of the actual polymer chains on effective hard or soft spheres. We compare our results with recent Monte Carlo simulations [A. Milchev and K. Binder, Eur. Phys. J. B 3, 477 (1998)] and with experimental results for the depletion interaction between a spherical colloidal particle and a planar wall in a dilute solution of nonionic polymers [D. Rudhardt, C.     Constituents and antiproliferative activity of extracts from leaves of croton macrobothrys

    Croton macrobothrys Baill, Euphorbiaceae, is a tree from the Atlantic Forest in Southern Brazil, used in traditional medicine and popularly known as "dragon's blood" and "pau-sangue". Leaf n-hexane, dichloromethane and methanol extracts were analyzed by GC/MS and evaluated for their in vitro antiproliferative activity on cell lines 786-0 (kidney), HT-29 (colon), K562 (leukemia), NCI-ADR/RES (drug resistant ovary), NCI-H460 (lung), MCF-7 (mammary), PC-3 (prostate), OVCAR-3 (ovary), U251 (glioma) and UACC-62 (melanoma). The dicloromethane extract exhibited activity against all cell lines at the concentration 25 µg/mL, in particular on cell lines NCI-H460 (GI50 0.33 μg/mL) and K5662 (GI50 0.91 μg/mL).     Anomaly-Free Supersymmetric SO(2N+2)/U(N+1) sigma-Model Based on the SO(2N+1) Lie Algebra of the Fermion Operators

    The extended supersymmetric (SUSY) sigma-model has been proposed on the bases of SO(2N+1) Lie algebra spanned by fermion annihilation-creation operators and pair operators. The canonical transformation, extension of an SO(2N) Bogoliubov transformation to an SO(2N+1) group, is introduced. Embedding the SO(2N+1) group into an SO(2N+2) group and using SO(2N+2)/U(N+1) coset variables, we have investigated the SUSY sigma-model on the Kaehler manifold, the coset space SO(2N+2)/U(N+1). We have constructed the Killing potential, extension of the potential in the SO(2N)/U(N) coset space to that in the SO(2N+2)/U(N+1) coset space. It is equivalent to the generalized density matrix whose diagonal-block part is related to a reduced scalar potential with a Fayet-Ilipoulos term. The f-deformed reduced scalar potential is optimized with respect to vacuum expectation value of the sigma-model fields and a solution for one of the SO(2N+1) group parameters has been obtained. The solution, however, is only a small part of all solutions obtained from anomaly-free SUSY coset models. To construct the coset models consistently, we must embed a coset coordinate in an anomaly-free spinor representation (rep) of SO(2N+2) group and give corresponding Kaehler and Killing potentials for an anomaly-free SO(2N+2)/U(N+1) model based on each positive chiral spinor rep. Using such mathematical manipulation we construct successfully the anomaly-free SO(2N+2)/U(N+1) SUSY sigma-model and investigate new aspects which have never been seen in the SUSY sigma-model on the Kaehler coset space SO(2N)/U(N). We reach a f-deformed reduced scalar potential. It is minimized with respect to the vacuum expectation value of anomaly-free SUSY sigma-model fields. Thus we find an interesting f-deformed solution very different from the previous solution for an anomaly-free SO(2.5+2)/(SU(5+1)*U(1)) SUSY sigma-model.Comment: 24 pages, no fiure
