A study of selected educational phases of the United States Armed Forces Institute
Herein is presented a study of selected educational phases of the United States Armed Forces Institute, located at Madison, Wisconsin, from the date of its establishment to 1 January 1947. The study includes the history, purpose, achievements, and significance of USAFI, along with the conclusions of the author after the study was made.
Up to the present time very little, of a formal nature, has been written regarding USAFI; therefore, most of the material presented bas been taken from files, memoranda, bulletins, forms, and USAFI catalogues.
The author was stationed at USAFI for one year as a navy educational officer and had the opportunity of observing and studying at first hand the work carried on by all Divisions and Sections. Valuable aid and information were received from section chiefs by means of lectures, interviews, and discussions. Background data were also secured from the original and older civilian employees
The author analyses categories such as communication, thought, person-growth, offering deep insights about them. He establishes the dependency between thought and communication, as well as the decisive influence of communication in intelligence development. He shows the mirror-like nature of the self and its imaginary nature

Software Metrics and the Object-Oriented Paradigm
Software metrics are in use to guide current software development practices. As commercial organizations make use of the benefits of the object-oriented paradigm, the desire to apply metrics to that paradigm has logically followed. However, standard procedural metrics are limited in their ability to describe true object-oriented designs and code, and in some aspects fail outright. This paper describes the difficulties in applying standard metrics to object-oriented code and defines a set of metrics which are specifically geared toward the features which make the object-oriented approach unique

The Memorial Addresses Delivered in University Hall, November 26, 1880, at the Funeral of Professor James Craig Watson, … Professor in the University from 1859 to 1879
This is Judge Cooley\u27s tribute to former University of Michigan astronomer Professor James Craig Watson, who died unexpectedly at age 42 and is buried in Forest Hill Cemetery in Ann Arbor. While not specifically related to the law, Cooley memorializes Watson with his ringing prose: ... it was among the stars this great man found his chief delight, and fitting it was that he should do so. He knew the stars as one knows the faces of his friends ... But it is the last few pages of the tribute that Cooley asserts the glory of the State of Michigan and specifically, the University of Michigan: ... here was and always must have been his scientific home. It was the University of Michigan that he had crowned with a garland of stars, and from whose Observatory the lightning had announced his successive discoveries... Cooley\u27s finale quotes the Ordinance of 1787 that the fathers of the Republic bound the people of the territory [of Michigan] by the unalterable law, that \u27Religion, Morality, and Knowledge, being necessary to Good Government and the happiness of mankind, Schools and the means of Education shall forever be encouraged

A multidimensional view? Evaluating the different and combined contributions of diaries and interviews in an exploration of asexual identities and intimacies
This article evaluates the relative contributions of diaries and interviews in multiple methods qualitative research exploring asexual identities and intimacies. Differentiated by three core differences: reflective time-frame (the day just had/lifetime), context (alone/with researcher) and mode (written/verbal), these methods had the potential to generate a multidimensional view of our topics. Using five cases in which data from both interviews and diaries were collected, this article explores how the intermeshed issues of identity and intimacy were constructed in each method, as well as reflecting on what was gained by their combination. Our analysis leads us to conclude that multiple methods do not always produce a fuller or a more rounded picture of individual participants’ lives. Nevertheless, the decision to collect data using different strategies did increase our chances of finding a method that suited individual participants, whether in style or focus
Critical Currents and Vortex States at Fractional Matching Fields in Superconductors with Periodic Pinning
We study vortex states and dynamics in 2D superconductors with periodic
pinning at fractional sub-matching fields using numerical simulations. For
square pinning arrays we show that ordered states form at 1/1, 1/2, and 1/4
filling fractions while only partially ordered states form at other filling
fractions, such as 1/3 and 1/5, in agreement with recent imaging experiments.
For triangular pinning arrays we observe matching effects at filling fractions
of 1/1, 6/7, 2/3, 1/3, 1/4, 1/6, and 1/7. For both square and triangular
pinning arrays we also find that, for certian sub-matching fillings, vortex
configurations depend on pinning strength. For weak pinning, ordering in which
a portion of the vortices are positioned between pinning sites can occur.
Depinning of the vortices at the matching fields, where the vortices are
ordered, is elastic while at the incommensurate fields the motion is plastic.
At the incommensurate fields, as the applied driving force is increased, there
can be a transition to elastic flow where the vortices move along the pinning
sites in 1D channels and a reordering transition to a triangular or distorted
triangular lattice. We also discuss the current-voltage curves and how they
relate to the vortex ordering at commensurate and incommensurate fields.Comment: 14 figure
