Variable stars in the globular cluster M28 (NGC 6626)
We present a new search for variable stars in the Galactic globular cluster
M28 (NGC 6626). The search is based on a series of BVI images obtained with the
SMARTS Consortium's 1.3m telescope at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory,
Chile. The search was carried out using the ISIS v2.2 image subtraction
package. We find a total of 25 variable stars in the field of the cluster, 9
being new discoveries. Of the newly found variables, 1 is an ab-type RR Lyrae
star, 6 are c-type RR Lyrae, and 2 are long-period/semi-regular variables. V22,
previously classified as a type II Cepheid, appears as a bona-fide RRc in our
data. In turn, V20, previously classified as an ab-type RR Lyrae, could not be
properly phased with any reasonable period. The properties of the ab-type RR
Lyrae stars in M28 appear most consistent with an Oosterhoff-intermediate
classification, which is unusual for bona-fide Galactic globulars clusters.
However, the cluster's c-type variables do not clearly support such an
Oosterhoff type, and a hybrid Oosterhoff I/II system is accordingly another
possibility, thus raising the intriguing possibility of multiple populations
being present in M28. Coordinates, periods, and light curves in differential
fluxes are provided for all the detected variables.Comment: A&A, in pres
ALMA observations of the Red Rectangle, a preliminary analysis
We aim to study equatorial disks in rotation and axial outflows in post-AGB
objects, as to disclose the formation and shaping mechanisms in planetary
nebulae. So far, both disks and outflows had not been observed simultaneously.
We have obtained high-quality ALMA observations of 12CO and 13CO J=3-2 and
12CO J=6-5 line emission in the Red Rectangle, the only post-AGB/protoplanetary
object in which a disk in rotation has been mapped up to date.
These observations provide an unprecedented description of the complex
structure of this source. Together with an equatorial disk in rotation, we find
a low-velocity outflow that occupies more or less the region placed between the
disk and the optical X-shaped nebula. From our observations and preliminary
modeling of the data, we confirm the previously known properties of the disk
and obtain a first description of the structure, dynamics, and physical
conditions of the outflow.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
Poisson smooth structures on stratified symplectic spaces
In this paper we introduce the notion of a smooth structure on a stratified
space, the notion of a Poisson smooth structure and the notion of a weakly
symplectic smooth structure on a stratified symplectic space, refining the
concept of a stratified symplectic Poisson algebra introduced by Sjamaar and
Lerman. We show that these smooth spaces possess several important properties,
e.g. the existence of smooth partitions of unity. Furthermore, under mild
conditions many properties of a symplectic manifold can be extended to a
symplectic stratified space provided with a smooth Poisson structure, e.g. the
existence and uniqueness of a Hamiltonian flow, the isomorphism between the
Brylinski-Poisson homology and the de Rham homology, the existence of a
Leftschetz decomposition on a symplectic stratified space. We give many
examples of stratified symplectic spaces possessing a Poisson smooth structure

Ricci Collineations for Non-Degenerate, Diagonal and Spherically Symmetric Ricci Tensors
The expression of the vector field generator of a Ricci Collineation for
diagonal, spherically symmetric and non-degenerate Ricci tensors is obtained.
The resulting expressions show that the time and radial first derivatives of
the components of the Ricci tensor can be used to classify the collineation,
leading to 64 families.

Primer registro de Scelidotheriinae Ameghino (Xenartha, Mylodontidae) del Piso/Edad Chasiquense (Mioceno tardío) de la Argentina
he subfamily Scelidotheriinae constitutes a group of mylodontids widely represented in the Quaternary of South America; however, the fossil record of the Neogene taxa is still scarce. In the present paper, a new specimen of this subfamily, corresponding to a right partial hemimandible with complete dental series, is reported. The material was recovered from the lower levels of the Arenisca Albardón Member of the Loma de Las Tapias Formation (San Juan Province, Argentina), assigned to the late Miocene. This finding represents the first record of a member of the Scelidotheriinae from the Chasicoan Stage/Age and provides new information about the anatomical characteristics and the geographic distribution of the Neogene representatives of this subfamily.La subfamilia Scelidotheriinae constituye un grupo de milodóntidos ampliamente representados en el Cuaternario de América del Sur. Sin embargo, el registro fósil de los taxa del Neógeno es aun escaso. En este trabajo se presenta un nuevo ejemplar de esta subfamilia, correspondiente a un fragmento de hemimandíbula derecha con la serie dentaria completa. El material fue recuperado de los niveles inferiores del Miembro Arenisca Albardón de la Formación Loma de Las Tapias (Provincia de San Juan, Argentina), asignados al Mioceno tardío. Este hallazgo representa el primer registro de un Scelidotheriinae para el Piso/Edad Chasiquense y aporta nueva información sobre las características anatómicas y la distribución geográfica de los representantes neógenos de esta subfamilia
Regulation of Marginal Zone B-Cell Differentiation by MicroRNA-146a.
B-cell development in the bone marrow is followed by specification into functional subsets in the spleen, including marginal zone (MZ) B-cells. MZ B-cells are classically characterized by T-independent antigenic responses and require the elaboration of distinct gene expression programs for development. Given their role in gene regulation, it is not surprising that microRNAs are important factors in B-cell development. Recent work demonstrated that deficiency of the NFκB feedback regulator, miR-146a, led to a range of hematopoietic phenotypes, but B-cell phenotypes have not been extensively characterized. Here, we found that miR-146a-deficient mice demonstrate a reduction in MZ B-cells, likely from a developmental block. Utilizing high-throughput sequencing and comparative analysis of developmental stage-specific transcriptomes, we determined that MZ cell differentiation was impaired due to decreases in Notch2 signaling. Our studies reveal miR-146a-dependent B-cell phenotypes and highlight the complex role of miR-146a in the hematopoietic system
New type II Cepheids from VVV data towards the Galactic center
The Galactic center (GC) is the densest region of the Milky Way. Variability
surveys towards the GC potentially provide the largest number of variable stars
per square degree within the Galaxy. However, high stellar density is also a
drawback due to blending. Moreover, the GC is affected by extreme reddening,
therefore near infrared observations are needed. We plan to detect new variable
stars towards the GC, focusing on type II Cepheids (T2Cs) which have the
advantage of being brighter than RR Lyrae stars. We perform parallel
Lomb-Scargle and Generalized Lomb-Scargle periodogram analysis of the
-band time series of the VISTA variables in the Via Lactea survey, to
detect periodicities. We employ statistical parameters to clean our sample. We
take account of periods, light amplitudes, distances, and proper motions to
provide a classification of the candidate variables. We detected 1,019 periodic
variable stars, of which 164 are T2Cs, 210 are Miras and 3 are classical
Cepheids. We also found the first anomalous Cepheid in this region. We compare
their photometric properties with overlapping catalogs and discuss their
properties on the color-magnitude and Bailey diagrams. We present the most
extensive catalog of T2Cs in the GC region to date. Offsets in E() and
in the reddening law cause very large (1-2 kpc) uncertainties on
distances in this region. We provide a catalog which will be the starting point
for future spectroscopic surveys in the innermost regions of the Galaxy.Comment: A&A, accepte
Some Properties of Entire Functions Associated with L-entire Functions on C(I)
In this paper, let C(I) denote the Banach algebra of all continuous complex-valued functions defined on a close interval I in the set of real numbers, R. The functions having derivatives in the Lorch sense on the whole Banach algebra C(I) are considered and they are called L-entire functions [1, 3]. For each L-entire function on C(I), entire complex functions are associated and the relationship between their orders is studied. Even more, the possibility of locating the solutions of the equation F(f) = 0 from the location of zeros of the associated family of entire functions with F is analyzed too
Electronic States in Diffused Quantum Wells
In the present study we calculate the energy values and the spatial
distributions of the bound electronic states in some diffused quantum wells.
The calculations are performed within the virtual crystal approximation, spin dependent empirical tight-binding model and the surface Green
function matching method. A good agreement is found between our results and
experimental data obtained for AlGaAs/GaAs quantum wells with thermally induced
changes in the profile at the interfaces. Our calculations show that for
diffusion lengths {\AA} the transition (C3-HH3) is not
sensitive to the diffusion length, but the transitions (C1-HH1), (C1-LH1),
(C2-HH2) and (C2-LH2) display large "blue shifts" as L_{D} increases. For
diffusion lengths {\AA} the transitions (C1-HH1) and (C1-LH1)
are less sensitive to the L_{D} changes than the (C3-HH3) transition. The
observed dependence is explained in terms of the bound states spatial
