Reaching the boundary between stellar kinematic groups and very wide binaries. III. Sixteen new stars and eight new wide systems in the beta Pictoris moving group
Aims. We look for common proper motion companions to stars of the nearby
young beta Pictoris moving group. Methods. First, we compiled a list of 185
beta Pictoris members and candidate members from 35 representative works. Next,
we used the Aladin and STILTS virtual observatory tools, and the PPMXL proper
motion and Washington Double Star catalogues to look for companion candidates.
The resulting potential companions were subjects of a dedicated
astro-photometric follow-up using public data from all-sky surveys. After
discarding 67 sources by proper motion and 31 by colour-magnitude diagrams, we
obtained a final list of 36 common proper motion systems. The binding energy of
two of them is perhaps too small to be considered physically bound. Results. Of
the 36 pairs and multiple systems, eight are new, 16 have only one stellar
component previously classified as a beta Pictoris member, and three have
secondaries at or below the hydrogen-burning limit. Sixteen stars are reported
here for the first time as moving group members. The unexpected large number of
high-order multiple systems, 12 triples and two quadruples among 36 systems,
may suggest a biased list of members towards close binaries or an increment of
the high-order-multiple fraction for very wide systems.Comment: A&A in pres
Inoculant Effects on Ensiling and \u3ci\u3ein Vitro\u3c/i\u3e Gas Production in Lucerne Silage
Inoculants are the most common additives used in making silage. While inoculant effects on fermentation and dry matter (DM) recovery are understood, animal performance effects are often greater than expected. In vitro analyses may help uncover how inoculants affect rumen fermentation and ultimately dairy cattle performance. Our objective was to study how inoculation of lucerne silage affected in vitro gas production
New type II Cepheids from VVV data towards the Galactic center
The Galactic center (GC) is the densest region of the Milky Way. Variability
surveys towards the GC potentially provide the largest number of variable stars
per square degree within the Galaxy. However, high stellar density is also a
drawback due to blending. Moreover, the GC is affected by extreme reddening,
therefore near infrared observations are needed. We plan to detect new variable
stars towards the GC, focusing on type II Cepheids (T2Cs) which have the
advantage of being brighter than RR Lyrae stars. We perform parallel
Lomb-Scargle and Generalized Lomb-Scargle periodogram analysis of the
-band time series of the VISTA variables in the Via Lactea survey, to
detect periodicities. We employ statistical parameters to clean our sample. We
take account of periods, light amplitudes, distances, and proper motions to
provide a classification of the candidate variables. We detected 1,019 periodic
variable stars, of which 164 are T2Cs, 210 are Miras and 3 are classical
Cepheids. We also found the first anomalous Cepheid in this region. We compare
their photometric properties with overlapping catalogs and discuss their
properties on the color-magnitude and Bailey diagrams. We present the most
extensive catalog of T2Cs in the GC region to date. Offsets in E() and
in the reddening law cause very large (1-2 kpc) uncertainties on
distances in this region. We provide a catalog which will be the starting point
for future spectroscopic surveys in the innermost regions of the Galaxy.Comment: A&A, accepte
Non Singular Origin of the Universe and its Present Vacuum Energy Density
We consider a non singular origin for the Universe starting from an Einstein
static Universe, the so called "emergent universe" scenario, in the framework
of a theory which uses two volume elements and , where is a metric independent density, used as an additional
measure of integration. Also curvature, curvature square terms and for scale
invariance a dilaton field are considered in the action. The first order
formalism is applied. The integration of the equations of motion associated
with the new measure gives rise to the spontaneous symmetry breaking (S.S.B) of
scale invariance (S.I.). After S.S.B. of S.I., it is found that a non trivial
potential for the dilaton is generated. In the Einstein frame we also add a
cosmological term that parametrizes the zero point fluctuations. The resulting
effective potential for the dilaton contains two flat regions, for relevant for the non singular origin of the Universe,
followed by an inflationary phase and , describing
our present Universe. The dynamics of the scalar field becomes non linear and
these non linearities are instrumental in the stability of some of the emergent
universe solutions, which exists for a parameter range of values of the vacuum
energy in , which must be positive but not very big,
avoiding the extreme fine tuning required to keep the vacuum energy density of
the present universe small. Zero vacuum energy density for the present universe
defines the threshold for the creation of the universe.Comment: 28 pages, short version of this paper awarded an honorable mention by

A large sample of 960 RR Lyrae of type ab (RRab) stars were discovered. A catalog is presented featuring the positions, magnitudes, colors, periods, and amplitudes for the sample, in addition to estimated reddenings, distances, and metallicities, and measured individual relative proper motions. We use the reddening-corrected Wesenheit magnitudes, defined as WKs Ks 0.428 J Ks = - ( - ), in order to isolate bona fide RRL belonging to the Galaxy Center, finding that 30 RRab are foreground/background objects. We measure a range of extinctions from AKs 0.19 = to 1.75 mag for the RRab in this region, finding that large extinction is the main cause of the sample incompleteness. The mean period is P =0.5446±0.0025 days, yielding a mean metallicity of [Fe/H] =-1.30±0.01 (Ï = 0.33) dex for the RRab sample in the Galactic Center region. The median distance for the sample is D =8.05±0.02 kpc. We measure the RRab surface density using the less reddened region sampled here, finding a density of 1000 RRab/sq deg at a projected Galactocentric distance RG =1.6 deg. Under simple assumptions, this implies a large total mass (M>109Me) for the old and metal-poor population contained inside RG. We also measure accurate relative proper motions, from which we derive tangential velocity dispersions of ÏVl =125.0 and ÏVb =124.1 km s-1 along the Galactic longitude and latitude coordinates, respectively. The fact that these quantities are similar indicate that the bulk rotation of the RRab population is negligible, and implies that this population is supported by velocity dispersion. In summary, there are two main conclusions of this study. First, the population as a whole is no different from the outer bulge RRab, predominantly a metal-poor component that is shifted with respect to the Oosterhoff type I population defined by the globular clusters in the halo. Second, the RRab sample, as representative of the old and metal-poor stellar population in the region, has high velocity dispersions and zero rotation, suggesting a formation via dissipational collapse. ©2018. Submillimeter polarisation and magnetic field properties in the envelopes of proto-planetary nebulae CRL 618 and OH 231.8+4.2
We have carried out continuum and line polarisation observations of two
Proto-planetary nebulae (PPNe), CRL 618 and OH 231.8+4.2, using the
Submillimeter Array (SMA) in its compact configuration. The frequency range of
observations, 330-345 GHz, includes the CO(J=3-2) line emission. CRL 618 and OH
231.8+4.2 show quadrupolar and bipolar optical lobes, respectively, surrounded
by a dusty envelope reminiscent of their AGB phase. We report a detection of
dust continuum polarised emission in both PPNe above 4 sigma but no molecular
line polarisation detection above a 3 sigma limit. OH 231.8+4.2 is slightly
more polarised on average than CRL 618 with a mean fractional polarisation of
4.3 and 0.3 per cent, respectively. This agrees with the previous finding that
silicate dust shows higher polarisation than carbonaceous dust. In both
objects, an anti-correlation between the fractional polarisation and the
intensity is observed. Neither PPNe show a well defined toroidal equatorial
field, rather the field is generally well aligned and organised along the polar
direction. This is clearly seen in CRL 618 while in the case of OH 231.8+4.2,
the geometry indicates an X-shaped structure coinciding overall with a
dipole/polar configuration. However in the later case, the presence of a
fragmented and weak toroidal field should not be discarded. Finally, in both
PPNe, we observed that the well organised magnetic field is parallel with the
major axis of the 12CO outflow. This alignment could indicate the presence of a
magnetic outflow launching mechanism. Based on our new high resolution data we
propose two scenarios to explain the evolution of the magnetic field in evolved
stars.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures and 1 table. Accepted for publication in the

Variable stars in Terzan 5: additional evidence of multi-age and multi-iron stellar populations
Terzan 5 is a complex stellar system in the Galactic bulge, harboring stellar
populations with very different iron content ({\Delta}[Fe/H] ~1 dex) and with
ages differing by several Gyrs. Here we present an investigation of its
variable stars. We report on the discovery and characterization of three RR
Lyrae stars. For these newly discovered RR Lyrae and for six Miras of known
periods we provide radial velocity and chemical abundances from spectra
acquired with X-SHOOTER at the VLT. We find that the three RR Lyrae and the
three short period Miras (P<300 d) have radial velocity consistent with being
Terzan 5 members. They have sub-solar iron abundances and enhanced
[{\alpha}/Fe], well matching the age and abundance patterns of the 12 Gyr
metal-poor stellar populations of Terzan 5. Only one, out of the three long
period (P>300 d) Miras analyzed in this study, has a radial velocity consistent
with being Terzan 5 member. Its super-solar iron abundance and solar-scaled
[{\alpha}/Fe] nicely match the chemical properties of the metal rich stellar
population of Terzan 5 and its derived mass nicely agrees with being several
Gyrs younger than the short period Miras. This young variable is an additional
proof of the surprising young sub-population discovered in Terzan 5.Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures, in press on the Ap
