A COMMUNICATION GUIDE FOR EX-OFFENDERS

Incarceration rates and the release rate of ex-offenders into the community are both increasing. Studies have shown, on a consistent basis, that, while incarcerated, ex-offenders experience lower literacy levels than the general population, suffer emotional and mental distress from a harsh prison life, and suffer from the negative effects of public perception. Ex-offender anger abounds. These factors interfere with an inmate’s ability to communicate effectively. Notwithstanding, upon release from custody, how do we help such ex-offenders communicate? Many handbooks exist to help former inmates. However, the vast majority only offer assistance with locating government social services agencies, obtaining documents, and helping with jobs. A few offer help with finding mentors. However virtually none assist with communication techniques. Utilizing clear and simple language, A Communication Guide for Ex-Offenders fills this gap. The guide consists of three sections: the first defines basic concepts of communication, including contextual and cultural aspects. Additionally, it contains information on how ex-offenders can communicate more effectively despite suffering from various mental and emotional issues. Finally, a theoretical application focuses on the importance of disclosing information and making a favorable impression. At the end of each section, there is a review of concepts. This manual will also contain two new features in the application of communication studies and the ex-offender population: A communication ‘Bill of Rights’ for ex-offenders and a pledge on ex-offender responsibilitie

The Relationship of Motivation and Perceived Parental Encouragement with English Oral Skills Achievement of Grades 6 to 8 Students at Kpis International School, Bangkok

 The purpose of this study was to determine the level of KPIS International School Grades 6-8 students’ motivation, perceived parental encouragement and achievement in learning English oral skills as well as their relationship with each other. A motivation questionnaire was used to collect data from 81 Grades 6-8 students studying Language Arts in the academic year 2016 - 2017 at KPIS International School. Means, standard deviations, multiple correlation coefficient and multiple linear regression were used to analyze the data. The findings showed that the respondents had a slightly high level of motivation, perceived parental encouragement and English oral skills achievement. Amongst the subscale of motivation, students were mostly motivated integratively, followed by instrumentally and were least motivated by their attitudes to the learning situation. The relationships among the variables were investigated and it was found that all three had significant positive relationships with each other. Between motivation and perceived parental encouragement, motivation had a stronger relationship and could explain a higher percentage of variance of English oral skills achievement

Efectos de ciclos de precios de metales: estimación de un modelo de equilibrio general con time to build para la economía peruana, 2001-2015

En el presente documento se estudia el desempeño que ha tenido Perú durante la última fase expansiva del ciclo de precios de commodities, específicamente entre los años 2001 y 2015. Para esto, se desarrolla un modelo de equilibrio general estocástico y dinámico, basado en Medina y Soto (2007) y Fornero y Kichner (2014), que incorpora un sector productor de commodities con inversión del tipo time to build. El modelo es estimado de forma lineal y a partir de este se muestra la importancia que tienen los choques de precios commodities sobre el resto de la actividad económica. Asimismo, se analizan distintos tipos de políticas fiscales y monetarias, ante este tipo de choques. También se obtienen políticas monetarias óptimas a partir de la función de pérdida de la autoridad monetaria. Los resultados de la investigación apuntan a que, cuando hay un incremento en el precio de los commodities, se genera una dinámica procíclica en el valor de la producción de todos los sectores, en la inversión, el consumo y el gasto del Gobierno. Además, se encuentra que la incorporación del mecanismo de time to build permite explicar mejor la dinámica observada. Dicho mecanismo ayuda a comprender que el choque en cuestión demora en propagarse, ya que los proyectos mineros toman tiempo en construirse. Este aporte metodológico es de particular relevancia en los ejercicios de modelamiento y predicción que se quieran realizar sobre la economía peruana

Resolution enhancement for drill-core hyperspectral mineral mapping

Drill-core samples are a key component in mineral exploration campaigns, and their rapid and objective analysis is becoming increasingly important. Hyperspectral imaging of drill-cores is a non-destructive technique that allows for non-invasive and fast mapping of mineral phases and alteration patterns. The use of adapted machine learning techniques such as supervised learning algorithms allows for a robust and accurate analysis of drill-core hyperspectral data. One of the remaining challenge is the spatial sampling of hyperspectral sensors in operational conditions, which does not allow us to render the textural and mineral diversity that is required to map minerals with low abundances and fine structures such as veins and faults. In this work, we propose a methodology in which we implement a resolution enhancement technique, a coupled non-negative matrix factorization, using hyperspectral, RGB images and high-resolution mineralogical data to produce mineral maps at higher spatial resolutions and to improve the mapping of minerals. The results demonstrate that the enhanced maps not only provide better details in the alteration patterns such as veins but also allow for mapping minerals that were previously hidden in the hyperspectral data due to its low spatial sampling

El fundherentismo: la epistemología de Susan Haack

In this article, the author wishes to present Susan Haack’s epistemological proposal that aims to locate it in the middle between foundationalism and coherentism. The foundationalism asserts the existence of fundamental core beliefs. Instead coherentism believes consistency is enough to justifybeliefs. Haack sees insufficient both proposals and presents a new model to save the best of the other two: the foundherentism. The author explains that this proposal is directed towards two objectives: the problem of the justification of our beliefs and the problem of truth. Since the proposal itself is interesting, but it’s more interesting to see this new epistemology makes by a woman philosopher, with new visions and new perspectives as her contribution.En este artículo, el autor desea presentar la propuesta epistemológica de Susan Haack la misma que pretende ubicarse en el intermedio entre el fundacionalismo y el coherentismo. El fundacionalismo sostiene la existencia de creencias básicas fundamentales. El coherentismo en cambio cree suficiente la coherencia como justificación de las creencias. Haack encuentra insuficientes ambas propuestas y presenta un nuevo modelo que salve lo mejor de los otros dos: el  fundherentismo. El autor explica que dicha propuesta se dirige hacia dos objetivos: el problema de la justificación de nuestras creencias y  el problema de la verdad. Ya la propuesta misma es interesante, pero es más relevante ver esta nueva mirada para la epistemología cuando consideramos que viene de parte de una filósofa con sus nuevas visiones y nuevas perspectivas como su aporte

Una propuesta pragmatista para la unificación metodológica de la ciencia

In this article, the author shows an aspect of Dewey's understanding shown towards science, specifically its unique method claim. While at first this methodological monism was represented by the action of 'thinking', later was conceptualized with the word 'investigate'. In the first section, the author interprets the first identification of thinking and the only method, then, in a second section to show what Dewey means to investigate the method. In a third section the author faces the positive impact on science taking a unique approach by addressing the confrontational positions proposed different methods to maintain the natural sciences and the sciences.En este artículo, el autor se propone mostrar un aspecto de la comprensión que Dewey manifiesta hacia la ciencia, específicamente, su reclamo del método único. Si bien en un primer momento este monismo metodológico fue representado con la acción de 'pensar', más adelante quedó conceptualizado con el verbo 'investigar'. En una primera sección, el autor interpreta esa primera identificación entre el pensar y el método único, para luego, en una segunda sección, mostrar lo que para Dewey significa que investigar sea el método. En una tercera sección enfrenta el autor las repercusiones positivas de asumir en la ciencia un método único encarando las posturas confrontacionales que proponen mantener métodos distintos para las ciencias de la naturaleza y para las ciencias del espíritu

In rocky shores, desiccation is triggered by daily tide changes, and experimental evidence suggests that local distribution of algal species across the intertidal rocky zone is related to their capacity to tolerate desiccation. In this context, the permanence of Pyropia columbina in the high intertidal rocky zone is explained by its exceptional physiological tolerance to desiccation. This study explored the metabolic pathways involved in tolerance to desiccation in the Chilean P. columbina, by characterizing its transcriptome under contrasting conditions of hydration. We obtained 1,410 ESTs from two subtracted cDNA libraries in naturally hydrated and desiccated fronds. Results indicate that transcriptome from both libraries contain transcripts from diverse metabolic pathways related to tolerance. Among the transcripts differentially expressed, 15% appears involved in protein synthesis, processing and degradation, 14.4% are related to photosynthesis and chloroplast, 13.1% to respiration and mitochondrial function (NADH dehydrogenase and cytochrome c oxidase proteins), 10.6% to cell wall metabolism, and 7.5% are involved in antioxidant activity, chaperone and defense factors (catalase, thioredoxin, heat shock proteins, cytochrome P450). Both libraries highlight the presence of genes/proteins never described before in algae. This information provides the first molecular work regarding desiccation tolerance in P. columbina, and helps, to some extent, explaining the classical patterns of ecological distribution described for algae across the intertidal zone.http://ref.scielo.org/jm5rc
