    Four spot megrim (Lepidorhombus boscii) is widely distributed in Atlantic waters form Iceland to Cape Bojador. In ICES Divisions VIIIc and IXa, Portuguese and Spanish ships captured this species as by-catch mainly in mixed bottom trawl fisheries. Only one exploitation unit of this species is assessed (from Divisions VIIIc and IXa) in the ICES Working Group of Hake, Monk and Megrim. Discard data are not used in the assessment of this species, though they are considered significantly high for younger ages. Discards data are available for Spanish trawlers for 1993, 1994, 1997, and the period from 1999 to 2001. A simulation using discard data was made to avoid the underestimation of mortality and recruitment. Due to the change in January 1990 in the minimum legal size for this species in this area, it was decided not to use historical information previous to this year, as it is supposed that this change could substantially affect the fleet discard pattern. Different options were considered as the way of raising: by effort (number of trips, hour of trawling) or by landings (in weight or in number). Reasons for the final choices are explained for all options considered. The way to introduce discards data in the VPA procedure for assessment was through the catch at age matrix since we considered that no fish of this species survive after being discarded.     High Levels of Academic Procrastination do not Influence the Academic Performance of Nursing Students during Internship

    Introducción: La procrastinación académica (AP) es un fenómeno global que afecta significativamente a los estudiantes universitarios, influyendo potencialmente en su rendimiento académico y bienestar mental. Objetivo: Investigar la relación entre los niveles de procrastinación académica y el rendimiento académico de estudiantes de enfermería durante su pasantía en el Perú. Métodos: Se realizó un estudio transversal, involucrando a 112 pasantes de enfermería, de 18 años y más, matriculados en el semestre 2019-I. Los participantes completaron la Escala de Procrastinación Académica (EPA), una escala tipo Likert que consta de 12 ítems, que midió dos dimensiones: autorregulación académica (9 ítems) y procrastinación de actividades (3 ítems). Se utilizó una puntuación umbral de 36 puntos para identificar altos niveles de procrastinación académica. El rendimiento académico se evaluó en una escala de 0 a 10 (reprobado), 11 a 14 (aprobado), 15 a 17 (notable) y 18 a 20 (sobresaliente). Resultados: La edad media de los participantes fue de 29 años, siendo el 88,4% mujeres. El estudio encontró que el 72,3% de los estudiantes de enfermería exhibieron niveles más altos de AP, particularmente entre las mujeres (62,5%) y los estudiantes más jóvenes (59,8%). A escala global, el 70,3% de los estudiantes obtuvo una calificación notable, y el 51,8% de estos estudiantes también exhibió un alto nivel de AP. Sin embargo, no se encontraron diferencias significativas en el rendimiento académico según el nivel de AP (p=0,918). Conclusión: Aunque los estudiantes de enfermería mostraron un mayor nivel de AP, este estudio no encontró una asociación significativa entre la procrastinación académica y el rendimiento académico durante el período de prácticas. Sin embargo, es crucial monitorear la AP en estudiantes de enfermería a lo largo de sus estudios para identificar factores potenciales que puedan contribuir a su impacto y desarrollar estrategias para mitigar sus efectos

    The Analyticity of a Generalized Ruelle's Operator

    In this work we propose a generalization of the concept of Ruelle operator for one dimensional lattices used in thermodynamic formalism and ergodic optimization, which we call generalized Ruelle operator, that generalizes both the Ruelle operator proposed in [BCLMS] and the Perron Frobenius operator defined in [Bowen]. We suppose the alphabet is given by a compact metric space, and consider a general a-priori measure to define the operator. We also consider the case where the set of symbols that can follow a given symbol of the alphabet depends on such symbol, which is an extension of the original concept of transition matrices from the theory of subshifts of finite type. We prove the analyticity of the Ruelle operator and present some examples

    Physical activity and sex modulate obesity risk linked to 3111T/C gene variant of the CLOCK gene in an elderly population: the SUN Project

    Genetic factors may interact with physical activity levels to modify obesity risk. Our aim was to explore the effect of rs1801260 SNP (3111T/C) of CLOCK gene, on obesity risk and to examine their interaction with lifestyle factors in an elderly population of the SUN Project. Subjects (n=903, aged 69±6) were recruited from the SUN (“Seguimiento Universidad de Navarra”) Project. DNA was obtained from saliva and lifestyle and dietary data were collected by validated self-reported questionnaires. Genotyping was assessed by RT-PCR plus allele discrimination. A significant interaction between the 3111T/C SNP of CLOCK gene and sex for overweight/obesity risk was observed (p for interaction [Sex*CLOCK] interaction <0.001). Our results showed that women carrying the C allele of CLOCK gene had a decreased overweight/obesity risk compared to non carrier -TT- subjects (OR 0.61, 95% CI: 0.36-1.04, p=0.069). Moreover, the protective effect of the 3111T/C gene variant may be enhanced in those women with a high physical activity practice. We found that women practicing more than 16.8 METs- h/week had a significantly lower overweight/obesity risk (OR 0.36, 95%CI: 0.17-0.79, p=0.011). A significant interaction between the 3111T/C gene variant and physical activity for overweight/obesity risk was observed in women (p for [PA x CLOCK] interaction=0.015). In conclusion, it appears that physical activity levels may act as an effect modifier for overweight/obesity risk linked to the 3111T/C SNP (rs1801260) of the CLOCK gene in an elderly population of the SUN Project

    Regulación de la Expresión del Factor de Transcripción Pdx1 por Altas Concentraciones de Óxido Nítrico en Células Madre Embrionarias de Ratón

    Estudios previos en nuestro laboratorio muestran que el óxido nítrico a altas concentraciones promueve la diferenciación de células madre embrionarias de ratón (mESC), e induce la expresión de genes de endodermo, entre ellos el factor de transcripción Pdx1, “Pancreas/duodenum homeobox protein 1”. Pdx1, tiene un rol importante en el desarrollo embrionario del páncreas y en la células beta madura. Con el fin de conocer los mecanismos por los que el NO incrementa la expresión de Pdx1, hemos estudiado la región promotora de este gen, encontrando que la expresión de Pdx1 se asocia con la liberación del factor de transcripción Egr1. Además, análisis epigenéticos del promotor muestran que la expresión de Pdx1 va asociada a un cambio en el patrón de metilación de su promotor y a la ocupación de marcas de histonas activadoras (H3Ac y H3K4me3) y a la desocupación de modificadores represores de histonas (HDAC) en el promotor de Pdx1

    A Conformation Selective Mode of Inhibiting SRC Improves Drug Efficacy and Tolerability

    43 p.-5 fig.Despite the approval of several multikinase inhibitors that target SRC and the overwhelming evidence of the role of SRC in the progression and resistance mechanisms of many solid malignancies, inhibition of its kinase activity has thus far failed to improve patient outcomes. Here we report the small molecule eCF506 locks SRC in its native inactive conformation, thereby inhibiting both enzymatic and scaffolding functions that prevent phosphorylation and complex formation with its partner FAK. This unprecedented mechanism of action resulted in highly potent and selective pathway inhibition, in culture and in vivo. Treatment with eCF506 resulted in increased antitumor efficacy and tolerability in syngeneic murine cancer models, demonstrating significant therapeutic advantages over existing SRC/ABL inhibitors.     Statistical Significance of Precisely Repeated Intracellular Synaptic Patterns

    Can neuronal networks produce patterns of activity with millisecond accuracy? It may seem unlikely, considering the probabilistic nature of synaptic transmission. However, some theories of brain function predict that such precision is feasible and can emerge from the non-linearity of the action potential generation in circuits of connected neurons. Several studies have presented evidence for and against this hypothesis. Our earlier work supported the precision hypothesis, based on results demonstrating that precise patterns of synaptic inputs could be found in intracellular recordings from neurons in brain slices and in vivo. To test this hypothesis, we devised a method for finding precise repeats of activity and compared repeats found in the data to those found in surrogate datasets made by shuffling the original data. Because more repeats were found in the original data than in the surrogate data sets, we argued that repeats were not due to chance occurrence. Mokeichev et al. (2007) challenged these conclusions, arguing that the generation of surrogate data was insufficiently rigorous. We have now reanalyzed our previous data with the methods introduced from Mokeichev et al. (2007). Our reanalysis reveals that repeats are statistically significant, thus supporting our earlier conclusions, while also supporting many conclusions that Mokeichev et al. (2007) drew from their recent in vivo recordings. Moreover, we also show that the conditions under which the membrane potential is recorded contributes significantly to the ability to detect repeats and may explain conflicting results. In conclusion, our reevaluation resolves the methodological contradictions between Ikegaya et al. (2004) and Mokeichev et al. (2007), but demonstrates the validity of our previous conclusion that spontaneous network activity is non-randomly organized
