    Transient dynamic analysis of high-speed lightly loaded cylindrical roller bearings. 2: Computer program and results

    The governing differential equations of motion for a high speed cylindrical roller bearing are programmed for numerical solution and plotted output. This computer program has the capability of performing a two dimensional or three dimensional simulation. Two numerical solutions of the governing differential equations were obtained to simulate the motion of a roller bearing, one for the two dimensional equations of motion and one for the three dimensional equations of motion. Computer generated plots were obtained and present such data as roller/cage interaction forces, roller/race traction forces, roller/race relative slip velocities and cage angular speed over a nondimensional time equivalent to 1.2 revolutions of the inner race. Roller axial displacement, roller skew angle, and skew moment are also plotted for the three dimensional solution. The trajectory of the cage center is plotted for both the two dimensional and three dimensional solutions

    Parental Perceptions of Mobile Device Learning for Students in Special Education

    The purpose of this generic qualitative study was to explore parentsâ perceptions of the use of mobile devices as tools for learning for their children in special education settings. Research literature on mobile-device use in special education indicates that little is known regarding parentsâ perception of mlearning. While studies provided information on teachersâ perspectives of mlearning in their special education classrooms, parentsâ perspectives on mlearning to support their childrenâs needs remained unexplored. The conceptual frameworks used included Rogersâs diffusion of innovation theory and Hoover-Dempsey and Sandlerâs theory of parental involvement. Individual semistructured interviews of eight parents of elementary students in special education were conducted to explore parentsâ perceptions of the use of mobile devices as tools for learning for students in special education. After interviews were conducted, audio recordings were transcribed, coded, and analyzed using thematic inductive analysis. Through data collection and analysis, this study identified four main themes of parental perspectives relative to mlearning for students in special education. Parents affirmed their approval of mlearning overall, but not as a primary source for learning due to needs including modeling, human interaction, and novice skill. This research may provide perspective regarding the alignment between at-home and in-school use of mobile devices for learning. This insight may also lead to positive social change and overall advancement in mlearning for students in special education and the mobile learning experiences of their families by providing parent-caretakers with strategies for more effective mlearning for their children in special education class settings

    The Effects of Surface Irregularities on the Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication of Sliding Line Contacts. Part I- Single Irregularities

    A full line contact solution, under isothermal conditions, is obtained in which the Introduction The topography of the surfaces in concentrated contact influences the lubrication process and the associated stress field in the solids, which can significantly contribute to both surface-initiated fatigue failures and scuffing failures of mechanical elements. Surface-initiated fatigue failures can take place as the result of asperity interactions that cause plastic deformation and subsequent micropitting and microcracking of the surfaces. Such failures can also take place as the result of manufacturing processes or service related surface defects. Surface topography is also intimately connected to the events initiating scuffing. The localized surface damage is caused by the solid-phase welding of interacting asperities and the consequent tearing of these welds due to the relative motion of the surfaces. The dominating importance of both surface-initiated fatigue failures and scuffing failures in concentrated contacts has served to increase interest in the study of the effects of surface roughness and surface defects on the lubrication mechanics as it relates to these failures

    Oral Antimicrobial Peptides and Biological Control of Caries

    The presence of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) in saliva may be a biological factor that contributes to susceptibility or resistance to caries. This manuscript will review AMPs in saliva, consider their antimicrobial and immunomodulatory functions, and evaluate their potential role in the oral cavity for protection of the tooth surface as well as the oral mucosa. These AMPs are made in salivary gland and duct cells and have broad antimicrobial activity. Alpha-defensins and LL37 are also released by neutrophils into the gingival crevicular fluid. Both sources may account for their presence in saliva. A recent study in middle school children aimed to determine a possible correlation between caries prevalence in children and salivary concentrations of the antimicrobial peptides human beta-defensin-3 (hBD-3), the cathelicidin, LL37, and the alpha-defensins. The levels of these AMPs were highly variable in the population. While levels of LL37 and hBD-3 did not correlate with caries experience, the mean alpha-defensin level was significantly higher in children with no caries than in children with caries (p < 0.005). We conclude that several types of AMPs that may have a role in oral health are present in unstimulated saliva. Low salivary levels of alpha-defensin may represent a biological factor that contributes to caries susceptibility. Our observation could lead to new ways to prevent caries and to a new tool for caries risk assessment

    Despite being expensive, the standard combination of pegylated interferon (Peg-IFN)- α and ribavirin used to treat chronic hepatitis C (CH) results in a moderate clearance rate and a plethora of side effects. This makes it necessary to predict patient outcome so as to improve the accuracy of treatment. Although the antiviral mechanism of genetically altered IL28B is unknown, IL28B polymorphism is considered a good predictor of IFN combination treatment outcome

    The material soul: Strategies for naturalising the soul in an early modern epicurean context

    We usually portray the early modern period as one characterised by the ‘birth of subjectivity’ with Luther and Descartes as two alternate representatives of this radical break with the past, each ushering in the new era in which ‘I’ am the locus of judgements about the world. A sub-narrative called ‘the mind-body problem’ recounts how Cartesian dualism, responding to the new promise of a mechanistic science of nature, “split off” the world of the soul/mind/self from the world of extended, physical substance—a split which has preoccupied the philosophy of mind up until the present day. We would like to call attention to a different constellation of texts—neither a robust ‘tradition’ nor an isolated ‘episode’, somewhere in between—which have in common their indebtedness to, and promotion of an embodied, Epicurean approach to the soul. These texts follow the evocative hint given in Lucretius’ De rerum natura that ‘the soul is to the body as scent is to incense’ (in an anonymous early modern French version). They neither assert the autonomy of the soul, nor the dualism of body and soul, nor again a sheer physicalism in which ‘intentional’ properties are reduced to the basic properties of matter. Rather, to borrow the title of one of these treatises (L’Âme Matérielle), they seek to articulate the concept of a material soul. We reconstruct the intellectual development of a corporeal, mortal and ultimately material soul, in between medicine, natural philosophy and metaphysics, including discussions of Malebranche and Willis, but focusing primarily on texts including the 1675 Discours anatomiques by the Epicurean physician Guillaume Lamy; the anonymous manuscript from circa 1725 entitled L’Âme Matérielle, which is essentially a compendium of texts from the later seventeenth century (Malebranche, Bayle) along with excerpts from Lucretius; and materialist writings such Julien Offray de La Mettrie’s L’Homme-Machine (1748), in order to articulate this concept of a ‘material soul’ with its implications for notions of embodiment, materialism and selfhood

    Innate immunity glycoprotein gp-340 variants may modulate human susceptibility to dental caries

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Bacterial adhesion is an important determinant of colonization and infection, including dental caries. The salivary scavenger receptor cysteine-rich glycoprotein gp-340, which mediates adhesion of <it>Streptococcus mutans </it>(implicated in caries), harbours three major size variants, designated gp-340 I to III, each specific to an individual saliva. Here we have examined the association of the gp-340 I to III polymorphisms with caries experience and adhesion of <it>S. mutans</it>.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A case-referent study was performed in 12-year-old Swedish children with high (n = 19) or low (n = 19) caries experiences. We measured the gp-340 I to III saliva phenotypes and correlated those with multiple outcome measures for caries experience and saliva adhesion of <it>S. mutans </it>using the partial least squares (PLS) multivariate projection technique. In addition, we used traditional statistics and 2-year caries increment to verify the established PLS associations, and bacterial adhesion to purified gp-340 I to III proteins to support possible mechanisms.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>All except one subject were typed as gp-340 I to III (10, 23 and 4, respectively). The gp-340 I phenotype correlated positively with caries experience (VIP = 1.37) and saliva adhesion of <it>S. mutans </it>Ingbritt (VIP = 1.47). The gp-340 II and III phenotypes tended to behave in the opposite way. Moreover, the gp-340 I phenotype tended to show an increased 2-year caries increment compared to phenotypes II/III. Purified gp-340 I protein mediated markedly higher adhesion of <it>S. mutans </it>strains Ingbritt and NG8 and <it>Lactococcus lactis </it>expressing AgI/II adhesins (SpaP or PAc) compared to gp-340 II and III proteins. In addition, the gp-340 I protein appeared over represented in subjects positive for Db, an allelic acidic PRP variant associated with caries, and subjects positive for both gp-340 I and Db tended to experience more caries than those negative for both proteins.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Gp-340 I behaves as a caries susceptibility protein.</p

    Risk Factors for Hepatitis C Infection Among Sexually Transmitted Disease-Infected, Inner City Obstetric Patients

    Objective: To test the hypothesis that our inner city obstetric patients who have been infected with sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) will have a higher prevalence of hepatitis C virus infection than the general population and to identify specific risk factors and high-risk groups. Methods: All patients in our prenatal clinic (July 1997–April 1999) who tested positive for one or more STDs were asked to return for hepatitis C antibody testing. Medical charts of all patients who returned for hepatitis C testing were reviewed. Results: A total of 106 patients with STDs were tested for hepatitis C. Positive screening tests for anti-hepatitis C antibody were found in 6.6% (7/106) of the patients (95% CI = 2.7–13.1%). This frequency is significantly higher than the hepatitis C prevalence (1.8%) in the general United States population (p = 0.006). Multiple logistic regression analysis confirmed only older age (p = 0.016) and positive HIV status (p = 0.023) to be significant predictors of hepatitis C infection. Conclusions: Inner city STD-infected obstetric patients are at high risk for hepatitis C infection compared with the general population. Increasing age and HIV-positive status are risk factors which are significantly associated with hepatitis C infection

    The clustering of health behaviours in Ireland and their relationship with mental health, self-rated health and quality of life

    Health behaviours do not occur in isolation. Rather they cluster together. It is important to examine patterns of health behaviours to inform a more holistic approach to health in both health promotion and illness prevention strategies. Examination of patterns is also important because of the increased risk of mortality, morbidity and synergistic effects of health behaviours. This study examines the clustering of health behaviours in a nationally representative sample of Irish adults and explores the association of these clusters with mental health, self-rated health and quality of life
