Creation of 3D Digital Anthropomorphic Phantoms which Model Actual Patient Non-rigid Body Motion as Determined from MRI and Position Tracking Studies of Volunteers
Background: Patient motion during emission imaging can create artifacts in the reconstructed emission distributions, which may mislead the diagnosis. For example, in myocardial-perfusion imaging, these artifacts can be mistaken for defects. Various software and hardware approaches have been developed to detect and compensate for motion. There are various ways of testing the effectiveness of motion correction methods applied in emission tomography, including the use of realistic digital anthropomorphic phantoms.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to create 3D digital anthropomorphic phantoms based on MRI data of volunteers undergoing a series of clinically relevant motions. These phantoms with combined position tracking were used to investigate both imaging-data-driven and motion tracking strategies to estimate and correct for patient motion.
Methods: MRI scans were obtained of volunteers undergoing a series of clinically relevant movements. During the MRI, the motions were recorded by near-infra-red cameras tracking using external markers on the chest and abdomen. Individual-specific extended cardiac-torso (XCAT) phantoms were created fit to our volunteer MRI imaging data representing pre- and post-motion states. These XCAT phantoms were then used to generate activity and attenuation distributions. Monte Carlo methods will then be performed to simulate SPECT acquisitions, which will be used to evaluate various motion estimation and correction strategies.
Results: Three volunteers were scanned in the MRI with concurrent external motion tracking. Each volunteer performed five separate motions including an axial slide, roll, shoulder twist, spine bend, and arm motion. These MRI scans were then manually digitalized into 3D anthropomorphic XCAT phantoms. Activity and attenuation distributions were created for each XCAT phantom, representing fifteen individual-specific motions.
Conclusions: Our results will be combined with the external motion tracking data to determine if external motion tracking accurately reflects heart position in patients undergoing cardiac SPECT imaging. This data will also be used to evaluate other motion correction methods in the future

The Sloan Digital Sky Survey: The Cosmic Spectrum and Star-Formation History
We present a determination of the `Cosmic Optical Spectrum' of the Universe,
i.e. the ensemble emission from galaxies, as determined from the red-selected
Sloan Digital Sky Survey main galaxy sample and compare with previous results
of the blue-selected 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey. Broadly we find good agreement
in both the spectrum and the derived star-formation histories. If we use a
power-law star-formation history model where star-formation rate out to z=1, then we find that of 2 to 3 is still the most
likely model and there is no evidence for current surveys missing large amounts
of star formation at high redshift. In particular `Fossil Cosmology' of the
local universe gives measures of star-formation history which are consistent
with direct observations at high redshift. Using the photometry of SDSS we are
able to derive the cosmic spectrum in absolute units (i.e.^{-1}^{-3}\Msun/\Lsun\omstars h = 0.0025\alpha\Msun^{-1}^{-3}$ today.Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, ApJ in press (April 10th 2003
Photometric redshifts from reconstructed QSO templates
From SDSS commissioning photometric and spectroscopic data, we investigate
the utility of photometric redshift techniques to the task of estimating QSO
redshifts. We consider empirical methods (e.g. nearest-neighbor searches and
polynomial fitting), standard spectral template fitting and hybrid approaches
(i.e. training spectral templates from spectroscopic and photometric
observations of QSOs). We find that in all cases, due to the presence of strong
emission-lines within the QSO spectra, the nearest-neighbor and template
fitting methods are superior to the polynomial fitting approach. Applying a
novel reconstruction technique, we can, from the SDSS multicolor photometry,
reconstruct a statistical representation of the underlying SEDs of the SDSS
QSOs. Although, the reconstructed templates are based on only broadband
photometry the common emission lines present within the QSO spectra can be
recovered in the resulting spectral energy distributions. The technique should
be useful in searching for spectral differences among QSOs at a given redshift,
in searching for spectral evolution of QSOs, in comparing photometric redshifts
for objects beyond the SDSS spectroscopic sample with those in the well
calibrated photometric redshifts for objects brighter than 20th magnitude and
in searching for systematic and time variable effects in the SDSS broad band

eHealth Literacy and Web 2.0 Health Information Seeking Behaviors Among Baby Boomers and Older Adults
Background: Baby boomers and older adults, a subset of the population at high risk for chronic disease, social isolation, and poor health outcomes, are increasingly utilizing the Internet and social media (Web 2.0) to locate and evaluate health information. However, among these older populations, little is known about what factors influence their eHealth literacy and use of Web 2.0 for health information.
Objective: The intent of the study was to explore the extent to which sociodemographic, social determinants, and electronic device use influences eHealth literacy and use of Web 2.0 for health information among baby boomers and older adults.
Methods: A random sample of baby boomers and older adults (n=283, mean 67.46 years, SD 9.98) participated in a cross-sectional, telephone survey that included the eHealth literacy scale (eHEALS) and items from the Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS) assessing electronic device use and use of Web 2.0 for health information. An independent samples t test compared eHealth literacy among users and non-users of Web 2.0 for health information. Multiple linear and logistic regression analyses were conducted to determine associations between sociodemographic, social determinants, and electronic device use on self-reported eHealth literacy and use of Web 2.0 for seeking and sharing health information.
Results: Almost 90% of older Web 2.0 users (90/101, 89.1%) reported using popular Web 2.0 websites, such as Facebook and Twitter, to find and share health information. Respondents reporting use of Web 2.0 reported greater eHealth literacy (mean 30.38, SD 5.45, n=101) than those who did not use Web 2.0 (mean 28.31, SD 5.79, n=182), t217.60=−2.98, P=.003. Younger age (b=−0.10), more education (b=0.48), and use of more electronic devices (b=1.26) were significantly associated with greater eHealth literacy (R2 =.17, R2adj =.14, F9,229=5.277, P<.001). Women were nearly three times more likely than men to use Web 2.0 for health information (OR 2.63, Wald= 8.09, df=1, P=.004). Finally, more education predicted greater use of Web 2.0 for health information, with college graduates (OR 2.57, Wald= 3.86, df =1, P=.049) and post graduates (OR 7.105, Wald= 4.278, df=1, P=.04) nearly 2 to 7 times more likely than non-high school graduates to use Web 2.0 for health information.
Conclusions: Being younger and possessing more education was associated with greater eHealth literacy among baby boomers and older adults. Females and those highly educated, particularly at the post graduate level, reported greater use of Web 2.0 for health information. More in-depth surveys and interviews among more diverse groups of baby boomers and older adult populations will likely yield a better understanding regarding how current Web-based health information seeking and sharing behaviors influence health-related decision making
Mechanism of action of probiotics
The modern diet doesn't provide the required amount of beneficial bacteria. Maintenance of a proper microbial ecology in the host is the main criteria to be met for a healthy growth. Probiotics are one such alternative that are supplemented to the host where by and large species of Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium and Saccharomyces are considered as main probiotics. The field of probiotics has made stupendous strides though there is no major break through in the identification of their mechanism of action. They exert their activity primarily by strengthening the intestinal barrier and immunomodulation. The main objective of the study was to provide a deep insight into the effect of probiotics against the diseases, their applications and proposed mechanism of action
Evidence for Reionization at z ~ 6: Detection of a Gunn-Peterson Trough in a z=6.28 Quasar
We present moderate resolution Keck spectroscopy of quasars at z=5.82, 5.99
and 6.28, discovered by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We find that the
Ly Alpha absorption in the spectra of these quasars evolves strongly with
redshift. To z~5.7, the Ly Alpha absorption evolves as expected from an
extrapolation from lower redshifts. However, in the highest redshift object,
SDSSp J103027.10+052455.0 (z=6.28), the average transmitted flux is
0.0038+-0.0026 times that of the continuum level over 8450 A < lambda < 8710 A
(5.95<z(abs)<6.16), consistent with zero flux. Thus the flux level drops by a
factor of >150, and is consistent with zero flux in the Ly Alpha forest region
immediately blueward of the Ly Alpha emission line, compared with a drop by a
factor of ~10 at z(abs)~5.3. A similar break is seen at Ly Beta; because of the
decreased oscillator strength of this transition, this allows us to put a
considerably stronger limit, tau(eff) > 20, on the optical depth to Ly Alpha
absorption at z=6.
This is a clear detection of a complete Gunn-Peterson trough, caused by
neutral hydrogen in the intergalactic medium. Even a small neutral hydrogen
fraction in the intergalactic medium would result in an undetectable flux in
the Ly Alpha forest region. Therefore, the existence of the Gunn-Peterson
trough by itself does not indicate that the quasar is observed prior to the
reionization epoch. However, the fast evolution of the mean absorption in these
high-redshift quasars suggests that the mean ionizing background along the line
of sight to this quasar has declined significantly from z~5 to 6, and the

Prior exercise and antioxidant supplementation: effect on oxidative stress and muscle injury
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Both acute bouts of prior exercise (preconditioning) and antioxidant nutrients have been used in an attempt to attenuate muscle injury or oxidative stress in response to resistance exercise. However, most studies have focused on untrained participants rather than on athletes. The purpose of this work was to determine the independent and combined effects of antioxidant supplementation (vitamin C + mixed tocopherols/tocotrienols) and prior eccentric exercise in attenuating markers of skeletal muscle injury and oxidative stress in resistance trained men.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Thirty-six men were randomly assigned to: no prior exercise + placebo; no prior exercise + antioxidant; prior exercise + placebo; prior exercise + antioxidant. Markers of muscle/cell injury (muscle performance, muscle soreness, C-reactive protein, and creatine kinase activity), as well as oxidative stress (blood protein carbonyls and peroxides), were measured before and through 48 hours of exercise recovery.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>No group by time interactions were noted for any variable (P > 0.05). Time main effects were noted for creatine kinase activity, muscle soreness, maximal isometric force and peak velocity (P < 0.0001). Protein carbonyls and peroxides were relatively unaffected by exercise.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>There appears to be no independent or combined effect of a prior bout of eccentric exercise or antioxidant supplementation as used here on markers of muscle injury in resistance trained men. Moreover, eccentric exercise as used in the present study results in minimal blood oxidative stress in resistance trained men. Hence, antioxidant supplementation for the purpose of minimizing blood oxidative stress in relation to eccentric exercise appears unnecessary in this population.</p
