Video-based Simulations: Considerations for Teaching Students with Developmental Disabilities

The use of video-based multimedia simulations for teaching functional skills to persons with developmental disabilities remains an unexplored application of technology for this group. This article examines the historical literature in this area, and discusses future considerations, design issues, and implications of using multimedia simulations. Implementation issues are presented, and suggestions regarding design, development, and application of multimedia simulations are offered. Training reading and phoneme awareness skills in children with Down syndrome

The authors report a short-term reading intervention study involving 15 children with Down syndrome (DS) who attended mainstream schools. The intervention programme taught children phoneme segmentation and blending skills in the context of learning letter-sounds and working with words in books. The children were taught by their learning support assistants, who received special training for this purpose. Compared to a waiting group, a group of eight children with DS improved significantly on measures of early literacy skills (letter-sound knowledge, Early Word Recognition) following eight weeks of intervention. The waiting group started to make progress once they received the intervention. Both groups maintained progress on the literacy measures five months after the intervention had finished. The results suggest that children with DS can benefit from structured, phonics-based reading intervention

Lung abscess

A lung abscess is a thick-walled cavity that contains purulent material [1-2]. It is a rare condition in children. It arises as a complication of a poorly controlled pneumonia, and has an estimated incidence of 0.7 per 100,000 hospital admissions/year. A lung abscess can be defined to be \u201cprimary\u201d if it occurs in a previously healthy child or \u201csecondary\u201d if underlying conditions predispose to the onset of the abscess [1-8].
