    PROMOTING ACTIVE LEARNING IN DISTANCE EDUCATION: A CASE OF STUDENT-CENTERED GUEST LECTURING

    In the distance education environment, one pedagogical challenge involves increasing student engagement and active involvement in the learning process. Built on the theory of constructivism and a platform of guest lecturing, the authors introduce a method that could put students in the driver’s seat of active learning. Traditionally, guest lecturing is centered on the speaker. Our approach focuses on students, and as a result allows them to participate in each step of guest lecturing, such as preparation, interviewing, and reflection. The research methodology and plan are presented and the effectiveness of the proposed approach will be empirically tested

    Anselm, the Holy Trinity, and the Relative Identity Thesis

    Anselm’s On the Incarnation of the Word is presented as a letter to Pope Urban II for the purpose of exposing and correcting the theological errors of Roscelin of Compiègne, who maintained that since only the Son became incarnate, we must conclude that the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are numerically distinct substances. In this paper I argue that Anselm’s rejection of this conclusion involves an account of the Holy Trinity which includes a strongly relativized conception of identity, that is, one which allows an object x and an object y to be the same F, but different Gs. I further contend that Anselm buttresses this account with two non-theological examples of relative identity. Although it may well be the case that advocates of Latin Trinitarianism are generally committed to such an account, since they affirm that the Father is the same substance as the Son but not the same person as the Son, I take Anselm’s defense of this position to be theologically significant, first, because it may well be the first explicit defense of Relative Trinitarianism, and second, because Anselm’s position as a bishop and a Doctor of the Church is (for Catholics, at least) an indication of its theological soundness

    A Statistical Growth Property of Plant Root Architectures.

    Numerous types of biological branching networks, with varying shapes and sizes, are used to acquire and distribute resources. Here, we show that plant root and shoot architectures share a fundamental design property. We studied the spatial density function of plant architectures, which specifies the probability of finding a branch at each location in the 3-dimensional volume occupied by the plant. We analyzed 1645 root architectures from four species and discovered that the spatial density functions of all architectures are population-similar. This means that despite their apparent visual diversity, all of the roots studied share the same basic shape, aside from stretching and compression along orthogonal directions. Moreover, the spatial density of all architectures can be described as variations on a single underlying function: a Gaussian density truncated at a boundary of roughly three standard deviations. Thus, the root density of any architecture requires only four parameters to specify: the total mass of the architecture and the standard deviations of the Gaussian in the three (x, y, z) growth directions. Plant shoot architectures also follow this design form, suggesting that two basic plant transport systems may use similar growth strategies

    Evaluating a Prioritization Framework for Monitoring Chemicals of Emerging Concern in the Salish Sea Based on Lessons Learned from Western States Programs

    We are now approaching a tipping point where priority pollutants may no longer be the primary driver of environmental impairment. Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs) present a challenge to environmental monitoring and management programs because the rapidly emerging state of the knowledge requires an adaptive and transparent prioritization framework. The state of the science, treatment technologies, and regulatory policies are not well understood, CEC quantification is challenging and expensive, and the management approach is not simply a concentration based criteria, but may include biological end-points. The need for a shared responsibility and leveraging across many programs was evaluated through a series of webinars with other programs studying CECs including Columbia River Toxics Program, Washington Department of Ecology, Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, Southern California Coastal Waters Research Project, and San Francisco Bay Regional Monitoring Program. The lessons learned were articulated into a 10-step prioritization framework. The critical lesson learned included: 1) Develop clear objectives, definitions of CECs, and target audience; 2) Identify conceptual models to provide a clear target for the appropriate media to monitor for various chemicals and at what frequency; 3) Define the chemical characteristics in terms of usage, persistence, bioaccumulation, and toxicity; 4) Develop a target CEC analyte list; 5) Screen and rank the CEC analyte list based on chemical characteristics, environmental concentrations, and state of the science; 6) Create a transparent prioritization process to include input from key stakeholders and end users that builds consensus during development; 7) Prioritize the chemical categories by using specific metrics such as available data, status of analytical methods, available thresholds, costs, programmatic concerns and opportunities for leveraging with other programs; 8) Identify potential biological end-points and other indicators; 9) Create a formal review process to support data and knowledge sharing, adaptively manage prioritization to include new science and critical research gaps; and 10) Develop a working group to facilitate leveraging of funds across many programs

    Interrogation of IDH1 Status in Gliomas by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy

    Mutations in the isocitrate dehydrogenase 1 (IDH1) gene are found in a high proportion of diffuse gliomas. The presence of the IDH1 mutation is a valuable diagnostic, prognostic and predictive biomarker for the management of patients with glial tumours. Techniques involving vibrational spectroscopy, e.g., Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, have previously demonstrated analytical capabilities for cancer detection, and have the potential to contribute to diagnostics. The implementation of FTIR microspectroscopy during surgical biopsy could present a fast, label-free method for molecular genetic classification. For example, the rapid determination of IDH1 status in a patient with a glioma diagnosis could inform intra-operative decision-making between alternative surgical strategies. In this study, we utilized synchrotron-based FTIR microanalysis to probe tissue microarray sections from 79 glioma patients, and distinguished the positive class (IDH1-mutated) from the IDH1-wildtype glioma, with a sensitivity and specificity of 82.4% and 83.4%, respectively. We also examined the ability of attenuated total reflection (ATR)-FTIR spectroscopy in detecting the biomolecular events and global epigenetic and metabolic changes associated with mutations in the IDH1 enzyme, in blood serum samples collected from an additional 72 brain tumour patients. Centrifugal filtration enhanced the diagnostic ability of the classification models, with balanced accuracies up to ~69%. Identification of the molecular status from blood serum prior to biopsy could further direct some patients to alternative treatment strategies
