In a volume of Koers largely dedicated to emeritus Archbishop Desmond Tutu, the following extract from the commendatio deserves special attention: He never failed to emphasise that forgiveness and reconciliation can never be cheap, but can only be achieved through equal justice for all citizens. This was the reason why he fought with his whole being and all the means at his disposal against the unjust, inhuman and unbiblical ideology of apartheid. He did so long before this university distanced itself from apartheid, first through some lonely voices in the seventies and finally in 1996. The Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education has the greatest respect, appreciation and admiration for the way in which this fellow-Christian consistently, openly, boldly and unashamedly lived out basic Christian principles like justice, truth, reconciliation and peace
The comic vision in contemporary British drama*
There has long been controversy as to the necessity and validity of generic distinctions in literature, especially dramatic literature. Some of the earliest critical comment on literature was concerned with generic distinction and as Aristotle’s ideas (the earliest extant critical comment on literary genre) were firmly based on a study of plays performed at the time it would seem that he recognized that a generic type represented a particular attitude and vision of life on the part of the author
Sociocultural and political values in selected plays by South African playwrights
The paper deals with the issue of values expressed in South African plays, and takes a look at representative plays from the entire spectrum of South African drama - Afrikaans, English, Black drama and alternative Theatre. Following a survey of the field, discussions are provided of selected plays in all the sections. It emerges that there is a fair amount of homogeneity right across the board in terms of sociocultural and political values. There is also a strong insistence on value linked to Black consciousness in the plays by Black playwrights, which is important in view of the fact that the Black playwrights often have an overtly didactic and propagandists intention
Uit die oogpunt van die buitestander: die rol van identiteit en ruimte in die skep van 'n gemeenskapseie jeugnovelle
The reading habits (or lack thereof) of adolescents in South Africa, like those in the rest of the world, are reason for concern. The fact that adolescents read distressingly little can be attributed to different reasons. It may be because of a lack of skill and interest,
or because there is a dearth of texts with which they can identify. If more texts were created in which adolescents can identify with the spaces and identities portrayed, the reading statistics in South Africa may shift positively. However, at present not all communities and voices in the country are represented by a diversity of writers, especially writers of youth literature. In the Afrikaans speaking coloured community of Promosa, Potchefstroom, the same tendency is found. Although it is ideal that these communities should be represented by their own writers, who know them best, this is not always the case. Is it therefore possible for an outsider to create a youth novel for a specific target group with which they (the adolescents of Promosa) will identify? Keywords: identity, space, community, youth novella. Tydskrif vir Letterkunde Vol. 45 (2) 2008: pp. 32-4
Tragedy and the sovereignty of God: Christian literary criticism and the concept of tragedy
A Christian approach to literature is easily confused with a theological approach. There are many dangers implicit in such an approach. Sallie McFague TeSelle says the following about theologians who presume to violate the bounds of both theology and literature by attempting literary criticism: “There is no reason to suppose that those trained in theology, or philosophy for that matter, are likely to possess, what is essential to the practice of literary criticism, that ‘sensitiveness of the intelligence’ described by Matthew Arnold as equivalent to conscience in moral matters. A theological training seems to have a disabling effect and has subsequently to be struggled against when literary criticism is the concern.” (TeSelle 1966:4)
High prevalence of hookah smoking among secondary school students in a disadvantaged community in Johannesburg
Smoking of hookahs (also known as water-pipes) represents an emerging trend in tobacco use. Hookah smokers are at risk for the same diseases caused by cigarette smoking – cancer, respiratory and heart diseases, and pregnancy-related complications. Globally, the highest rates occur in the North African and East Mediterranean regions and among young people in the USA and European countries. There has been little research on hookah smoking in southern Africa
Genotypic diversity in Babesia bovis field isolates and vaccine strains from South Africa
Genotypic diversity in Babesia bovis (cause of Asiatic redwater in cattle) vaccine strains and field isolates from South Africa were investigated using the Bv80 gene as well as microsatellites. The S11 vaccine strain possessed both A and B alleles of the Bv80 gene, as well as genotypic diversity within each allele type as defined by repeat variation resulting in different amplicon sizes. Rapid serial passage of vaccine strain from passage S10 to S24 resulted in loss of genotypic diversity that yielded a single allele A genotype with an amplicon size of 558 bp. This suggested that clonal selection occurred during rapid passaging. Extensive genotypic diversity exists in 44 field isolates characterized with both Bv80 A and B alleles, but can be readily distinguished from the S24 vaccine strain using either the Bv80 allele specific PCR assays or using multi-locus micro-satellite typing. This indicated that no recent documented clinical cases of Asiatic redwater were caused by the reversion to virulence of the current vaccine strain.Red Meat Research andDevelopment South Africa (Project: OV14/06/C226).http://www.elsevier.com/locate/vetparhb2016Veterinary Tropical Disease
