    Depression, School Performance, and the Veridicality of Perceived Grades and Causal Attributions

    An external criterion was assessed to test whether depressives have distorted perceptions of covariation information and whether their attributions are consistent with this information. Studentsā€™ actual and self-perceived grades, depression status, and attributions for failures were assessed. Furthermore, partici pants estimated average grades. Generally, self-perceived own past grades were inflated. Depressed students and those with low grades distorted their own grades (but not the average grade) more to their favor than individuals low in depression and those with high grades. Depression went along with lower actual grades and with internal, stable, and global failure attributions. Mood differences in attributions were not due to differences in previous grades. Depressed individuals drew (unrealistically) more depressogenic causal inferences when they perceived average grades to be low than when average grades were perceived to be high. However, they (realistically) attributed failure more in a depressogenic fashion than did nondepressives when their own grade history was low

    Transient x-ray diffraction used to diagnose shock compressed Si crystals on the Nova laser

    Transient x-ray diffraction is used to record time-resolved information about the shock compression of materials. This technique has been applied on Nova shock experiments driven using a hohlraum x-ray drive. Data were recorded from the shock release at the free surface of a Si crystal, as well as from Si at an embedded ablator/Si interface. Modeling has been done to simulate the diffraction data incorporating the strained crystal rocking curves and Bragg diffraction efficiencies. Examples of the data and post-processed simulations are presented

    An analog retina model for detecting dim moving objects against a bright moving background

    We are interested in applications that require the ability to track a dim target against a bright, moving background. Since the target signal will be less than or comparable to the variations in the background signal intensity, sophisticated techniques must be employed to detect the target. We present an analog retina model that adapts to the motion of the background in order to enhance targets that have a velocity difference with respect to the background. Computer simulation results and our preliminary concept of an analog 'Z' focal plane implementation are also presented

    Abstract Instructors who design online courses have an opportunity to develop assessments to monitor students' progress toward achievement of learning objectives. When combined with well-designed learning objectives, assessment techniques can close the feedback loop and provide excellent artifacts not only for course evaluation but programmatic and campus wide assessment. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the essential elements for the design and use of formative and summative online assessments including discussion postings, assignments, SCORM modules, and proctored and non-proctored tests or quizzes. Issues associated with online test security and "cheating" will also be discussed. The paper is designed to provide an overview about design and use of assessment strategies for instructors who are novices to online learning

    Influence of Nanoparticle Size and Shape on Oligomer Formation of an Amyloidogenic Peptide

    Understanding the influence of macromolecular crowding and nanoparticles on the formation of in-register Ī²\beta-sheets, the primary structural component of amyloid fibrils, is a first step towards describing \emph{in vivo} protein aggregation and interactions between synthetic materials and proteins. Using all atom molecular simulations in implicit solvent we illustrate the effects of nanoparticle size, shape, and volume fraction on oligomer formation of an amyloidogenic peptide from the transthyretin protein. Surprisingly, we find that inert spherical crowding particles destabilize in-register Ī²\beta-sheets formed by dimers while stabilizing Ī²\beta-sheets comprised of trimers and tetramers. As the radius of the nanoparticle increases crowding effects decrease, implying smaller crowding particles have the largest influence on the earliest amyloid species. We explain these results using a theory based on the depletion effect. Finally, we show that spherocylindrical crowders destabilize the ordered Ī²\beta-sheet dimer to a greater extent than spherical crowders, which underscores the influence of nanoparticle shape on protein aggregation

    Association of opioid prescribing practices with chronic pain and benzodiazepine co-prescription:a primary care data linkage study

    Background: Opioid prescribing is increasing worldwide with associated increases in misuse and other harms. We studied variations in national opioid prescription rates, indicators of prescribing quality, co-prescribing of benzodiazepines and relationship with pain severity in Scotland. Methods: Electronic linkages of opioid prescribing in Scotland were determined from: (i) national data from Information Services Division, NHS Scotland (2003ā€“2012); and (ii) individual data from Generation Scotland: Scottish Family Health Study. Descriptive analyses were conducted on national data, multilevel modelling to examine factors associated with variations in prescribing rates. Ļ‡2 tests examined associations between individual pain severity and opioid prescriptions. Results: The number of strong opioid prescriptions more than doubled from 474 385 in 2003 to 1 036 446 in 2012, and weak opioid prescribing increased from 3 261 547 to 4 852 583. In Scotland, 938 674 individuals were prescribed an opioid in 2012 (18% of the population). Patients in the most deprived areas were 3.5 times more likely to receive a strong opioid than patients in the least deprived. There was significant variation in prescribing rates between geographical areas, with much of this explained by deprivation. Of women aged 25ā€“40 yr prescribed a strong opioid, 40% were also prescribed a benzodiazepine. There was significant association between pain severity and receipt of opioid prescription. Over 50% of people reporting severe pain were not prescribed an opioid analgesic. Conclusions: We found opioid prescribing in primary care to be common and increasing in Scotland, particularly for severe pain. Co-prescribing of opioids and benzodiazepines was common

    Photothermal heterodyne detection is used to record the first room-temperature absorption spectra of single CdSe/ZnS semiconductor nanocrystals. These spectra are recorded in the high cw excitation regime, and the observed bands are assigned to transitions involving biexciton and trion states. Comparison with the single nanocrystals photoluminescence spectra leads to the measurement of spectral Stokes shifts free from ensemble averaging

    Task shifting and integration of HIV care into primary care in South Africa: The development and content of the streamlining tasks and roles to expand treatment and care for HIV (STRETCH) intervention

    Background: Task shifting and the integration of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) care into primary care services have been identified as possible strategies for improving access to antiretroviral treatment (ART). This paper describes the development and content of an intervention involving these two strategies, as part of the Streamlining Tasks and Roles to Expand Treatment and Care for HIV (STRETCH) pragmatic randomised controlled trial. Methods: Developing the intervention: The intervention was developed following discussions with senior management, clinicians, and clinic staff. These discussions revealed that the establishment of separate antiretroviral treatment services for HIV had resulted in problems in accessing care due to the large number of patients at ART clinics. The intervention developed therefore combined the shifting from doctors to nurses of prescriptions of antiretrovirals (ARVs) for uncomplicated patients and the stepwise integration of HIV care into primary care services. Results: Components of the intervention: The intervention consisted of regulatory changes, training, and guidelines to support nurse ART prescription, local management teams, an implementation toolkit, and a flexible, phased introduction. Nurse supervisors were equipped to train intervention clinic nurses in ART prescription using outreach education and an integrated primary care guideline. Management teams were set up and a STRETCH coordinator was appointed to oversee the implementation process. Discussion: Three important processes were used in developing and implementing this intervention: active participation of clinic staff and local and provincial management, educational outreach to train nurses in intervention sites, and an external facilitator to support all stages of the intervention rollout
