Investigating the paths of ethics 'ethics of politics, ethics of philosophy', contemporary thought has been inquiring for a long into several tasks and aims, concerning the same practice of philosophy. Very lucidly, Emmanuel Levinas started from the criticism on philosophy as power ideology. In the background of the being qua totality, a plurality of existents competes among themselves to impose one's right to be. Philosophy is the awareness of the fact that the unwinding of being is determined by conflict, which is its impulse. Nevertheless, as a critical practice, philosophy consists in the capacity for unmasking the terrible evidence of the all-determining conflict. Philosophy is the defence tool enabling us not to be victims of illusion. Just because of that, contemporary ethics invites us to reconsider, with ever greater critical care, the connection me-you. After a careful analysis of the considerations on this subject by some thinkers in our time 'from Heidegger to Sartre, from Jaspers to Levinas, from Guardini to Piovani and Fornet Betancourt' this essay detect the possibility of a way out from the aporias, inevitably involving the connection to otherness 'with the resulting impossibility to usurp the exteriority of one another, who is kept safe by an insurmountable transcendency' in a new idea of Hybridisation (Mestizaje). It has not to do with ethnic or racial Hybridisation; the Hybridisation we refer to is anything but the idea about the existence of a social, cultural, linguistic, ethnic starting condition, neither of an homogeneous set generating a heterogeneous phenomenon by the meeting with another set. Instead, it could be considered as a 'virtue', that is, «sharing an existence without essence», a condition that allow us for escaping from the twofold trap of bringing the other into the boundaries of the supremacy of the same, or of falling into mere crossbreeding form

Raising Household Leverage: Evidence from Co-Financed Mortgages

This article studies the impact on mortgage origination conditions and performance of a product that aims at raising household leverage: bank mortgages co-financed with a housing provident fund (HPF), a compulsory saving scheme for all private sector workers in Mexico. Relative to traditional bank mortgages, our estimates show that down payment of the co-financed declines substantially, by 7.6 percentage points, whereas purchased properties are not more expensive. Despite their higher leverage, co-financed bank mortgages do not exhibit higher default rates---their lower liquidity needs to cover upfront costs and monthly payments reduce credit risk. We also find distributional effects: The scheme alleviates borrowing constraints more at lower incomes, especially when banks are smaller. Larger banks, with a greater share of low-income borrowers, use co-financing to reduce the amount lent to those segments. Thus, when the HPF's lending conditions become relatively less generous at lower incomes, we find that larger banks neutralize the substitution between traditional and co-financed mortgages that is found on smaller banks' portfolios

Attachment anxiety and depressive symptoms in undergraduate medical students

Introduction Several studies report that medical students are at high risk of depression. Despite the variability in students’ vulnerability to depression, the role of individual differences in depression risk among medical students has hardly been investigated. Studies outside of medical student populations have shown that individual differences in attachment style and emotion regulation participate in vulnerability to depression. Objectives This study investigates to what extent medical students’ depressive symptoms are related to differences in students’ insecure attachment styles and their perception of reduced access to emotion regulation strategies. Methods In a cross-sectional quantitative study, undergraduate medical students at the beginning of their second academic year completed online questionnaires measuring their attachment style, difficulties in emotion regulation, and depressive symptoms. Results Out of the 390 medical students invited, 267 participated in the survey. Higher secure attachment was associated with fewer depressive symptoms. Medical students’ insecure attachment style and emotion dysregulation were significantly related to depressive symptoms. Difficulties in employing strategies to disengage from one’s own negative affect partly mediated the effects of two dimensions of insecure anxious attachment—need for approval and preoccupation with relationships—on depressive symptoms. Discussion Anxious attachment style and limited access to emotion regulation strategies participate in medical students’ depressive symptoms. These findings highlight the need for acknowledging medical students’ attachment style and students’ perceived access to emotion regulation strategies for the early identification of and intervention programs for the risk of depression

    Trading away incentives

Equity pay has been the primary component of managerial compensation packages at US public firms since the early 1990s. Using a comprehensive sample of top executives from 1992-2020, we estimate to what extent they trade firm equity held in their portfolios to neutralize increments in ownership due to annual equity pay. Executives accommodate ownership increases linked to options awards. Conversely, increases in stock holdings linked to option exercises and restricted stock grants are largely neutralized through comparable sales of unrestricted shares. Variation in stock trading responses across executives hardly appears to respond to diversification motives. From a theoretical standpoint, these results challenge (i) the common, generally implicit assumption that managers cannot undo their incentive packages, (ii) the standard modeling practice of treating different equity pay items homogeneously, and (iii) the often taken for granted crucial role of diversification motives in managers' portfolio choices

    Housing Yields

This paper investigates heterogeneity in residential property yields using rental and sale listings from a major German online real estate platform between 2007 and 2017. Equipped with property-level rent-to-price ratios obtained by matching properties for sale and for rent, we show that these yields strongly co-move with regional factors, such as population age structure, industry structure, housing supply rigidities, and the liquidity and size of the housing market. Differences are particularly pronounced between globally relevant cities and other areas. Despite the importance of regional factors, the degree of unexplained heterogeneity in yields is puzzlingly high relative to equity yields, whose variation can be largely understood through a few systematic factors. Specifically, a substantial fraction of housing yields heterogeneity is explained neither by local factors nor by an extensive array of property-specific observable features, possibly pointing to the crucial role of idiosyncratic factors, within-city aggregation effects, as well as of informational and regulatory frictions

At the same time that he concluded his prominent monograph about Giambattista Vico (1911), Benedetto Croce confronted in a brief essay a Viquian topic, almost unknown until then, which is the doctrine of laugh. We address here this Viquian theory of laugh, a text in which Vico produces a series of reflections that are both the background and focus of the Crocian essay
