Visigothic Monastic History: Old Paths and New Directions
Fa mig segle, les úniques evidències de la vida i les pràctiques monàstiques del regne visigòtic procedien de fonts literàries, encara que de mèrit molt desigual, tant pel valor dels seus continguts i la seva interpretació, com per la qualitat de les seves edicions. Durant les últimes dècades, aquesta darrera qüestió ha millorat, tot i que la manca d'una edició crítica adequada de la majoria de les regles monàstiques de l'època continua sent un punt feble. Després d'un inici lleugerament vacil·lant, causat per desacords sobre la cronologia, l'arqueologia ha començat a tenir un paper central a l'hora de descobrir i entendre els testimonis del monaquisme visigòtic. Les comparacions amb descobertes fetes en d’altres contextos geogràfics, que van des d'Egipte fins a les illes Hèbrides, poden millorar la comprensió de la seva escala i importància a la península Ibèrica en els segles postromans. Encara que queda molta feina per fer, però podem aventurar-nos a dir que el monaquisme hispànic era molt més extens i de caràcter més variat del que s'hauria cregut ara fa cinquanta anys. Per això és important accelerar l'edició i l'estudi de textos per seguir el ritme dels descobriments arqueològics, per entendre millor aquest aspecte important de la història del regne visigot.Half a century ago, the evidence for monastic life and practices in the Visigothic kingdom consisted entirely of literary sources of very unequal merit, both in the value of their contents and its interpretation, and in the quality of the editions of them. Post-event visits as the sources of marketing strategy sustainability: a conceptual model approach
While extant literature has mainly concentrated on contemporaneous event tourism marketing (i.e., on visiting the city during or around the event) and on intentions to revisit after the event's completion, this research investigates the impact of the event on the decisions of potential tourists/visitors who have never visited the host city and want to visit it after the event's completion. Research in this area, especially in those emerging markets where event marketing is developing rapidly, is limited. In order to address the issues raised, a conceptual model is proposed. This model is based on a multivariate research approach, examining the interrelationships between event image, destination image, participants’ perceived satisfaction with the event and intentions to visit, under the context of non-repeat event marketing. Five hypotheses postulating these interrelationships were tested using structural equation modeling. A “non-repeat” event, the National Games, the biggest traditional sports event in China, was chosen to test this model. Selfadministered questionnaires were used to collect data relating to a period of two months after the event's completion. The findings show that the sustainability of event marketing strategy can be achieved through the post-event visit to the host city.

Automation of a Positron-emission Tomography (PET) Radiotracer Synthesis Protocol for Clinical Production.
The development of new positron-emission tomography (PET) tracers is enabling researchers and clinicians to image an increasingly wide array of biological targets and processes. However, the increasing number of different tracers creates challenges for their production at radiopharmacies. While historically it has been practical to dedicate a custom-configured radiosynthesizer and hot cell for the repeated production of each individual tracer, it is becoming necessary to change this workflow. Recent commercial radiosynthesizers based on disposable cassettes/kits for each tracer simplify the production of multiple tracers with one set of equipment by eliminating the need for custom tracer-specific modifications. Furthermore, some of these radiosynthesizers enable the operator to develop and optimize their own synthesis protocols in addition to purchasing commercially-available kits. In this protocol, we describe the general procedure for how the manual synthesis of a new PET tracer can be automated on one of these radiosynthesizers and validated for the production of clinical-grade tracers. As an example, we use the ELIXYS radiosynthesizer, a flexible cassette-based radiochemistry tool that can support both PET tracer development efforts, as well as routine clinical probe manufacturing on the same system, to produce [18F]Clofarabine ([18F]CFA), a PET tracer to measure in vivo deoxycytidine kinase (dCK) enzyme activity. Translating a manual synthesis involves breaking down the synthetic protocol into basic radiochemistry processes that are then translated into intuitive chemistry "unit operations" supported by the synthesizer software. These operations can then rapidly be converted into an automated synthesis program by assembling them using the drag-and-drop interface. After basic testing, the synthesis and purification procedure may require optimization to achieve the desired yield and purity. Once the desired performance is achieved, a validation of the synthesis is carried out to determine its suitability for the production of the radiotracer for clinical use
Characterization of atrazine-induced gonadal malformations in African clawed frogs (Xenopus laevis) and comparisons with effects of an androgen antagonist (cyproterone acetate) and exogenous estrogen (17beta-estradiol): Support for the demasculinization/feminization hypothesis.
Atrazine is a potent endocrine disruptor that both chemically castrates and feminizes male amphibians. It depletes androgens in adult frogs and reduces androgen-dependent growth of the larynx in developing male larvae. It also disrupts normal gonadal development and feminizes the gonads of developing males. Gonadal malformations induced by atrazine include hermaphrodites and males with multiple testes [single sex polygonadism (SSP)], and effects occur at concentrations as low as 0.1 ppb (microg/L). Here, we describe the frequencies at which these malformations occur and compare them with morphologies induced by the estrogen, 17beta-estradiol (E2) , and the antiandrogen cyproterone acetate, as a first step in testing the hypothesis that the effects of atrazine are a combination of demasculinization and feminization. The various forms of hermaphroditism did not occur in controls. Nonpigmented ovaries, which occurred at relatively high frequencies in atrazine-treated larvae, were found in four individuals out of more than 400 controls examined (1%). Further, we show that several types of gonadal malformations (SSP and three forms of hermaphroditism) are produced by E2 exposure during gonadal differentiation, whereas a final morphology (nonpigmented ovaries) appears to be the result of chemical castration (disruption of androgen synthesis and/or activity) by atrazine. These experimental findings suggest that atrazine-induced gonadal malformations result from the depletion of androgens and production of estrogens, perhaps subsequent to the induction of aromatase by atrazine, a mechanism established in fish, amphibians, reptiles, and mammals (rodents and humans)
A recruiting failure turned success
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>This paper describes an attempt that was made to recruit child-bearing women into a nutrition-based research study and the knowledge that was gained when this approach was unsuccessful. The Assessment Before Children Develop Obesity Study was a cross-sectional survey which planned to follow-up women and children who had previously been, or were currently enrolled in the Mathematical Model of Pregnancy Study.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Ethics approval was sought and obtained over an eight month period. After just six weeks it was obvious that our research objectives were not achievable because of an inadequate response rate (10%). This led to a review of the recruiting methodology as well as all written materials provided to potential participants. Advice was sought from those with expertise in the design of large public health campaigns and literature was consulted to refine our recruitment strategy.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In subsequent redevelopment, the Assessment Before Children Develop Obesity Study was merged with the Mathematical Model of Pregnancy Study to become what is now known as the Women and Their Children's Health Study. Consent rates improved from 10% and 35% in the Assessment Before Children Develop Obesity and Mathematical Model of Pregnancy studies respectively, to 61% in the Women and Their Children's Health Study (chi square test, p < 0.001). Successful recruitment for this research continues. The significant improvement in the participation rate is attributed to numerous factors including changes to the study name, recruiting method and information materials.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>By sharing our experience we aim to assist other researcher in avoiding the same pitfalls and offer effective strategies for improving response rates.</p
HOW GOOD ARE SPATIAL GLM\u27S? A SIMULATION STUDY
An area of increasing interest to agricultural and ecological researchers is the analysis of spatially correlated non-normal data. A generalized linear model(GLM) accounting for spatial covariance was presented by Gotway and Stroup (1997). Their method included approximate inference based on asymptotic distributions. A simulation study was conducted to assess the small sample behavior of their proposed estimates and test statistics. This study suggests that the spatial GLM yields unbiased estimates of treatment means and differences for binomial data, that the spatial GLM improves precision, as measured by MSE, and that the approximate F-statistic is acceptable for hypothesis testing
