On the structure of Pythagorean fields

AbstractIn this paper we study in detail the relationship between fans and valuations first uncovered by Bröcker (see [2]). Our techniques are somewhat different, as our valuations are constructed by “brute force” from the properties of the fields involved. This approach has the advantage in that the valuation theory it yields can be directly related to the structure theory for spaces of orderings as developed by Murray Marshall. See [11–14]. Seismic and drilling constraints on velocity structure and reflectivity near IODP Hole U1309D on the central dome of Atlantis Massif, Mid-Atlantic Ridge 30°N

The definitive version was published in Geochemistry Geophysics Geosystems 10 (2009): Q01010, doi:10.1029/2008GC002121.The seismic structure of the upper ∼1 km of the central dome of Atlantis Massif is investigated in the context of lithologies known from seafloor drilling and physical property measurements obtained within the borehole and on core samples. A new analysis of seafloor refraction data and multichannel reflection data acquired in the immediate vicinity of Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Site U1309 was motivated by a discrepancy between initial seismic interpretations, which indicated mantle velocities at shallow depth, and the gabbroic sequence recovered by drilling. A new seismic velocity model is derived that is consistent with the full suite of geological and geophysical data in the central dome area; all of these data show that mafic intrusive rocks dominate the upper portion of the footwall of this oceanic core complex and that laterally extensive zones of ultramafic rocks are not required by the data. The origin of subseafloor reflectivity beneath the central dome was also considered. We find that seafloor scattering complicates the interpretation of multichannel seismic data acquired near Site U1309 but that detectable subsurface impedance contrasts do occur. Downhole variations in alteration may generate reflections observed from the upper kilometer of the central dome.Support for this study was provided by JOI to JAC, DKB, and AH (grants T304B22, T305A22, and T305A1 respectively)

Aligning Paradigms, Standards, and Assessment: A Higher-Education Application for Instruction in Science and Mathematics

Disciplines of science and mathematics are essential for 21st century life and progress of our nation. To strengthen the effectiveness of education in the state of Georgia and to address emerging and enduring issues in 21st century life, the state adopted Georgia Performance Standards. To meet the standards of science and mathematics in Georgia classrooms, programs of teacher preparation and educational leadership in higher education institutions across the state must support and develop pre-service and in-service teachers and leaders able to effectively incorporate standards and assessment consistent with this paradigm shift. Student leadership teams at Columbus State University were instructed in the use of a matrix alignment process as a learner-centered paradigm and effective assessment strategy to promote student achievement in P-12 education

Energizers Classroom-based Physical Activities 3-5 : The way teachers integrate physical activity with academic concepts

Energizers are classroom-based physical activities that were designed to help teachers integrate physical activity with academic concepts. The energizers were developed by a team from the Activity Promotion Laboratory at East Carolina University. Teachers can download these activities free of charge and are encouraged to incorporate these activities into their classroom. Our research, published in the journal Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise (2006, volume 38, number 12), demonstrated that: (a) Energizers are easy to implement; (b) both teachers and students enjoy the Energizers activities; (c) use of Energizers activities improves on-task behavior of students; and (d) use of Energizers increases the amount of physical activity accumulated over the course of the school day.Activity Promotion Laboratory: Projects Fulfilling a Nee

Multilingual and Native English‐speaking Student Writers in Medical Laboratory Sciences (MLS): A Comparative Pilot Study

Medical laboratory scientists are health care practitioners who perform testing on blood and other body fluids providing vital information to physicians for the diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients in health and disease. Miscommunications between laboratory personnel and other health care practitioners can result in unwarranted delays in patient care or errors in treatment selection, which ultimately could cause patient harm, including the possible loss of life. In spite of prerequisite writing course requirements, students in our laboratory science baccalaureate degree program struggled to reach the program’s writing competencies. The situation in our program was complicated by the high percentage of multilingual students with varying abilities in English. This pilot study was initiated to describe the nature of writing in our field of practice and to analyze the current status of student writing abilities. A survey of writing activities among current laboratory science practitioners confirmed the essential nature of writing in our field and the types of writing activities performed on a regular basis. Analysis of current student writing samples showed that both native-English speaking and multilingual student writers made essentially the same types of errors although the multilingual students made significantly more errors in some categories
