Development of a pilot data management infrastructure for biomedical researchers at University of Manchester – approach, findings, challenges and outlook of the MaDAM Project
Management and curation of digital data has been becoming ever more important in a higher education and research environment characterised by large and complex data, demand for more interdisciplinary and collaborative work, extended funder requirements and use of e-infrastructures to facilitate new research methods and paradigms. This paper presents the approach, technical infrastructure, findings, challenges and outlook (including future development within the successor project, MiSS) of the ‘MaDAM: Pilot data management infrastructure for biomedical researchers at University of Manchester’ project funded under the infrastructure strand of the JISC Managing Research Data (JISCMRD) programme. MaDAM developed a pilot research data management solution at the University of Manchester based on biomedical researchers’ requirements, which includes technical and governance components with the flexibility to meet future needs across multiple research groups and disciplines
Baryonic and mesonic 3-point functions with open spin indices
We have implemented a new way of computing three-point correlation functions.
It is based on a factorization of the entire correlation function into two
parts which are evaluated with open spin- (and to some extent flavor-) indices.
This allows us to estimate the two contributions simultaneously for many
different initial and final states and momenta, with little computational
overhead. We explain this factorization as well as its efficient implementation
in a new library which has been written to provide the necessary functionality
on modern parallel architectures and on CPUs, including Intel's Xeon Phi

(In)finite extent of stationary perfect fluids in Newtonian theory
For stationary, barotropic fluids in Newtonian gravity we give simple
criteria on the equation of state and the "law of motion" which guarantee
finite or infinite extent of the fluid region (providing a priori estimates for
the corresponding stationary Newton-Euler system). Under more restrictive
conditions, we can also exclude the presence of "hollow" configurations. Our
main result, which does not assume axial symmetry, uses the virial theorem as
the key ingredient and generalises a known result in the static case. In the
axially symmetric case stronger results are obtained and examples are

Light-cone distribution amplitudes of octet baryons from lattice QCD
We present lattice QCD results for the wave function normalization constants
and the first moments of the distribution amplitudes for the lowest-lying
baryon octet. The analysis is based on a large number of ensembles
comprising multiple trajectories in the quark mass plane including physical
pion (and kaon) masses, large volumes, and, most importantly, five different
lattice spacings down to . This allows us to perform a
controlled extrapolation to the continuum and infinite volume limits by a
simultaneous fit to all available data. We demonstrate that the formerly
observed violation of flavor symmetry breaking constraints can, indeed, be
attributed to discretization effects that vanish in the continuum limit
Population, sexual and reproductive health, rights and sustainable development: forging a common agenda.
This article suggests that sexual and reproductive health and rights activists seeking to influence the post-2015 international development paradigm must work with sustainable development advocates concerned with a range of issues, including climate change, environmental issues, and food and water security, and that a way of building bridges with these communities is to demonstrate how sexual and reproductive health and rights are relevant for these issues. An understanding of population dynamics, including urbanization and migration, as well as population growth, can help to clarify these links. This article therefore suggests that whether or not sexual and reproductive health and rights activists can overcome resistance to discussing "population", become more knowledgeable about other sustainable development issues, and work with others in those fields to advance the global sustainable development agenda are crucial questions for the coming months. The article also contends that it is possible to care about population dynamics (including ageing and problems faced by countries with a high proportion of young people) and care about human rights at the same time. It expresses concern that, if sexual and reproductive health and rights advocates do not participate in the population dynamics discourse, the field will be left free for those for whom respecting and protecting rights may be less of a priority
Analysis of Elliptically Polarized Maximally Entangled States for Bell Inequality Tests
When elliptically polarized maximally entangled states are considered, i.e.,
states having a non random phase factor between the two bipartite polarization
components, the standard settings used for optimal violation of Bell
inequalities are no longer adapted. One way to retrieve the maximal amount of
violation is to compensate for this phase while keeping the standard Bell
inequality analysis settings. We propose in this paper a general theoretical
approach that allows determining and adjusting the phase of elliptically
polarized maximally entangled states in order to optimize the violation of Bell
inequalities. The formalism is also applied to several suggested experimental
phase compensation schemes. In order to emphasize the simplicity and relevance
of our approach, we also describe an experimental implementation using a
standard Soleil-Babinet phase compensator. This device is employed to correct
the phase that appears in the maximally entangled state generated from a
type-II nonlinear photon-pair source after the photons are created and
distributed over fiber channels.Comment: 8 page
Luminous Red Galaxies in Simulations: Cosmic Chronometers?
There have been a number of attempts to measure the expansion rate of the
universe at high redshift using Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs) as "chronometers".
The method generally assumes that stars in LRGs are all formed at the same
time. In this paper, we quantify the uncertainties on the measurement of H(z)
which arise when one considers more realistic, extended star formation
histories. In selecting galaxies from the Millennium Simulation for this study,
we show that using rest-frame criteria significantly improves the homogeneity
of the sample and that H(z) can be recovered to within 3% at z~0.42 even when
extended star formation histories are considered. We demonstrate explicitly
that using Single Stellar Populations to age-date galaxies from the
semi-analytical simulations provides insufficient accuracy for this experiment
but accurate ages are obtainable if the complex star formation histories
extracted from the simulation are used. We note, however, that problems with
SSP-fitting might be overestimated since the semi-analytical models tend to
over predict the late-time star-formation in LRGs. Finally, we optimize an

Synthesis of cyclic alpha-diazo-beta-keto sulfoxides in batch and continuous flow
Diazo transfer to beta–keto sulfoxides to form stable isolable alpha-diazo-beta-keto sulfoxides has been achieved for the first time. Both monocyclic and benzofused ketone derived beta-keto sulfoxides were successfully explored as substrates for diazo transfer. Use of continuous flow leads to isolation of the desired compounds in enhanced yields relative to standard batch conditions, with short reaction times, increased safety profile and potential to scale up
