    Contribution of integrated farm management (IFM) to Defra objectives

    A farming system comprises a complex of interrelated and interacting factors. Any study of an isolated part of the system will not provide adequate understanding of the behaviour of the entire system and interactions may be equally or more important than individual components. There is therefore a requirement for the development of integrated approaches and practices to help farming systems adapt to, eliminate or reduce the negative impacts of production on the environment. This must be achieved whilst maintaining the economic viability of the farm enterprise. Our analysis has confirmed that IFM techniques generally have far more beneficial than adverse effects on current Defra policy objectives. However, there are some notable ‘conflicts’ where a technique that has a large beneficial effect in one policy area has a large negative effect in another. Carbon footprinting is used to quantify the impact of some integrated farming practices

    Comparisons of Visual Versus Kinesthetic Mental Imagery in Soccer Players: An EEG Study

    Mental imagery has been shown to effectively increase sport performances. However, limited studies have examined the underlying neurological influence of mental practice, especially with team sports. The current study investigated whether electroencephalogram (EEG) patterns differ based on an athlete\u27s ability to use mental imagery and if differences exist between the two types of mental imagery, visual versus kinesthetic, when mentally rehearsing specific soccer scenarios. Ten college elite soccer athletes and seven novices participated in this study. EEG data and self-rating were collected during mental rehearsal of three simple movements and three soccer scenarios applying either visual or kinesthetic mental imagery. Although visual mental imagery was predominantly preferred for both groups, the alpha amplitude of EEG significantly decreased during kinesthetic mental imagery of the soccer scenarios for the elite group, suggesting a deeper brain involvement than the novice group

    Pressure-solution features of the Birdbear Formation (Devonian), Williston Basin, North Dakota were the subject of this study. In the area studied, the Birdbear Formation is primarily a limestone with mud-rich textures. The investigation contained three principal phases: 1) a study of the parameters influencing the size and shape of the pressure-solution response, 2) the process of reactate dolomite formation and its relation to calcite neornorphism, and 3) the relation of neomorphism to pressure solution. The principal pressure-solution response types are stylolites and solution seams. Stylolites are pressuresolution seams with a tooth-and-socket, serrated shape. Pressure-solution seams are gently undulating to smooth in shape. In the first phase of the study, the parameters judged to be the most important in determining the shape and size of the pressure-solution response were depth of burial, texture of the host rock, and the cementation history. The amount of change with depth in individual wells had no detectable influence on the pressure-solution response, whereas a weak relation of increasing amplitude with increasing depth was found between wells. Texturally, the packstones had more peaked pressure-solution seams than did the other limestone textures, and mudstones hosted pressure-solution seams with the largest amplitudes. Because of the predominantly mud-rich textures of the samples, the role of cementation history in influencing pressure-solution response was difficult to determine. The second phase of the study concentrated on the formation of reactate dolomite, dolomite that grows in or near a pressure-solution seam. It was deduced that the physical environment of the pressure-solution seam is ideally suited to the formation of reactate dolomite. This environment is in the form of a pressure-solution sandwich composed of two layers of host rock, surrounding two boundary layers of water, and both around a central layer of clay-rich insoluble residue. These components provide nucleation sites, diffusion pathways, and ion sources for the formation of reactate dolomite. The relation between neomorphism and pressure solution is that they co-occur in a similar physico-chemical environment. In addition, reactate dolomite and another type of mesogenetic dolomite, point-source burial dolomite, can help propagate neomorphic calcite. The two dolomite types act as magnesium sinks, removing magnesium ions from the local fluid system allowing neomorphism to proceed

    The global economic impact of basketball is measured in tens of billions of dollars and requires the efficient use of resources to maximize success on and off the court. Today, coaches, players, investors, and owners need to take full advantage of modern analytical methods and digital video software capabilities to make the most efficient use of a teams resources. This research is the first in a series that makes full use of modern analytic methods and begins to define new defensive and offensive criteria to supplement the decades old game box score performance information. Data envelopment analysis and statistical methods are used to evaluate two new defensive performance metrics on defensive efficiency. The two new defensive metrics are contested and uncontested passes that are fully defined in the articles appendix. Future research will expand the sample size and allow for more comprehensive models of basketball team defensive efficiency
