    Exploring Inclusive Education from the Perspective of Preservice Teachers

    This study investigates the nature of preservice secondary teachers’ perceptions of the Individual Program Plan (IPP) process enrolled in a two-year Bachelor of Education program in a university in Eastern Canada. Teachers’ perceptions have been a vital feature in the successful implementation of the IPP process, and inclusion in general. Therefore, it will be crucial for educational leaders and stakeholders to have a clear understanding of preservice teachers’ perceptions of the IPP process and the factors that affect those perceptions prior to entering the profession. Results suggested that secondary preservice teachers’ tended to hold generally positive perceptions of the IPP process. A majority of preservice teachers responded positively to statements regarding the feasibility and relevance of the IPP process and held moderately positive views regarding accountability to the child on the IPP and to the process. Findings indicted however, that a majority of preservice teachers reported feeling unprepared to participate in the IPP process. Recommendations for preservice teacher education are suggested

    One Size Fits All? Tailored Integration Policies For Migrants in the European Union

    As media articles, academic papers and policy reports on the subject have pointed out, immigration to Europe has become more copious, diverse and complex than ever before, with migrants hailing from different cultural, economic and social backgrounds and from all corners of the world.They can be highly skilled or unskilled, temporary or permanent, and their motives and intentions are equally diverse. Reflecting this, immigration policies to manage the flow of migrants into the European Union have also becomemore complex in the last decade, at both the national and supranational level. Yet, despite government recognition that immigration and integration policies should be developed hand in hand, there is little evidence that the latter are being framed with as much attention to detail as the former.This paper looks at current national and EU integration policies, and compares existing policy parameters with the integration needs of some often-overlooked migrant populations within Europe, such as temporary migrant workers,international students and migrant workers from the EU-8 (the countries of central and eastern Europe which joined the EU in May 2004).This paper recommends that policy-makers take a more nuanced approach to integration, developing policies tailored to address the full range of migrant needs. It focuses on integrating newly-arrived migrants into Europe, and on the distinction that Member States make between those who arrive intending to settle and those who do not

    Empowering the unempowered : a narrative approach to deconstructing spirituality with women experiencing abuse

    A postmodern approach is used to examine various discourses with relevance to subject positioning and its effect on individual spirituality. The stories are located within different discourses, introducing a spiritual diversity. Through narrative, a holistic understanding of the spiritual experiences of two contemporary Christian women who have suffered abuse is provided, highlighting spirituality as an essential component to physical and psychosocial well-being. Contextual post-structural feminist theology and the social construction theory of reality informed this work. The performative function of language in social interaction is emphasised, situating language and relationship as key factors in the construction of individual identity and spirituality. Whilst recognising the constitutive force of discourse, the research highlights the notion that people can exercise choice in opposition to these discursive practices. Elements of spiritual transformation, hope and empowerment surfaced as counter stories to the culture of abuse, providing the scaffolding for re-storying their lives.Practical TheologyM.Th.     Of human bondage : investigating the relationship between anorexia nervosa/bulimia, spirituality and the body-self alliance

    A growing body of research recognizes spirituality as a key element in well-being, but the agency of individual spirituality remains unclear. This study explores the role of embodied knowledge in reality construction and its effect on illness by considering how spirituality as embodied existence shapes reality. Spirituality, as a form of embodied knowing, is shown to reach deeply into the fundamental relatedness of existence. The study argues for a mindbody- spirit unity, making no distinction between self and spirit, emotions and subjective experiences situated in the spirit. As the medium between body and self, spirituality gives form to the felt reality of embodied knowledge and meaning, shaping language, cognition, thought and action towards lived reality. New ways of thinking about eating disorders were stimulated by innovative discoveries through investigating the lived reality of the illness within an epistemology that included subjective experiences as part of reality. While acknowledging the influence of social discourse, the study calls for a recognition of vulnerability in the human condition giving rise to the embodiment of a wounded self or disenabling spirituality, manifested in the development of an eating disorder. It uncovers the anti-spiritual properties involved in the lived reality of people struggling with anorexia/bulimia, evident in social withdrawal and/or self-injury. Behavioural patterns of obsession and repetition underscore similarities to addiction and ritual. The study synthesised pastoral therapy and research. A postmodern approach to illness and a qualitative design with interpretive phenomenology were used. Three young women struggling with anorexia/bulimia participated in semi-structured research interviews. Their narrative accounts provided a chronology of developing, living with and healing from anorexia /bulimia. Emphasis shifted from an approach aimed at fixing the body to focusing on individual experiences of the illness; what she brought to the encounter in her own resources and potential to heal. Healing is envisaged as the ongoing development of a renewed sense of self, an inherently spiritual process orchestrated from within. Previous disassociation of body and self is replaced with reconnection between body, self and other, care of the spirit became care of the body, expressed in harmony and wholeness of being.Philosophy, Practical and Systematic TheologyTh.     Observing the earliest moments of supernovae using strong gravitational lenses

    We determine the viability of exploiting lensing time delays to observe strongly gravitationally lensed supernovae (gLSNe) from first light. Assuming a plausible discovery strategy, the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) and the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) will discover \sim 110 and \sim 1 systems per year before the supernova (SN) explosion in the final image respectively. Systems will be identified 11.79.3+29.811.7^{+29.8}_{-9.3} days before the final explosion. We then explore the possibility of performing early-time observations for Type IIP and Type Ia SNe in LSST-discovered systems. Using a simulated Type IIP explosion, we predict that the shock breakout in one trailing image per year will peak at \lesssim 24.1 mag (\lesssim 23.3) in the BB-band (F218WF218W), however evolving over a timescale of \sim 30 minutes. Using an analytic model of Type Ia companion interaction, we find that in the BB-band we should observe at least one shock cooling emission event per year that peaks at \lesssim 26.3 mag (\lesssim 29.6) assuming all Type Ia gLSNe have a 1 M_\odot red giant (main sequence) companion. We perform Bayesian analysis to investigate how well deep observations with 1 hour exposures on the European Extremely Large Telescope would discriminate between Type Ia progenitor populations. We find that if all Type Ia SNe evolved from the double-degenerate channel, then observations of the lack of early blue flux in 10 (50) trailing images would rule out more than 27% (19%) of the population having 1 M_\odot main sequence companions at 95% confidence.Comment: 17 pages, 15 figures (including appendices).     The idea of this book emerged from the Education Deans Forum (EDF) meeting held in Johannesburg in 2018. The forum discussed the twin issues of the 4IR and Decolonisation and how these were likely to impact the future development of Higher Education in South Africa. Essentially, this book provides scholarly analyses of a range of possible impacts of the two discourses. On one hand, the discourses are discussed as representing convergences and divergences in relation to their epistemological, ontological, axiological and methodological assumptions. On the other, they are portrayed as competing for dominance in the contemporary and future discourses in Higher Education. As a scholarly compilation of high-end research, the book is a must-read resource for academics generally and those in teacher education disciplines particularly. Issues of the automation of academic workspaces, impact of digital divides, the opportunities and constraints of the technologisation of curricula, pedagogies, teaching and learning and the intractable challenges of remote modalities of university instruction are dealt with by some of the leading thinkers in the South African academies
