    Chapter 10 The effect of topography on ash-cloud surge generation and propagation

    AbstractThe relationship between valley morphology and ash-cloud surge development for 12 pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) at Soufrière Hills Volcano (SHV), Montserrat is investigated. Channel slope, sinuosity and cross-sectional area were measured from high-resolution digital elevation models (DEMs) using geographical information system (GIS) software; and were compared to geometric parameters of the deposits. The data illustrate three surge-generation regimes: a proximal area of rapid expansion; a medial deflation zone; and a steadier distal surge ‘fringe'. The extent to which these regimes develop varies with flow volume. For larger flows, within the proximal and medial regimes, a strong inverse correlation exists between surge detachment and valley cross-sectional area. Surge detachment is also correlated with observed and modelled flow velocities. Areas of topography-induced increases in velocity are interpreted to result in more pervasive fragmentation and fluidization, and thus enhanced surge generation. Distally, surge deposits appear as fringes with decaying extents, indicative of more passive expansion and decreasing velocity. The results indicate that surge mobility and detachment are a complex product of flow mass flux and topography, and that future efforts to model dense–dilute coupled flows will need to account for and integrate several mechanisms acting on different parts of the flow.</jats:p

    Ash aggregation during the 11 February 2010 partial dome collapse of the Soufrière Hills Volcano, Montserrat

    On 11 February 2010, Soufrière Hills Volcano, Montserrat, underwent a partial dome collapse (~ 50 × 106 m3) and a short-lived Vulcanian explosion towards the end. Three main pyroclastic units were identified N and NE of the volcano: dome-collapse pyroclastic density current (PDC) deposits, fountain-collapse PDC deposits formed by the Vulcanian explosion, and tephra-fallout deposits associated with elutriation from the dome-collapse and fountain-collapse PDCs (i.e. co-PDC fallout deposit). The fallout associated with the Vulcanian explosion was mostly dispersed E and SE by high altitude winds. All units N and NE of the volcano contain variable amounts and types of particle aggregates, although the co-PDC fallout deposit is associated with the largest abundance (i.e. up to 24 wt%). The size of aggregates found in the co-PDC fallout deposit increases with distance from the volcano and proximity to the sea, reaching a maximum diameter of 12 mm about 500 m from the coast. The internal grain size of all aggregates have nearly identical distributions (with Mdϕ ≈ 4–5), with particles in the size categories > 3 ϕ (i.e. < 250 μm) being distributed in similar proportions within the aggregates but in different proportions within distinct internal layers. In fact, most aggregates are characterized by a coarse grained central core occupying the main part of the aggregate, coated by a thin layer of finer ash (single-layer aggregates), while others have one or two additional layers accreted over the core (multiple-layer aggregates). Calculated aggregate porosity and settling velocity vary between 0.3 and 0.5 and 11–21 m s− 1, respectively. The aggregate size shows a clear correlation with both the core size and the size of the largest particles found in the core. The large abundance of aggregates in the co-PDC fallout deposits suggests that the buoyant plumes elutriated above PDCs represent an optimal environment for the formation (particle collision) and development (aggregate layering) of particle aggregates. However, specific conditions are required, including i) a large availability of water (in this case provided by the steam plumes associated with the entrance of PDCs into the ocean), ii) presence of plume regions with different grain-size features (i.e. both median size and sorting) that allows for the development of multiple layers, iii) strong turbulence that permits both particle collision and the transition of the aggregates through different plume regions, iv) presence of hot regions (e.g. PDCs) that promote aggregate preservation (in this case also facilitated by the presence of sea salt)

    Explosive activity of the last 1000 years at La Soufrière, St Vincent, Lesser Antilles

    The products of explosive activity of La Soufrière volcano on the island of St Vincent over the last 1000 years are described. Dates for the different eruptions were determined using information from contemporary accounts, fieldwork and radiocarbon dating. Scoria-flow type pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) dominate the products of both the historical eruptions (1979, 1902–03, 1718/1812 CE) and prehistoric eruptions (~1580 and 1440 CE) with subordinate fallout components associated with several eruptions. Radiocarbon dating shows that these six eruptions define a crude cyclicity with repose periods ranging between 77 and ~140 years and systematically decreasing in more recent times. Two prehistoric eruptions, in ~1440 and 1580 CE respectively, both produced magmatic lapilli fallout and PDCs, and were fed by slightly more evolved magmas than the historical eruptions. The eruptions in 1902 and 1812 CE had ash-rich, possible phreatomagmatic activity at their onset. The iconic 1902–03 CE eruption generated radial distributed PDCs, which were responsible for the deaths of ~1500 people. However, only small remnants of these deposits remain and the original distribution cannot be determined from the preserved geology, which has important implications for hazard studies. Petrochemical work has shown that magmas involved in the explosive eruptions were quite narrow in compositional range, mainly comprising basaltic andesites. The 1902–03 eruption involved a late stage basaltic component in March 1903. However, activity in the last 1000 years generated notably more homogeneous magmas with a narrower range than the older eruptive periods previously reported in the literature, suggesting a significant variation in the magmatic reservoir feeding system with time

    Hepatic DNA damage in harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) stranded along the English and Welsh coastlines

    One level at which persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons PAHs) can exert damage is by causing DNA strand-breaks or nucleotide base modifications, which, if unrepaired, can lead to embryonic mutations, abnormal development and cancer. In marine ecosystems, genotoxicity is expected to be particularly strong in long-lived apex predators due to pollutant bioaccumulation. We conducted 32 P-postlabeling analyses optimized for the detection and quantification of aromatic/hydrophobic DNA adducts in the livers of 40 sexually-mature North Atlantic harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) stranded along the English and Welsh coastlines. We examined hepatic tissue to search for inflammatory and preneoplastic lesions and examine their association with adduct levels. Adducts were found in all porpoises (mean: 17.56 ± 11.95 per 108 nucleotides), and were higher than levels reported for marine vertebrates from polluted sites. The pollutants causing the induced DNA adducts could not be further characterized. Hepatic DNA damage did not correlate with levels of blubber POP concentrations (including total polychlorinated biphenyl [PCBs], dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane [DDT] and dieldrin); PAH concentrations were not available for the present study. However, DNA damage predicted occurrence of inflammatory and preneoplastic lesions. Further, our data showed a reduction in hepatic DNA adduct levels with age in the 40 animals examined while POP concentrations, particularly PCBs, increased with age. Using a different dataset of 145 mature male harbour porpoises confirmed that higher contaminant levels (total PCBs, DDT and dieldrin) are found in older animals. The reduction in hepatic DNA adduct levels in older animals was in accordance with other studies which show that suppression of hepatic CYP1A enzyme activity at high PCB concentrations might impact on CYP1A-mediated DNA adduct formation of PAHs which are ubiquitous environmental pollutants and readily metabolized by CYP1A to species binding to DNA. In summary, our study shows that pollutant-induced DNA damage is prevalent in harbour porpoises from UK waters and may lead to detectable sub-lethal hepatic damage

    Accurate detection of Neisseria gonorrhoeae ciprofloxacin susceptibility directly from genital and extragenital clinical samples: towards genotype-guided antimicrobial therapy.

    INTRODUCTION: Increasing use of nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs) as the primary means of diagnosing gonococcal infection has resulted in diminished availability of Neisseria gonorrhoeae antimicrobial susceptibility data. We conducted a prospective diagnostic assessment of a real-time PCR assay (NGSNP) enabling direct detection of gonococcal ciprofloxacin susceptibility from a range of clinical sample types. METHODS: NGSNP, designed to discriminate an SNP associated with ciprofloxacin resistance within the N. gonorrhoeae genome, was validated using a characterized panel of geographically diverse isolates (n = 90) and evaluated to predict ciprofloxacin susceptibility directly on N. gonorrhoeae-positive NAAT lysates derived from genital (n = 174) and non-genital (n = 116) samples (n = 290), from 222 culture-confirmed clinical episodes of gonococcal infection. RESULTS: NGSNP correctly genotyped all phenotypically susceptible (n = 49) and resistant (n = 41) panel isolates. Ciprofloxacin-resistant N. gonorrhoeae was responsible for infection in 29.7% (n = 66) of clinical episodes evaluated. Compared with phenotypic susceptibility testing, NGSNP demonstrated sensitivity and specificity of 95.8% (95% CI 91.5%-98.3%) and 100% (95% CI 94.7%-100%), respectively, for detecting ciprofloxacin-susceptible N. gonorrhoeae, with a positive predictive value of 100% (95% CI 97.7%-100%). Applied to urogenital (n = 164), rectal (n = 40) and pharyngeal samples alone (n = 30), positive predictive values were 100% (95% CI 96.8%-100%), 100% (95% CI 87.2%-100%) and 100% (95% CI 82.4%-100%), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Genotypic prediction of N. gonorrhoeae ciprofloxacin susceptibility directly from clinical samples was highly accurate and, in the absence of culture, will facilitate use of tailored therapy for gonococcal infection, sparing use of current empirical treatment regimens and enhancing acquisition of susceptibility data for surveillance

    Consequences of long-term volcanic activity for essential services in Montserrat: challenges, adaptations and resilience

    Long-term volcanic activity at Soufrière Hills Volcano (SHV), Montserrat (1995–ongoing) has created challenges for society and the resilience of the essential services (infrastructure) that support it. This paper explores the consequences, adaptations and resilience of essential services through interviews with their staff. We find that quick fixes for essential service reinstatement in the north of Montserrat have prevailed. Yet, the legacy of this approach inhibits functionality through inadequate facilities and the perception of sites as temporary, stalling investment. Emigration resulted in staff shortages, retraining requirements and challenges for the viability of specialist services. Low-impact hazards exacerbate shortcomings in essential services, causing power cuts, corrosion, and temporary closures of schools, clinics and the airport. Adaptations developed over time include changes to roofing materials, the addition of back-up systems, collaborative working and the development of contingency plans. Resilience of essential services has improved through decentralization, adaptations, and via strong community networks and tolerance of disruptions. Barriers to increasing resilience include the expense of some adaptations and the current reluctance to invest in essential services, hindering development. We offer some lessons for policy and practice to guide post-crisis redevelopment, through engagement with the community and by complementing community-level adaptations with investment to address long-term needs
