Preliminary capture trajectory design for Europa tomography probe

    Get PDF
The objective of this work is the preliminary design of a low-DV transfer from an initial elliptical orbit around Jupiter into a final circular orbit around the moon Europa. This type of trajectory represents an excellent opportunity for a low-cost mission to Europa, accomplished through a small orbiter, as in the proposed Europa Tomography Probe mission, a European contribution to NASA’s Europa Multiple-Flyby Mission (or Europa Clipper). The mission strategy is based on the v-infinity leveraging concept, and the use of resonant orbits to exploit multiple gravity-assist from the moon. Possible sequences of resonant orbits are selected with the help of the Tisserand graph. Suitable trajectories are provided by an optimization code based on the parallel running of several differential evolution algorithms. Different solutions are finally compared in terms of propellant consumption and flight time

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this selective EBM review is to determine whether or not “Does the use of intravenous zoledronic acid, in combination with chemotherapy regimens, arrest the development and spread of cancer cells to increase disease-free survival in breast cancer patients.“ STUDY DESIGN: Review of three English language primary randomized controlled trials published between 2009 and 2010. DATA SOURCES: Randomized controlled trials and open label, randomized, phase 2 trial comparing the use of zoledronic acid in combination with chemotherapy to the use of chemotherapy alone were found using Medline/PubMed and Cochrane Databases OUTCOMES MEASURED: The outcomes measured were incidence of metastasis, progression of disease, and disease-free survival. Mammography, breast ultrasound, MRI, CT scans, and histopathologic studies were used to measure these outcomes after treatment was received. RESULTS: Two randomized controlled trials and one open label, randomized, phase 2 trial were analyzed in this review. In Aft et al, patients treated with zoledronic acid and chemotherapy had fewer detectable disseminated tumor cells at 3 months than at baseline (p=0.054). In Coleman et al, the residual invasive tumor size after treatment and resection had an adjusted mean difference of 12mm between the two treatment groups (95% CI: 3.5-20.4mm, p= 0.006). Gnant et al demonstrated that the use of zoledronic acid in combination with chemotherapy had a 36% reduction in the risk of disease progression and a 35% reduction in the risk of recurrence compared to chemotherapy alone (p= 0.01 and 0.02, respectively). CONCLUSION: Based on these three trials, the results of this review were inconclusive. The studies analyzed suggest possible anti-tumor effects leading to increases in disease-free survival. Further research should be aimed at determining a particular chemotherapy plus zoledronic acid regimen and a specific patient population for which zoledronic acid is most effective

(Excerpt) The project of this Article is to assess U.S. welfare policy as a social institution, particularly with respect to modern notions of equality and social justice. In particular, the Article evaluates the Earned Income Tax Credit (“EITC”) in its role as a major aspect of the U.S. social safety net. The Article draws upon the moral and philosophical teachings of Pope Francis and John Rawls to create a political and legal framework to examine the EITC as a social institution that should, but does not, promote human dignity

The Meaning of Movement: Using Motion Design to Enrich Words for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children

    Get PDF
This thesis aims to address challenging areas of vocabulary for deaf and hard of hearing children by developing an open resource for students, parents, teachers, and content creators that utilizes motion to enhance written words for deaf and hard of hearing children. This research seeks to study the means of nonverbal communication such as body language expression and paralinguistic prosody (i.e., tone, intonation, volume, and pitch) qualities within the framework of graphic design through motion design. Body movement and expression are essential during face-to-face communication, but written language lacks such context clues. Additionally, the hard of hearing may not fully detect prosody within their range of hearing. This lack of information gathered through body language and paralanguage can be replicated with animated movement, which adds greater context to otherwise static text, enhancing insight into the meaning or use of a word. Seeing how a word in written form correlates with enhanced meaning through movement provides greater understanding and retention. This enhancement promotes improved communication in the world through graphic design. Motion design, specifically kinetic typography, offers a promising tool to help aid with language learning for continued exploration and development

Optimal Trajectories for Near-Earth-Objects Using Solar Electric Propulsion (SEP) and Gravity Assisted Maneuver

    Get PDF
The future interplanetary missions will probably use the conventional chemical rockets to leave the sphere of influence of the Earth, and solar electric propulsion (SEP) to accomplish the other maneuvers of the mission. In this work the optimization of interplanetary missions using solar electric propulsion and Gravity Assisted Maneuver to reduce the costs of the mission, is considered. The high specific impulse of electric propulsion makes a Gravity Assisted Maneuver 1 year after departure convenient. Missions for several Near Earth Asteroids will be considered. The analysis suggests criteria for the definition of initial solutions demanded for the process of optimization of trajectories. Trajectories for the asteroid 2002TC70 are analyzed. Direct trajectories, trajectories with 1 gravity assisted from the Earth and with 2 gravity assisted from the Earth and either Mars are present. An indirect optimization method will be used in the simulations

The right to be informed and fear of disclosure: sustainability of a full error disclosure policy at an italian cancer centre/clinic

    Get PDF
Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the behaviour of physicians in cases of medical error as well as the nature of the information that should be given to the patient and to ascertain whether it is possible to institute a full error disclosure policy. Data was collected through the completion of anonymous questionnaires by medical directors of the IRCCS CROB (the Oncology Centre of Basilicata, Italy). Methods: An anonymous questionnaire consisting of 15 questions was prepared and administered to all the physicians working at the IRCCS CROB – the Oncology Centre of Basilicata. The main aim of the research was to evaluate the feasibility of adopting a full disclosure policy and the extent to which such a policy could help reduce administration and legal costs. Results: The physicians interviewed unanimously recognize the importance of error disclosure, given that they themselves would want to be informed if they were the patients. However, 50% have never disclosed a medical error to their patients. Fear of losing the patient’s trust (33%) and fear of lawsuits (31%) are the main obstacles to error disclosure. Conclusions: The authors found that physicians were in favour of a full policy disclosure at the IRCCS CROB – the Oncology Centre of Basilicata. Many more studies need to be carried out in order to comprehend the economic impact of a full error disclosure policy
