    Object use affects motor planning in infant prehension

    The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors underlying the ability to plan object-oriented grasping movements in the first two years of life. In particular, we were interested in evaluating the relationship between manual motor planning, object use and infant-parent interaction. In order to achieve this aim, grasping behaviors of nineteen healthy infants, aged nine to 25 months, were examined during naturalistic play sessions with a standard set of toys. Our main finding was that, regardless of age, infants perform a better manual planning when they use an object in a functional rather than non-functional way, suggesting that the planning of an action also depends on knowing the functional properties of an object. In addition, we found that the ability to use objects in a functional way was strongly affected by infant-parent interaction. Thus, level of object use and environmental role must be taken into account in order to understand the development of manual motor planning

    Early Neolithic wine of Georgia in the South Caucasus

    Chemical analyses of ancient organic compounds absorbed into the pottery fabrics from sites in Georgia in the South Caucasus region, dating to the early Neolithic period (ca. 6,000-5,000 BC), provide the earliest biomolecular archaeological evidence for grape wine and viniculture from the Near East, at ca. 6,000-5,800 BC. The chemical findings are corroborated by climatic and environmental reconstruction, together with archaeobotanical evidence, including grape pollen, starch, and epidermal remains associated with a jar of similar type and date. The very large-capacity jars, some of the earliest pottery made in the Near East, probably served as combination fermentation, aging, and serving vessels. They are the most numerous pottery type at many sites comprising the so-called "Shulaveri-Shomutepe Culture" of the Neolithic period, which extends into western Azerbaijan and northern Armenia. The discovery of early sixth millennium BC grape wine in this region is crucial to the later history of wine in Europe and the rest of the world

    COVID-19 Severity in Multiple Sclerosis: Putting Data Into Context

    Background and objectives: It is unclear how multiple sclerosis (MS) affects the severity of COVID-19. The aim of this study is to compare COVID-19-related outcomes collected in an Italian cohort of patients with MS with the outcomes expected in the age- and sex-matched Italian population. Methods: Hospitalization, intensive care unit (ICU) admission, and death after COVID-19 diagnosis of 1,362 patients with MS were compared with the age- and sex-matched Italian population in a retrospective observational case-cohort study with population-based control. The observed vs the expected events were compared in the whole MS cohort and in different subgroups (higher risk: Expanded Disability Status Scale [EDSS] score > 3 or at least 1 comorbidity, lower risk: EDSS score ≤ 3 and no comorbidities) by the χ2 test, and the risk excess was quantified by risk ratios (RRs). Results: The risk of severe events was about twice the risk in the age- and sex-matched Italian population: RR = 2.12 for hospitalization (p < 0.001), RR = 2.19 for ICU admission (p < 0.001), and RR = 2.43 for death (p < 0.001). The excess of risk was confined to the higher-risk group (n = 553). In lower-risk patients (n = 809), the rate of events was close to that of the Italian age- and sex-matched population (RR = 1.12 for hospitalization, RR = 1.52 for ICU admission, and RR = 1.19 for death). In the lower-risk group, an increased hospitalization risk was detected in patients on anti-CD20 (RR = 3.03, p = 0.005), whereas a decrease was detected in patients on interferon (0 observed vs 4 expected events, p = 0.04). Discussion: Overall, the MS cohort had a risk of severe events that is twice the risk than the age- and sex-matched Italian population. This excess of risk is mainly explained by the EDSS score and comorbidities, whereas a residual increase of hospitalization risk was observed in patients on anti-CD20 therapies and a decrease in people on interferon

    DMTs and Covid-19 severity in MS: a pooled analysis from Italy and France

    We evaluated the effect of DMTs on Covid-19 severity in patients with MS, with a pooled-analysis of two large cohorts from Italy and France. The association of baseline characteristics and DMTs with Covid-19 severity was assessed by multivariate ordinal-logistic models and pooled by a fixed-effect meta-analysis. 1066 patients with MS from Italy and 721 from France were included. In the multivariate model, anti-CD20 therapies were significantly associated (OR = 2.05, 95%CI = 1.39–3.02, p < 0.001) with Covid-19 severity, whereas interferon indicated a decreased risk (OR = 0.42, 95%CI = 0.18–0.99, p = 0.047). This pooled-analysis confirms an increased risk of severe Covid-19 in patients on anti-CD20 therapies and supports the protective role of interferon

    L'obiettivo finale del movimento di prensione è uno dei fattori che influenzano le caratteristiche cinematiche del reaching e del grasping e la modalità di approccio all'oggetto. Questa capacità di anticipare l’azione che verrà realizzata dopo la presa è fondamentale per l'uso complesso di oggetti e di strumenti. La maturazione della prensione nel bambino appare strettamente legata allo sviluppo cognitivo e all'interazione con gli oggetti nell'ambiente circostante. Alcune patologie neurologiche, come la disprassia evolutiva e le paralisi cerebrali infantili, sono caratterizzate da un'alterazione del pattern di prensione, causata da un deficit a livello esecutivo e di pianificazione motoria. Inoltre in tali patologie è frequente il riscontro di problematiche cognitive. Lo scopo di questo studio è indagare nei bambini sani la capacità di anticipare l’uso dell'oggetto afferrato, attraverso un'opportuna preparazione della mano prima e durante l'approccio all'oggetto stesso; abbiamo analizzato anche il ruolo svolto dai fattori cognitivi e contestuali. Dodici bambini con sviluppo tipico, di età compresa tra 9 e 25 mesi, sono stati videoregistrati nella propria casa durante attività di gioco libero con oggetti. L'analisi dei video, in tempo reale ed in modalità sequenziale, ci ha consentito di studiare la pianificazione attraverso la codifica delle seguenti variabili: tipo di presa, postura della mano prima del contatto, pulizia della presa, strategia di contatto con l’oggetto, schema d'azione realizzato dopo il grasping, sguardo e contesto. I risultati mostrano il ruolo reciproco che i fattori maturativi e quelli individuali svolgono ai fini dell'acquisizione di pattern di interazione mano-oggetto adeguati e complessi. La comprensione dei processi di sviluppo nel bambino sano costituisce un valido riferimento per identificare livelli distinti di disfunzione motoria nei bambini con patologia neurologica ed impostare un adeguato trattamento riabilitativo

    Bone Health Status in Individuals with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis: A Cross-Sectional Study on the Role of the Trabecular Bone Score and Its Implications in Neurorehabilitation

    Background and Objectives: Osteoporosis is a metabolic skeletal disease resulting in low bone mass with increased bone fragility and susceptibility to fractures. May lead to rapid loss of bone mineral density (BMD) due to physical inactivity and reduced muscle contractions. Generally, the diagnosis of osteoporosis is made using dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), by measuring BMD and the trabecular bone score (TBS), which can be useful for detecting bone fragility and susceptibility to fractures. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate, using BMD and TBS, the bone health status in a sample of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) inpatients attending neurorehabilitation. Materials and Methods: Thirty-nine patients were included in the study and underwent electrocardiogram and blood tests, including calcium and parathyroid hormone, as well as vitamin D dosage, and DXA. Results: We found that the TBS of patients with osteoporosis was lower than that of those ALS patients with osteopenia or normal bone status, both in the lumbar spine and femoral neck, although no statistical significance was reached. In addition, Spearman’s correlation coefficient indicated a moderate correlation between TBS and lumbar spine BMD (r = −0.34) and a mild correlation between TBS and femoral neck BMD (r = −0.28). Conclusions: This study confirmed the hypothesis that ALS patients may exhibit deteriorated bone health with lower bone density and focused on the possible role of the TBS in the multidisciplinary approach to ALS
