    The role of body wall muscles in C. elegans locomotion

    Over the past four decades, one of the simplest nervous systems across the animal kingdom, that of the nematode worm C. elegans, has drawn increasing attention. This system is the subject of an intensive concerted effort to understand the behaviour of an entire living animal, from the bottom up and the top down. C. elegans locomotion, in particular, has been the subject of a number of models, but there is as yet no general agreement about the key (rhythm generating) elements. In this paper we investigate the role of one component of the locomotion subsystem, namely the body wall muscles, with a focus on the role of inter-muscular gap junctions. We construct a detailed electrophysiological model which suggests that these muscles function, to a first approximation, as mere actuators and have no obvious rhythm generating role. Furthermore, we show that within our model inter-muscular coupling is too weak to have a significant electrical effect. These results rule out muscles as key generators of locomotion, pointing instead to neural activity patterns. More specifically, the results imply that the reduced locomotion velocity observed in unc-9 mutants is likely to be due to reduced neuronal rather than inter-muscular coupling

In this paper we present a first integrated neuro-mechanical model of forward locomotion. We find that a previous neural model is robust to the addition of a body with mechanical properties, and that the integrated model produces oscillations with a more realistic frequency and waveform than the neural model alone. We conclude that the body and environment are likely to be important components of the worm’s locomotion subsystem

    Immunosuppressive macrophages induced by arthropathic peptidoglycan-polysaccharide polymers from bacterial cell walls.

    Rats injected with peptidoglycan-polysaccharide polymers derived from group A streptococcal cell walls (PG-APS) develop a chronic, remittant, erosive synovitis. Spleen cells from injected rats failed to proliferate when stimulated in vitro by Con A or PHA, unless nylon wool adherent cells were first removed. The suppression could also be reversed by removing phagocytic cells which had ingested carbonyl iron. Cells from control rats were suppressed in vitro by co-culture with unfractionated or nylon wool-adherent cells from PG-APS injected rats, and the suppressor activity was still expressed after exposure of the suppressor cells to 3,000 rad of irradiation. Addition of catalase and indomethacin to cultures only partially reversed the suppression. T lymphocytes from rats given a single arthropathic dose of PG-APS remained suppressed for at least 86 days after injection. Cells from rats given a low, non-arthropathic dose of PG-APS did not become suppressed. Cells from the Buffalo rat, which is resistant to development of PG-APS-induced chronic arthritis, showed less suppression than cells from the susceptible Lewis and Sprague-Dawley rat strains

    Selection rules for J^PC Exotic Hybrid Meson Decay in Large-N_c

    The coupling of a neutral hybrid {1,3,5...}^-+ exotic particle (or current) to two neutral (hybrid) meson particles with the same J^PC and J=0 is proved to be sub-leading to the usual large-N_c QCD counting. The coupling of the same exotic particle to certain two - (hybrid) meson currents with the same J^PC and J=0 is also sub-leading. The decay of a {1,3,5...}^-+ hybrid to eta pi^0, eta' pi^0, eta' eta, eta(1295) pi^0, pi(1300)^0 pi0, eta(1440) pi^0, a_0(980)^0 sigma or f_0(980) sigma is sub-leading, assuming that these final state particles are (hybrid) mesons in the limit of large N_c.Comment: 16 pages, LaTeX.     We consider a tippe top modeled as an eccentric sphere, spinning on a horizontal table and subject to a sliding friction. Ignoring translational effects, we show that the system is reducible using a Routhian reduction technique.     Motivation as a predictor of outcomes in school-based humanistic counselling

    Recent years have seen a growth in the provision of counselling within UK secondary schools, and research indicates that it is associated with significant reductions in psychological distress. However, little is known about the moderators and mediators of positive therapeutic benefit. In the field of adult mental health, motivation has been found to be one of the strongest predictors of therapeutic outcomes, and it was hypothesised that this may also be a predictor of outcomes for young people in school-based counselling services. To assess the relationship between young people’s motivation for counselling and its effectiveness within a secondary school setting. Eighty-one young people (12 - 17 years old) who attended school-based humanistic counselling services in Scotland. Clients completed a measure of motivation for counselling at the commencement of their therapeutic work and a measure of psychological wellbeing at the commencement and termination of counselling. Motivation for counselling was not found to be significantly related to outcomes. The results indicate that the association between motivation and outcomes may be weaker in young people as compared with adults. However, a number of design factors may also account for the non-significant findings: insufficient participants, marginal reliability of the motivation measure and social desirability effects

    Total daily energy expenditure in black and white, lean and obese South African women.

    Background/Objectives:In South Africa (SA), the prevalence of obesity in women is 56%, with black women being most at risk (62%). Studies in the United States have demonstrated ethnic differences in resting (REE) and total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) between African American (AA) and their white counterparts. We investigated whether differences in EE exist in black and white SA women, explaining, in part, the ethnic obesity prevalence differences.Subjects/Methods:We measured REE, TDEE and physical activity EE (PAEE) in lean (BMI 30 kg m(-2)) SA women (N=44, 30+/-6 year). REE, TDEE, PAEE and total awake EE were measured during a 21 h stay in a respiration chamber.Results:Black and white subjects within obese and lean groups were not significantly different for age, mass, BMI and % body fat. However, fat-free mass (kg FFM) was consistently lower in the black women (P<0.01) in both weight groups. After adjusting EE measurements for differences in FFM, REE was not significantly different for either body weight or ethnicity, although 24 h TDEE (kJ) was significantly greater in the obese women (P<0.01) and white women (P<0.05). Total awake non-PAEE was not significantly different for either groups, while total awake time was only significantly lower for the lean groups (P<0.01). Total PAEE (kJ min(-1)) was significantly lower in the lean (P<0.001) and black groups (P<0.01).Conclusions:In this sample of matched, lean and obese, black and white SA women, differences in TDEE were largely explained by ethnic differences in PAEE, and were not as a result of ethnic differences in REE.European Journal of Clinical Nutrition advance online publication, 13 February 2008; doi:10.1038/ejcn.2008.8

    Characterisation of a three-dimensional Brownian motor in optical lattices

    We present here a detailed study of the behaviour of a three dimensional Brownian motor based on cold atoms in a double optical lattice [P. Sjolund et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 190602 (2006)]. This includes both experiments and numerical simulations of a Brownian particle. The potentials used are spatially and temporally symmetric, but combined spatiotemporal symmetry is broken by phase shifts and asymmetric transfer rates between potentials. The diffusion of atoms in the optical lattices is rectified and controlled both in direction and speed along three dimensions. We explore a large range of experimental parameters, where irradiances and detunings of the optical lattice lights are varied within the dissipative regime.
