The international response to Darfur
Darfur is regularly debated by the UN Security Council, African Union forces have been deployed and some 9,000 humanitarian workers are trying to help over two million displaced people. Clearly, Darfur cannot be described as a ‘forgotten emergency’. Why, then, does fighting persist and the needs of many of the uprooted go unmet
Darfur a debate
Altering Habit-Bound Thinking through a Critical Thinking Skills Approach to Children\u27s Literature
As an educator, I have encountered many students who appear incapable of critically evaluating material. The result is that they are unable to think issues through and arrive at a logical conclusion. I feel student’s don’t have the necessary critical thinking skills (as the dictionary defines them) “to determine, resolve, work out, etc. by reasoning; to use the mind for arriving at conclusions, making decisions; drawing inferences.” The lack of critical thinking skills is evident early in the year, and as I teach the lessons contained in the curriculum, I realize that many children’s skills are not likely to improve. I question whether the previous teacher has prepared the students and know that the following September the teacher who receives these students will ask the same question. In trying to address this problem which I have encountered in the classroom, I am caught in the dilemma of whether to met the needs of my students as I seen them or to teach the curriculum as prescribed by the administration. My practice, and the practice of most teachers, has been to emphasize the latter
Quantum Bose Josephson Junction with binary mixtures of BECs
We study the quantum behaviour of a binary mixture of Bose-Einstein
condensates (BEC) in a double-well potential starting from a two-mode
Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian. We focus on the small tunneling amplitude regime and
apply perturbation theory up to second order. Analytical expressions for the
energy eigenvalues and eigenstates are obtained. Then the quantum evolution of
the number difference of bosons between the two potential wells is fully
investigated for two different initial conditions: completely localized states
and coherent spin states. In the first case both the short and the long time
dynamics is studied and a rich behaviour is found, ranging from small amplitude
oscillations and collapses and revivals to coherent tunneling. In the second
case the short-time scale evolution of number difference is determined and a
more irregular dynamics is evidenced. Finally, the formation of Schroedinger
cat states is considered and shown to affect the momentum distribution.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figure
Reflexivity and flexibility: Complementary routes to innovation?
Flexibility and reflexivity are essential processes for organisational innovation. The aim of the paper is to investigate their concurrent and interactive contribution in enhancing two innovation outcomes (the organisational openness towards innovation and the actual innovation adoption). Participants were 357 Italian employees. Results of a hierarchical regression model showed the role of both factors in fostering the two innovation outcomes under study. In addition, results showed the complementary interaction of reflexivity and flexibility, outlining two possible routes to innovation. Specifically, reflexivity appears to be a generative learning process capable of encouraging innovation in low-flexibility conditions, whereas flexibility tends to encourage innovation in low-reflexivity conditions. The findings provide empirical support of their roles as complementary resources for innovation, which has been under-examined in the literature
