Thermal quantum electrodynamics of nonrelativistic charged fluids
The theory relevant to the study of matter in equilibrium with the radiation
field is thermal quantum electrodynamics (TQED). We present a formulation of
the theory, suitable for non relativistic fluids, based on a joint functional
integral representation of matter and field variables. In this formalism
cluster expansion techniques of classical statistical mechanics become
operative. They provide an alternative to the usual Feynman diagrammatics in
many-body problems which is not perturbative with respect to the coupling
constant. As an application we show that the effective Coulomb interaction
between quantum charges is partially screened by thermalized photons at large
distances. More precisely one observes an exact cancellation of the dipolar
electric part of the interaction, so that the asymptotic particle density
correlation is now determined by relativistic effects. It has still the
decay typical for quantum charges, but with an amplitude strongly

Représentations sociales et identité : des relations complexes et multiples
Dans cet article, les auteurs confrontent différentes conceptions théoriques des relations entre représentations sociales et identité sociale et personnelle, telles qu’elles ont été développées dans la littérature en psychologie sociale. Ces approches témoignent de l’existence de nombreux liens psychosociaux entre un individu toujours en construction et en évolution et un monde social constamment réinterprété. Certaines mettent en perspective des théories de l’identité et du soi avec la théorie des représentations sociales. L’exposé permet de discerner plusieurs points de convergence entre ces conceptions et soulève des questions relatives à chacun de ces concepts.In this article, the authors give an account of different theoretical conceptions of the relationship between social representations, social identity and personal identity, as developed within the literacy of social psychology. These approaches pinpoint that many psychosocial processes exist between the individual in the situation of self-construction and a social world always perceived in a subjective way. Some of these approaches consist in connecting identity and self models with the theory of social representations, conceived by Moscovici. The article tries to show some of these connected points between these different conceptions and to draw some new research issues
Rationale and design of LUX-Head & Neck 1: a randomised, Phase III trial of afatinib versus methotrexate in patients with recurrent and/or metastatic head and neck squamous cell carcinoma who progressed after platinum-based therapy
Background: Patients with recurrent and/or metastatic (R/M) head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) receiving platinum-based chemotherapy as their first-line treatment have a dismal prognosis, with a median overall survival (OS) of ~7 months. Methotrexate is sometimes used following platinum failure or in patients not fit enough for platinum therapy, but this agent has not demonstrated any OS improvement. Targeted therapies are a novel approach, with the EGFR-targeting monoclonal antibody cetuximab (plus platinum-based chemotherapy) approved in the US and Europe in the first-line R/M setting, and as monotherapy following platinum failure in the US. However, there is still a high unmet medical need for new treatments that improve outcomes in the second-line R/M setting following failure on first-line platinum-containing regimens. Afatinib, an irreversible ErbB family blocker, was recently approved for the first-line treatment of EGFR mutation-positive metastatic non-small cell lung cancer. Afatinib has also shown clinical activity similar to cetuximab in a Phase II proof-of-concept HNSCC trial. Based on these observations, the Phase III, LUX-Head & Neck 1 study is evaluating afatinib versus methotrexate in R/M HNSCC patients following progression on platinum-based chemotherapy in the R/M setting. Methods/Design Patients with progressive disease after one first-line platinum-based chemotherapy are randomised 2:1 to oral afatinib (starting dose 40 mg once daily) or IV methotrexate (starting dose 40 mg/m2 once weekly) administered as monotherapy with best supportive care until progression or intolerable adverse events. Efficacy of afatinib versus methotrexate will be assessed in terms of progression-free survival (primary endpoint). Disease progression will be evaluated according to RECIST v1.1 by investigator and independent central review. Secondary endpoints include OS, tumour response and safety. Health-related quality of life and biomarker assessments will also be performed. Discussion If the LUX-Head & Neck 1 trial meets its primary endpoint, it will demonstrate the ability of afatinib to elicit an improved treatment benefit versus a commonly used chemotherapy agent in the second-line treatment of R/M HNSCC patients who have failed on first-line platinum-based therapy, confirm the clinical efficacy of afatinib observed in the Phase II proof-of-concept study, and establish a new standard of care for this patient population
Equilibrium correlations in charged fluids coupled to the radiation field
We provide an exact microscopic statistical treatment of particle and field
correlations in a system of quantum charges in equilibrium with a classical
radiation field. Using the Feynman-Kac-Ito representation of the Gibbs weight,
the system of particles is mapped onto a collection of random charged wires.
The field degrees of freedom can be integrated out, providing an effective
pairwise magnetic potential. We then calculate the contribution of the
transverse field coupling to the large-distance particle correlations. The
asymptotics of the field correlations in the plasma are also exactly

Inelastic X-ray Scattering by Electronic Excitations in Solids at High Pressure
Investigating electronic structure and excitations under extreme conditions
gives access to a rich variety of phenomena. High pressure typically induces
behavior such as magnetic collapse and the insulator-metal transition in 3d
transition metals compounds, valence fluctuations or Kondo-like characteristics
in -electron systems, and coordination and bonding changes in molecular
solids and glasses. This article reviews research concerning electronic
excitations in materials under extreme conditions using inelastic x-ray
scattering (IXS). IXS is a spectroscopic probe of choice for this study because
of its chemical and orbital selectivity and the richness of information it
provides. Being an all-photon technique, IXS has a penetration depth compatible
with high pressure requirements. Electronic transitions under pressure in 3d
transition metals compounds and -electron systems, most of them strongly
correlated, are reviewed. Implications for geophysics are mentioned. Since the
incident X-ray energy can easily be tuned to absorption edges, resonant IXS,
often employed, is discussed at length. Finally studies involving local
structure changes and electronic transitions under pressure in materials

Effect of C282Y genotype on self-reported musculoskeletal complications in hereditary hemochromatosis
Objective Arthropathy that mimics osteoarthritis (OA) and osteoporosis (OP) is considered a complication of hereditary hemochromatosis (HH). We have limited data comparing OA and OP prevalence among HH patients with different hemochromatosis type 1 (HFE) genotypes. We investigated the prevalence of OA and OP in patients with HH by C282Y homozygosity and compound heterozygosity (C282Y/H63D) genotype. Methods A total of 306 patients with HH completed a questionnaire. Clinical and demographic characteristics and presence of OA, OP and related complications were compared by genotype, adjusting for age, sex, body mass index (BMI), current smoking and menopausal status. Results In total, 266 of the 306 patients (87%) were homozygous for C282Y, and 40 (13%) were compound heterozygous. The 2 groups did not differ by median age [60 (interquartile range [IQR] 53 to 68) vs. 61 (55 to 67) years, P=0.8], sex (female: 48.8% vs. 37.5%, P=0.18) or current smoking habits (12.4% vs. 10%, P=0.3). As compared with compound heterozygous patients, C282Y homozygous patients had higher median serum ferritin concentration at diagnosis [1090 (IQR 610 to 2210) vs. 603 (362 to 950) mu g/L, P<0.001], higher median transferrin saturation [80% (IQR 66 to 91%) vs. 63% (55 to 72%), P<0.001]) and lower median BMI [24.8 (22.1 to 26.9) vs. 26.2 (23.5 to 30.3) kg/m2, P<0.003]. The overall prevalence of self-reported OA was significantly higher with C282Y homozygosity than compound heterozygosity (53.4% vs. 32.5%; adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 2.4 [95% confidence interval 1.2-5.0]), as was self-reported OP (25.6% vs. 7.5%; aOR 3.5 [1.1-12.1]). Effects of brain polarization on reaction times and pinch force in chronic stroke
BACKGROUND: Previous studies showed that anodal transcranial DC stimulation (tDCS) applied to the primary motor cortex of the affected hemisphere (M1(affected hemisphere)) after subcortical stroke transiently improves performance of complex tasks that mimic activities of daily living (ADL). It is not known if relatively simpler motor tasks are similarly affected. Here we tested the effects of tDCS on pinch force (PF) and simple reaction time (RT) tasks in patients with chronic stroke in a double-blind cross-over Sham-controlled experimental design. RESULTS: Anodal tDCS shortened reaction times and improved pinch force in the paretic hand relative to Sham stimulation, an effect present in patients with higher impairment. CONCLUSION: tDCS of M1(affected hemisphere )can modulate performance of motor tasks simpler than those previously studied, a finding that could potentially benefit patients with relatively higher impairment levels
