The Role of Psychological Resilience and Family Dysfunction in the Relationship Between Parental Behavioural Addictions and Adult Mental Health
The current study assesses the mediating role that family dysfunction and psychological resilience have in the relationship between growing up with a parent with parental addictions and developing mental health difficulties and/or addiction in adulthood. Participants included 292 adults (76.1% women), who completed an online questionnaire reporting on whether their parent(s) had behavioural addictions, their family environment during childhood, the degree of substance and behaviours dependence, and psychological symptoms and psychological resilience in the present. It was found that parental behavioural addictions were linked to more disruptive family environments during childhood and that disruptive family environments were then linked to reduced levels of psychological resilience, which in turn were linked to lower levels of mental health. Overall, the results suggest that a disruptive family environment during childhood together with psychological resilience seem to play a key role when looking at long–term negative impact of parental behavioural addictions
Predicting learning and achievement using GABA and glutamate concentrations in human development
Previous research has highlighted the role of glutamate and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in learning and plasticity. What is currently unknown is how this knowledge translates to real-life complex cognitive abilities that emerge slowly and how the link between these neurotransmitters and human learning and plasticity is shaped by development. While some have suggested a generic role of glutamate and GABA in learning and plasticity, others have hypothesized that their involvement shapes sensitive periods during development. Here we used a cross-sectional longitudinal design with 255 individuals (spanning primary school to university) to show that glutamate and GABA in the intraparietal sulcus explain unique variance both in current and future mathematical achievement (approximately 1.5 years). Furthermore, our findings reveal a dynamic and dissociable role of GABA and glutamate in predicting learning, which is reversed during development, and therefore provide novel implications for models of learning and plasticity during childhood and adulthood
Les livres 41-42 des Histoires Philippiques de Trogue-Pompée résumées par Justin
International audienceThis article «A Study of the Books 41-42 of Justin's Epitome of the Philippic History of Pompeius Trogus» is an attempt to determine, through the study of the books 41-42 of the Philippic History of Pompeius Trogus, what kind of knowledge a learned Roman living in Augustus' era had about the Parthians. It deals essentially, once again, with the question of Trogus' sources. The analysis of the text lets appear that Trogus combines informations coming from a Greek work specifi cally dedicated to Parthian history and civilization, probably the Parthica of Apollodorus of Artemita, with elements deriving from Roman observations and with his own personal refl exions. This is true for the historical chapters as well as for the ethnographical ones. In consequence, one should consider this text as expressing Trogus' own vision of the Parthians, and not as simply refl ecting a lost source
Accurate PCR detection of influenza A/B and respiratory syncytial viruses by use of Cepheid Xpert Flu+RSV Xpress Assay in point-of-care settings: Comparison to Prodesse ProFlu+
ABSTRACT
The Xpert Flu+RSV Xpress Assay is a fast, automated
in vitro
diagnostic test for qualitative detection and differentiation of influenza A and B viruses and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) performed on the Cepheid GeneXpert Xpress System. The objective of this study was to establish performance characteristics of the Xpert Flu+RSV Xpress Assay compared to those of the Prodesse ProFlu+ real-time reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR) assay (ProFlu+) for the detection of influenza A and B viruses as well as RSV in a Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA)-waived (CW) setting. Overall, the assay, using fresh and frozen nasopharyngeal (NP) swabs, demonstrated high concordance with results of the ProFlu+ assay in the combined CW and non-CW settings with positive percent agreements (PPA) (100%, 100%, and 97.1%) and negative percent agreements (NPA) (95.2%, 99.5%, and 99.6%) for influenza A and B viruses and RSV, respectively. In conclusion, this multicenter study using the Cepheid Xpert Flu+RSV Xpress Assay demonstrated high sensitivities and specificities for influenza A and B viruses and RSV in ∼60 min for use at the point-of-care in the CW setting.

It Takes a Village: Evaluating the Feasibility and Acceptability of a Community-Based Parenting Program
Background: A community-academic partnership responded to a community-voiced need to address parenting challenges while living in poverty.
Purpose: To evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of a community-based intervention that included positive parenting strategies to build and support healthy families, and behavioral health promotion.
Design: Multi-method pilot study
Findings: Focus group participants (n=11) valued the program highly. There were no changes in participants' (n=36) Perceived Stress Scale scores after program completion (p>0.05, d=0.063).
Conclusions: Participants were highly engaged throughout the program and requested a longer duration of the intervention to continue to build social connectivity
PERSONALIZED INDEXING OF MUSIC BY EMOTIONS
How a person interprets music and what prompts a person to feel certain emotions are two very subjective things. This dissertation presents a method where a system can learn and track a user’s listening habits with the purpose of recommending songs that fit the user’s specific way of interpreting music and emotions. First a literature review is presented which shows an overview of the current state of recommender systems, as well as describing classifiers; then the process of collecting user data is discussed; then the process of training and testing personalized classifiers is described; finally a system combining the personalized classifiers with clustered data into a hierarchy of recommender systems is presented
When change is the only constant:The promise of longitudinal neuroimaging in understanding social anxiety disorder
Longitudinal studies offer a unique window into developmental change. Yet, most of what we know about the pathophysiology of psychiatric disorders is based on cross-sectional work. Here, we highlight the importance of adopting a longitudinal approach in order to make progress into the identification of neurobiological mechanisms of social anxiety disorder (SAD). Using examples, we illustrate how longitudinal data can uniquely inform SAD etiology and timing of interventions. The brain’s inherently adaptive quality requires that we model risk correlates of disorders as dynamic in their expression. Developmental theories regarding timing of environmental events, cascading effects and (mal)adaptations of the developing brain will be crucial components of comprehensive, integrative models of SAD. We close by discussing analytical considerations in working with longitudinal, developmental data
