We studied it using several statistical methods applied to the answers given by companies to a questionnaire. All rights reserved.Stiffness and strength are important structural design criteria. However, most contributions to Topology Optimization (TO) deal with the compliance minimization problem. Controlling stresses in a structure is very important to avoid material failure, but that raises complications in TO, such as: nonlinearity, singularity and high computational cost. The total weight of a structure is also another important criterion in optimal design. The multi-material setting is considered in the present work as it opens the possibility to improve structural performance even further allowing extra weight reduction. Recursive SIMP is used as the material interpolation scheme and design solutions are sought using the ground structure approach. This means that truss-like (lattice) designs are obtained here. The problem is relaxed to the continuum by introducing an artificial density variable and it is solved by a gradientbased algorithm (MMA). A stress-constraint relaxation technique (qp-approach) is applied to overcome the stress singularity phenomenon. A continuation approach is used to guarantee discrete solutions, i.e., only the presence or absence of bars is identified. Therefore, design uniformity in terms of bars cross section areas is ensured. Hence, this work proposes a methodology to perform Multi-Material Topology Optimization (MMTO) of truss structures, with density-based design variables, and subject to stress constraints. To discuss the differences between stiffness and strength-oriented optimal designs, a compliance minimization problem subject to mass constraint is also considered. The example chosen demonstrates the viability of the proposed design methodology and it also reveals differences between the strongest and the stiffest designs.authorsversionpublishe

    Semi-pelagic Longline and Trammel Net Elasmobranch Catches in Southern Portugal: Catch Composition, Catch Rates and Discards

    In Portugal, elasmobranch landings have decreased substantially in recent years. In this work, elasmobranch catches in semi-pelagic longlines (1997 and 1998) were compared with those in trammel nets (2000) in the Algarve, southern Portugal areas. In the semi-pelagic longline fi shery, 7 elasmobranch species represented 33.4% (2 185 specimens) of the total fi sh catches. Among the elasmobranch species, the most abundant were Galeus melastomus (63.3%), Etmopterus pusillus (21.7%) and Scyliorhinus canicula (14.2%). Most of these elasmobranchs were discarded (68.3% in total). In the trammel net fi shery, 16 different elasmobranch species represented 4.3% (597 specimens) of total fi sh catches and the most important species were Raja undulata (43.6%) and S. canicula (10.2%). The majority of the elasmobranchs caught in trammel nets had commercial value, and only 5.4% were discarded. In both fi sheries, intra-specifi c catch rates varied with depth. Length-frequency distributions for the only species with relatively high catches in both fi sheries, S. canicula, showed that, in general, trammel nets catch larger specimens and in a narrower length range than do longlines.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Modelling the dissipative effect of fisheries

    When managing marine fish resources in the present context of world generalized exploitation of resources, in which many species are overexploited, management processes have to consider research theoretical results. In this paper, a model is proposed for fisheries in the context of chaos. It is shown how the theory of chaos and a model based on chaos may explain and model the fisheries. This model shows that fisheries may dissipate marine species in certain circumstances. The model permits to show that overfishing may cause a problem of irreversibility in several species recovering, after certain stages for the stocks

    Macrofauna assemblages in a XVIIth century shipwreck: comparison with those on natural reefs and sandy bottoms

    The macrofauna assemblages of a XVIIth century shipwreck off southern Portugal were studied and compared with those of nearby natural reefs and sandy bottoms, by underwater visual census. A total of 11 173 specimens of 224 different fauna taxa and 12 phyla were recorded. Natural reefs had the highest density of specimens (35 122 / 1000 m2) followed by the shipwreck (21 392 / 1000 m2) and the sandy bottoms (3771 / 1000 m2). Three biodiversity indices were estimated (Margalef, Shannon- Wiener and Pielou), with the natural reefs showing the highest values. However, the shipwreck presented values relatively similar to those of the natural reefs for the Shannon-Wiener and Pielou indices. The three habitats were clearly distinguishable by multivariate statistical analysis, with the average dissimilarity between sand and shipwreck, and between sand and natural reefs being much higher than that between the shipwreck and the natural reefs. The shipwreck had higher abundances of some commercially important species, such as the pouting Trisopterus luscus, European conger Conger conger, and common spider crab Maja squinado, as well as some vulnerable and threatened species such as the pink seafan Eunicella verrucosa.     Anti-Commons Theory explains new Property Rights concerns. An “anti-commons” problem arises when there are multiple rights to exclude. Little attention has been given to the setting where more than one person is assigned with exclusion rights, which may be exercised. “Anti-commons” problem is analyzed in situations in which resources are inefficiently under-utilized rather than over-utilized as in the familiar commons setting.
