The Case for CAPSL: Architectural Solutions to Licensing and Distribution in Emerging Music Markets

Compulsory licensing in music has paved the way for a limited class of new noninteractive services. However, innovation and competition are stifled in the field of interactive or otherwise novel services due to high transaction costs inherent in direct licensing. While the creation of a new compulsory license available to a wider array of services may facilitate growth and diversity in new markets, it is unlikely that the legislative process can deliver a new compulsory regime in time to serve relevant interests. Furthermore, the risk exists that legislation written in response to contemporary technology will likely fail to recognize the diversity within the music industry, and therefore will underserve both artists and potential licensees. As such, this brief argues for the creation and adoption of a new standardized protocol for artists and labels to announce the availability of new content with attached standardized licensing terms for automated integration into the catalogs of new or existing digital music services. Such a protocol would allow for automated systems of pricing, distribution, and tracking to reduce transaction costs, increase market transparency, and commodify user participation

Impact of the Slingshot on Bench Press Performance and Shoulder Girdle Muscle Activation

The Sling Shot is an instrument used during the bench press and is thought to improve performance, reduce upper limb pain, and promote proper technique. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of the Sling Shot on upper body muscle activity and one-repetition maximum (1RM) bench press performance. The hypothesis stated that if the Sling Shot decreases shoulder torque, then 1RM bench press performance should increase and upper body muscle activity should decrease while using the Sling Shot. Eight college-aged males participated in this study. Each participant’s 1RM was tested with and without the Sling Shot. Results are currently being analyzed for statistical significance. However, the bench press 1RM did increase an average of 29.38 ± 8.21 lbs while wearing the Sling Shot. Muscle activation of the pectoralis major, anterior deltoid, and triceps brachii was measured using surface electromyography (sEMG) on each participant during the bench press under three conditions; 80% of 1RM without the Sling Shot, 80% of 1RM wearing the Sling Shot, and 80% of Sling Shot 1RM wearing the Sling Shot. A 2-way ANOVA with replication is currently being conducted to assess the impact of the Sling Shot on sEMG results

It employs this concept through the architectural design of a middle school in Baltimore, Maryland that has a focus on music. The existing context of an urban site in the Oldtown area is analyzed to generate a solution to the area’s educational problems as well as to provide an urban renewal plan. La misma realidad de cada lugar es diferente ( The same reality of each place is different ): A case study of an organic farmers market in Lima, Peru

Alternative food movements in North America and Western Europe have proliferated in recent years as producers and consumers attempt to reform what is perceived as a fatally flawed industrial food system. Meanwhile, agricultural producers in the global South are increasingly dispossessed of land and livelihoods as agro-industrial processes take on increasingly global dimensions. Given that many of the challenges facing small-scale producers in the North and South stem from similar patterns of agro-industrialization, might they also share similar responses to these challenges? In this article I make a case for broadening the geographic frame of reference for alternative food systems by comparing farmers\u27 market research from the US with an organic farmers\u27 market in Lima, Peru. Data is drawn from the experiences of agricultural exchange participants, and broadens the field of inquiry into alternative geographies of globalizations (Bebbington 2001). What lessons and insights gained from research into market-based agro-food initiatives in the US could be applied to the movement/market for organic produce in Peru? Homunculi Are People Too! Lewis's Definition of Personhood Debugged

David Lewis defends the following "non-circular definition of personhood": "something is a continuant person if and only if it is a maximal R-interrelated aggregate of person-stages. That is: if and only if it is an aggregate of person-stages, each of which is R-related to all the rest (and to itself), and it is a proper part of no other such aggregate." I give a counterexample, involving a person who is a part of another, much larger person, with a separate mental life. I then offer an easy repair, which preserves the virtues of Lewis's definition without introducing any new vices

Frederick’s “Greatness”

This essay attempts to identify the various qualities that made Frederick II of Prussia’s just appellation ‘the Great’. Frederick employed a completely new type of rule, which was not only unique in the eighteenth century but also prefigured modern governance in many respects. Frederick personified the "raison d’etat" and came to exemplify the rational use of state power for the creation of a completely new standard of judicious kingship. As a visionary ruler of his day, Frederick foreshadowed modern principles of the state. To highlight Frederick’s innovations, the essay not only shows Frederick’s brilliant leadership in the scene of eighteenth-century Europe, but it also refers to rarely quoted contemporary sources; by doing so, the essay contrasts the prodigious divide between the crumbling culture of the "Ancien régime" and that of Frederick’s Prussia—the former still feudal and the latter possessing a vision that rulers are the ‘first servants of the state’

Refinement Types as Higher Order Dependency Pairs

Refinement types are a well-studied manner of performing in-depth analysis on functional programs. The dependency pair method is a very powerful method used to prove termination of rewrite systems; however its extension to higher order rewrite systems is still the object of active research. We observe that a variant of refinement types allow us to express a form of higher-order dependency pair criterion that only uses information at the type level, and we prove the correctness of this criterion

Distillation protocols for Fourier states in quantum computing

Fourier states are multi-qubit registers that facilitate phase rotations in fault-tolerant quantum computing. We propose distillation protocols for constructing the fundamental, $n$-qubit Fourier state with error $O(2^{-n})$ at a cost of $O(n \log n)$ Toffoli gates and Clifford gates, or any arbitrary Fourier state using $O(n^2)$ gates. We analyze these protocols with methods from digital signal processing. These results suggest that phase kickback, which uses Fourier states, could be the current lowest-overhead method for generating arbitrary phase rotations.Comment: 18 pages, 4 figure
