Debussy's string quartet in the Brussels salon of "La Libre Esthetique"
The second performance of Debussy's String Quartet, given by the Ysaye Quartet on an all-Debussy program during the 1894 salon of "La Libre Esthétique" in Brussels, offers an ideal context for a critical reexamination of his musical and aesthetic affinities at this pivotal moment. In the first place, a view to the salon's other three concerts, which honored Beethoven alongside recent works by Societe Nationale composers, encourages reconsideration of Debussy's own response to the "great tradition" in the work he ironically designated "Opus 10." But at the same time, due regard to his other contemporaneous compositional obsessions, as exemplified in the works programmed alongside the Quartet, raises the question as to how such self-conscious dialogue with Classical models related to more pressing, post-Wagnerian musical negotiations. Pursuit of this question through analysis of the first movement's reconfigured sonata form ultimately suggests ways to distinguish, from amid the myriad post-Impressionist artists on view in the "Free Aesthetic" salon itself, those painters whose visual explorations most tellingly paralleled Debussy's own "games" with musical syntax and expression in the early 1890s
Measurement of Synchrotron x-ray energies and line shapes using diffraction markers
Standard reference markers for accurate, reproducible synchrotron x-ray energies are obtained using a three Si crystal spectrometer. The first two crystals are in the monochromator and the third is used to obtain diffraction markers which monitor the energy. Then for any value of the glancing angle on the reference Si crystal the energy for the (333) diffraction must occur at 3/4 that of the (444) and 3/5 of that for the (555). This establishes for the first time an absolute synchrotron energy scale. Higher-order diffractions are used to determine excitation line profiles. We conclude that the use of reference diffractions is necessary to measure reproducible x-ray energies and to analyze the incident photons\u27 line profile. The detection of diffractions near the edge of measurement and near the Cu edge will provide a fast secondary standard which will allow comparison of edge data between different laboratories. The diffraction profiles will allow the proper analysis of spectral line widths
Stamina of a non-gasketed flange joint under combined internal pressure and axial loading
The performance of a bolted flange joint is characterized mainly by its 'strength' and 'sealing capability'. A number of numerical and experimental studies have been conducted to study these characteristics under internal pressure loading conditions alone. However, limited work is found in the literature under conditions of combined internal pressure and axial loading. The effect of external, axial loading pressure being unknown, the optimal performance of the bolted flange joint cannot be achieved. Current design codes do not address the effects of axial loading on structural integrity and sealing ability. To study joint strength and sealing capability under combined loading conditions, an extensive experimental and numerical study of a non-gasketed flange joint was carried out. Actual joint load capacity was determined at both design and test stages with the maximum external axial loading that can be applied for safe joint performance. Experimental and numerical results have been compared and overall joint performance and behaviour is discussed in detail

The Spectral Signature of Dust Scattering and Polarization in the Near IR to Far UV. I. Optical Depth and Geometry Effects
Spectropolarimetry from the near IR to the far UV of light scattered by dust
provides a valuable diagnostic of the dust composition, grain size distribution
and spatial distribution. To facilitate the use of this diagnostic, we present
detailed calculations of the intensity and polarization spectral signature of
light scattered by optically thin and optically thick dust in various
geometries. The polarized light radiative transfer calculations are carried out
using the adding-doubling method for a plane-parallel slab, and are extended to
an optically thick sphere by integrating over its surface. The calculations are
for the Mathis, Rumple & Nordsieck Galactic dust model, and cover the range
from 1 to 500 \AA. We find that the wavelength dependence of the
scattered light intensity provides a sensitive probe of the optical depth of
the scattering medium, while the polarization wavelength dependence provides a
probe of the grain scattering properties, which is practically independent of
optical depth. We provide a detailed set of predictions, including polarization
maps, which can be used to probe the properties of dust through imaging
spectropolarimetry in the near IR to far UV of various Galactic and
extragalactic objects. In a following paper we use the codes developed here to
provide predictions for the dependence of the intensity and polarization on

The Influence of Psycholinguistic Variables on Articulatory Errors in Naming in Progressive Motor Speech Degeneration
We describe an analysis of speech errors on a naming task in a man with progressive speech degeneration. Early assessment indicated naming impairments with no significant phonological or semantic impairment. To examine naming and the factors that influence speech errors, we selected 210 words varying in lexical and phonetic variables and conducted logistic regression analysis on speech error types. No significant naming errors were found. The only significant predictor of articulation errors was phonemic length and the only error type predicted was phone omissions. Results suggest that the sound omissions in naming are caused by motor speech impairment unrelated to lexical factors
Women, know your limits: Cultural sexism in academia
Despite the considerable advances of the feminist movement across Western societies, in Universities women are less likely to be promoted, or paid as much as their male colleagues, or even get jobs in the first place. One way in which we can start to reflect on why this might be the case is through hearing the experiences of women academics themselves. Using feminist methodology, this article attempts to unpack and explore just some examples of
‘cultural sexism’ which characterise the working lives of many women in British academia.This article uses qualitative methods to describe and make sense of just some of those experiences. In so doing, the argument is also made that the activity of academia is profoundly gendered and this explicit acknowledgement may contribute to our
understanding of the under-representation of women in senior positions
Unveiling extremely veiled T Tauri stars
Photospheric absorption lines in classical T Tauri stars (CTTS) are weak
compared to normal stars. This so-called veiling is normally identified with an
excess continuous emission formed in shock-heated gas at the stellar surface
below the accretion streams. We have selected four stars (RW Aur A, RU Lup, S
CrA NW and S CrA SE) with unusually strong veiling to make a detailed
investigation of veiling versus stellar brightness and emission line strengths
for comparisons to standard accretion models. We have monitored the stars
photometrically and spectroscopically at several epochs. In standard accretion
models a variable accretion rate will lead to a variable excess emission.
Consequently, the stellar brightness should vary accordingly. We find that the
veiling of absorption lines in these stars is strongly variable and usually so
large that it would require the release of several stellar luminosities of
potential energy. At states of very large line dilution, the correspondingly
large veiling factors derived correlate only weakly with brightness. Moreover,
the emission line strengths violate the expected trend of veiling versus line
strength. The veiling can change dramatically in one night, and is not
correlated with the phase of the rotation periods found for two stars. We show
that in at least three of the stars, when the veiling becomes high, the
photospheric lines become filled-in by line emission, which produces large
veiling factors unrelated to changes in any continuous emission from shocked
regions. We also consider to what extent extinction by dust and electron
scattering in the accretion stream may affect veiling measures in CTTS. We
conclude that the degree of veiling cannot be used as a measure of accretion
rates in CTTS with rich emission line spectra.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A Letters. New language-edited version.

Improved description of charged Higgs boson production at hadron colliders
We present a new method for matching the two twin-processes gb->H+/-t and
gg->H+/-tb in Monte Carlo event generators. The matching is done by defining a
double-counting term, which is used to generate events that are subtracted from
the sum of these two twin-processes. In this way we get a smooth transition
between the collinear region of phase space, which is best described by
gb->H+/-t, and the hard region, which requires the use of the gg->H+/-tb
process. The resulting differential distributions show large differences
compared to both the gb-> H+/-t and gg->H+/-tb processes illustrating the
necessity to use matching when tagging the accompanying b-jet.Comment: 21 pages, 9 figures. Revised with updated discussion and reference
