Large Angle Satellite Attitude Maneuvers
Two methods are proposed for performing large angle reorientation maneuvers. The first method is based upon Euler's rotation theorem; an arbitrary reorientation is ideally accomplished by rotating the spacecraft about a line which is fixed in both the body and in space. This scheme has been found to be best suited for the case in which the initial and desired attitude states have small angular velocities. The second scheme is more general in that a general class of transition trajectories is introduced which, in principle, allows transfer between arbitrary orientation and angular velocity states. The method generates transition maneuvers in which the uncontrolled (free) initial and final states are matched in orientation and angular velocity. The forced transition trajectory is obtained by using a weighted average of the unforced forward integration of the initial state and the unforced backward integration of the desired state. The current effort is centered around practical validation of this second class of maneuvers. Of particular concern is enforcement of given control system constraints and methods for suboptimization by proper selection of maneuver initiation and termination times. Analogous reorientation strategies which force smooth transition in angular momentum and/or rotational energy are under consideration
Photometry, spectrophotometry and polarimetry of comet P/Encke during fall of 1979
Broadband S-20, B and V magnitudes of P/Encke were obtained with the digital area photometer, using an Image Dissector Scanner (IDS) detector on the 2.7 m telescope at McDonald Observatory during August 1979. The notation V(S-20) is used for S-20 magnitudes transformed to V magnitudes. The variation in the V(S20) magnitudes (26, 5 minute integrations) on the best photometric night (21 August) was small and random indicating either a lack of rotational albedo variations or, more likely, a masking of the nucleus by the outburst activity. A spectrum covering the region from 3630 to 4900 A at a resolution of 5 A was obtained on 27 August with the IDS spectrograph. The spectrum was featureless, showing no emission at the CN or CO+ wavelengths
TOBIAS CENTER FOR LEADERSHIP EXCELLENCE
poster abstractThe Randall L. Tobias Center for Leadership Excellence was established in 2004. The vision is for it to become one of the top 3 or 4 internationally recognized Centers on Leadership Excellence. The Tobias Center is explicitly cross-disciplinary in its study of leadership and was created as a collaboration of the Kelley School of Business, the School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA) and the School of Education and the Center on Philanthropy.
The Tobias Center is an Indiana University center and is housed in the Kelley School in Indianapolis. The programs of the Center fall into three major areas: research, community outreach and education, and teaching.
The poster will highlight each of the Centerâs programs in each of the three areas. For Research, it will describe the Centerâs Faculty Fellows, Doctoral Fellows and Leadership Laboratories. The Centerâs community outreach and education programs include the Hoosier Fellows Program, the three lecture programs, and its annual conference. Teaching initiatives of the Tobias Center include the Urban Leadership Education Institute, the Undergraduate Leadership Academy and School of Medicine Leadership course
Initial investigations into the damping characteristics of wire rope vibration isolators
Passive dampers composed of coils of multi-strand wire rope are investigated. Analytical results range from those produced by complex NASTRAN models to those of a Coulomb damping model with variable friction force. The latter agrees well with experiment. The Coulomb model is also utilized to generate hysteresis loops. Various other models related to early experimental investigations are described. Significant closed-form static solutions for physical properties of single-and multi-strand wire ropes are developed for certain specific geometries and loading conditions. NASTRAN models concentrate on model generation and mode shapes of 2-strand and 7-strand straight wire ropes with interfacial forces
Possible Observational Criteria for Distinguishing Brown Dwarfs from Planets
The difference in formation process between binary stars and planetary
systems is reflected in their composition as well as their orbital
architecture, particularly orbital eccentricity as a function of orbital
period. It is suggested here that this difference can be used as an
observational criterion to distinguish between brown dwarfs and planets.
Application of the orbital criterion suggests that with three possible
exceptions, all of the recently-discovered substellar companions discovered to
date may be brown dwarfs and not planets. These criterion may be used as a
guide for interpretation of the nature of sub-stellar mass companions to stars

MOSAIC: A Scalable reconfigurable 2D array system for NDT
This paper documents the development of a scalable 2D array system, or Mosaic that can be targeted at a wide range of NDT applications by way of a reconfigurable tile that can be tessellated to form arrays of any size and shape. Close coupling permits utilization of excitation voltages as low as +/-3.3V with insertion loss of 48dB on reflection from an aluminum back wall at 73mm achieved using 2D arrays without decoding
Condensed Tannins in Tropical Legumes: Concentration, Astringency and Effects on the Nutrition of Ruminants
A feeding trial was carried out to determine the effect of extractable condensed tannins (ECT) concentration and tannin astringency in tropical legumes on nitrogen (N) digestion by sheep. Test legumes were Desmodium ovalifolium (Do) and Flemingia macrophylla (Fm) which had similar concentrations of Extractable CT (9% DM) but tannins with different degree of astringency (Do, 0.6 and Fm, 0.3 g protein bound/g of ECT). Chopped sun-dried forage of each legume was sprayed with either water (control) or polyethylene glycol (PEG, 3.5% DM) to reduce ECT and fed to 8 sheep with ruminal and duodenal canulas arranged in a replicated 4 x 4 Latin Square changeover design. Greater (P\u3c0.05) N flow to duodenum, and fecal N were observed with Fm than with Do. Estimates of escape N were similar (58 to 61%) for both legumes. Reduction of ECT with PEG in both legumes (9.0-9.4 to 4.7-5.4%) resulted in lower (P\u3c0.05) proportion of N reaching the duodenum. Results indicate that concentration of ECT had a greater effect on N digestion by sheep than tannin astringency
Large excess of heavy nitrogen in both hydrogen cyanide and cyanogen from comet 17P/Holmes
From millimeter and optical observations of the Jupiter-family comet
17P/Holmes performed soon after its huge outburst of October 24, 2007, we
derive 14 N/15N = 139 +/- 26 in HCN, and 14N/15N = 165 +/- 40 in CN,
establishing that HCN has the same non-terrestrial isotopic composition as CN.
The same conclusion is obtained for the long-period comet C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp)
after a reanalysis of previously published measurements. These results are
compatible with HCN being the prime parent of CN in cometary atmospheres. The
15N excess relative to the Earth atmospheric value indicates that N-bearing
volatiles in the solar nebula underwent important N isotopic fractionation at
some stage of Solar System formation. HCN molecules never isotopically
equilibrated with the main nitrogen reservoir in the solar nebula before being
incorporated in Oort-cloud and Kuiper-belt comets. The 12C/13C ratios in HCN

Induced earthquake families reveal distinctive evolutionary patterns near disposal wells
The timing of events in seismic sequences can provide insights into the physical processes controlling fault slip. In southern Kansas, the rate of earthquakes rose rapidly starting in 2013 following expansion of energy production into the area, demanding the disposal of large volumes of wastewater into deep wells. Seismicity catalogs that are complete to low magnitudes can provide insights into the physical processes that induce seismicity near wastewater disposal. We develop a catalog of over 130,000 earthquakes recorded in southern Kansas from midâMarch 2014 through December 2017 by applying a matched filter algorithm to an original catalog of 5,831 template earthquakes. Detections have nearly identical waveforms to their associated template event and represent slip on nearly coâlocated sections of a fault. We select template events with at least 100 associated detections and examine the characteristics of these prolific families of earthquakes. We find that families located close (<10 km) to areas with significant volumes of injected fluids have nearâPoissonian interevent times and the families remain active over longer durations. Families farther from highâvolume injection wells show strong clustering of interevent times and shorter sequence durations. We conclude that increasing pore fluid pressures from nearby disposal of large volumes of wastewater is the primary driver of these long duration episodes, with earthquakeâearthquake interactions driving sequences at greater distance from the wells
Navy composite maintenance and repair experience
The Navy has been a strong proponent of composites for aircraft structure. Fleet use of composites started with the F-14 in the early 1970's and has steadily increased. This experience base provides sufficient information to allow an evaluation of the maintenance performance of polymer composites in service. A summary is presented of the Navy's experience with maintenance of composite structure. The general types of damage experienced in the fleet as well as specific examples of composite damage to aircraft is described. The impact of future designs on supportability is also discussed
