We report low- and high-resolution spectra of comet C/2002 C1 (Ikeya-Zhang) from McDonald Observatory. The comet had a well-developed ion tail including CO+, CO2+, CH+, and H2O+. We used our high-resolution spectra to search for N2+. None was detected and we placed upper limits on N2+/CO+ of 5.4 times 10^{-4}. N2+ was detected in the low-resolution spectra but we show that this emission was probably telluric in origin (if cometary, we derive N2+/CO+ = 5.5 times 10^{-3}, still very low). We discuss the implications for the conditions in the early solar nebula of the non-detection of N2+. These depend on whether the H2O ice was deposited in the amorphous or crystalline form. If H2O was deposited in its crystalline form, the detection of CO+ but not N2+ has implications for H2O/H2 in the early solar nebula.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ (Letters) - 10 Sept 200

The Spatial Distribution Of OH And CN Radicals In The Coma Of Comet Encke

Multiple potential parent species have been proposed to explain CN abundances in comet comae, but the parent has not been definitively identified for all comets. This study examines the spatial distribution of CN radicals in the coma of comet Encke and determines the likelihood that CN is a photodissociative daughter of HCN in the coma. Comet Encke is the shortest orbital period (3.3 years) comet known and also has a low dust-to-gas ratio based on optical observations. Observations of CN were obtained from 2003 October 22 to 24, using the 2.7 m telescope at McDonald Observatory. To determine the parent of CN, the classical vectorial model was modified by using a cone shape in order to reproduce Encke's highly aspherical and asymmetric coma. To test the robustness of the modified model, the spatial distribution of OH was also modeled. This also allowed us to obtain CN/OH ratios in the coma. Overall, we find the CN/OH ratio to be 0.009 +/- 0.004. The results are consistent with HCN being the photodissociative parent of CN, but we cannot completely rule out other possible parents such as CH(3)CN and HC(3)N. We also found that the fan-like feature spans similar to 90 degrees, consistent with the results of Woodney et al..NASAOffice of the Vice President for Research and Economic Development at Mississippi State UniversityMcDonald Observator

The Economic Impact of the Nevada Clean Indoor Air Act in Clark County, Nevada – Preliminary Findings

Objective. The primary purpose of this exploratory study was to quantitatively evaluate the economic impact of the Nevada Clean Indoor Air Act (NCIAA) on businesses in Clark County. Methods. The goal of this research was to assess economic indicators over a ten year period utilizing measurable data points, including restaurant and drinking establishment employment rates, taxable sales, openings and closings, as well as slot gaming revenues. This ten year time period consisted of a seven year span prior to the enactment of the NCIAA, and three years post enactment. Researchers conceived this study as a means to independently evaluate and address the potential economic impact of a smoke-free law in a region dependent upon tourism and gaming. Results. Economic indicators did in fact decrease after the NCIAA was enforced but most of the declining trends began prior to the passage of the smoke-free act and are consistent with downward trends in other, non-NCIAA affected segments of our economy. Conclusion. The overall findings of this study are consistent with similar non-tobacco industry supported economic studies showing little or no statistically significant downward economic trends after passage of smoke-free legislation

Value of some of the glass substitutes in growing chicks

During the last few years considerable interest has been shown in the production of broiler chicks to the age of 10 to 12 weeks. During the late winter and early spring months, difficulties, such as leg weakness have been frequently encountered and remedies, such as cod liver oil, egg yolks, quartz mercury vapor lamp, glass substitutes or direct sunlight have been advocated to provide the antirachitic vitamin, which is necessary to insure success and obtain maximum growth. Variability in potency, supply and cost of cod liver oil and egg yolks have been limiting factors in their use by the practical poultrymen in rearing chicks during late winter and early spring

Exchange stiffness in ultrathin perpendicularly-magnetized CoFeB layers determined using spin wave spectroscopy

We measure the frequencies of spin waves in nm-thick perpendicularly magnetized FeCoB systems, and model the frequencies to deduce the exchange stiffness of this material in the ultrathin limit. For this, we embody the layers in magnetic tunnel junctions patterned into circular nanopillars of diameters ranging from 100 to 300 nm and we use magneto-resistance to determine which rf-current frequencies are efficient in populating the spin wave modes. Micromagnetic calculations indicate that the ultrathin nature of the layer and the large wave vectors used ensure that the spin wave frequencies are predominantly determined by the exchange stiffness, such that the number of modes in a given frequency window can be used to estimate the exchange. For 1 nm layers the experimental data are consistent with an exchange stiffness A= 20 pJ/m, which is slightly lower that its bulk counterpart. The thickness dependence of the exchange stiffness has strong implications for the numerous situations that involve ultrathin films hosting strong magnetization gradients, and the micromagnetic description thereof.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, submitted to PR

Inferring the CO2 Abundance in Comet 45P/Honda-Mrkos-Pajdu\v{s}\'akov\'a from [O I] Observations: Implications for the Source of Icy Grains in Cometary Comae

The study of cometary composition is important for understanding our solar system's early evolutionary processes. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a common hypervolatile in comets that can drive activity but is more difficult to study than other hypervolatiles due to severe telluric absorption. CO2 can only be directly observed from space-borne assets. Therefore, a proxy is needed to measure CO2 abundances in comets using ground-based observations. The flux ratio of the [O I] 5577 A line to the sum of the [O I] 6300 A and [O I] 6364 A lines (hereafter referred to as the [O I] line ratio) has, with some success, been used in the past as such a proxy. We present an [O I] line ratio analysis of comet 45P/Honda-Mrkos-Pajdu\v{s}\'akov\'a (HMP), using data obtained with the Tull Coud\'e Spectrograph on the 2.7-meter Harlan J. Smith telescope at McDonald Observatory, taken from UT February 21-23, 2017 when the comet was at heliocentric distances of 1.12-1.15 AU. HMP is a hyperactive Jupiter family comet (JFC). Icy grains driven out by CO2 sublimation have been proposed as a driver of hyperactivity, but the CO2 abundance of HMP has not been measured. From our [O I] line ratio measurements, we find a CO2/H2O ratio for HMP of 22.9 +/- 1.4%. We compare the CO2/H2O ratios to the active fractions of the nine comets (including HMP) in the literature that have data for both values. We find no correlation. These findings imply that CO2 sublimation driving out icy grains is not the only factor influencing active fractions for cometary nuclei.Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures. Large excess of heavy nitrogen in both hydrogen cyanide and cyanogen from comet 17P/Holmes

From millimeter and optical observations of the Jupiter-family comet 17P/Holmes performed soon after its huge outburst of October 24, 2007, we derive 14 N/15N = 139 +/- 26 in HCN, and 14N/15N = 165 +/- 40 in CN, establishing that HCN has the same non-terrestrial isotopic composition as CN. The same conclusion is obtained for the long-period comet C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp) after a reanalysis of previously published measurements. These results are compatible with HCN being the prime parent of CN in cometary atmospheres. The 15N excess relative to the Earth atmospheric value indicates that N-bearing volatiles in the solar nebula underwent important N isotopic fractionation at some stage of Solar System formation. HCN molecules never isotopically equilibrated with the main nitrogen reservoir in the solar nebula before being incorporated in Oort-cloud and Kuiper-belt comets. The 12C/13C ratios in HCN and CN are measured to be consistent with the terrestrial value.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal (Letters) 4 page

Program boosting: program synthesis via crowd-sourcing

    Get PDF
In this paper, we investigate an approach to program synthesis that is based on crowd-sourcing. With the help of crowd-sourcing, we aim to capture the "wisdom of the crowds" to find good if not perfect solutions to inherently tricky programming tasks, which elude even expert developers and lack an easy-to-formalize specification. We propose an approach we call program boosting, which involves crowd-sourcing imperfect solutions to a difficult programming problem from developers and then blending these programs together in a way that improves their correctness. We implement this approach in a system called CROWDBOOST and show in our experiments that interesting and highly non-trivial tasks such as writing regular expressions for URLs or email addresses can be effectively crowd-sourced. We demonstrate that carefully blending the crowd-sourced results together consistently produces a boost, yielding results that are better than any of the starting programs. Our experiments on 465 program pairs show consistent boosts in accuracy and demonstrate that program boosting can be performed at a relatively modest monetary cost
