The longitudinal study investigates recruitment, retention and career progression in local authority child and family social work over 5 years. This is the first of 5 reports. It provides workforce information for employers and policy makers. Topics covered in this report include: •entry routes into local authority child and family social work •current employment and career history •workplace wellbeing •management, supervision and working environment •job satisfaction •career progression and future career plan

First results from TOO observations of the Aql X-1 field with INTEGRAL

We present results of observations of the Aql X-1 field performed in March-April 2003 with the INTEGRAL observatory. This TOO (Target Of Opportunity) INTEGRAL observations was initiated upon receiving an indication from the ASM/RXTE that the source started an outburst. Thirteen X-ray sources were detected by the INTEGRAL imagers, JEM-X and IBIS, during these observations. We present a preliminary spectral and timing analysis for several bright sources in the field, Aql X-1, X1901+03, 4U1907+097, XTE J1908+094 and X1908+075. We also detected two X-ray bursts from Aql X-1 near the end of the general outburst episode.Comment: 5 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in the A&

Completing the puzzle of the 2004-2005 outburst in V0332+53: the brightening phase included

Analysis of the data obtained with the RXTE observatory during a powerful outburst of the X-ray pulsar V0332+53 in 2004-2005 is presented. Observational data covering the outburst brightening phase are analysed in detail for the first time. A comparison of source parameters and their evolution during the brightening and fading phases shows no evidence for any hysteresis behaviour. It is found that the dependences of the energy of the cyclotron absorption line on the luminosity during the brightening and fading phases are almost identical. The complete data sequence including the outburst brightening and fading phases makes it possible to impose the more stringent constraints on the magnetic field in the source. The pulse profile and pulsed fraction are studied as functions of the luminosity and photon energy.Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

Isometric Representations of Totally Ordered Semigroups

Let S be a subsemigroup of an abelian torsion-free group G. If S is a positive cone of G, then all C*-algebras generated by faithful isometrical non-unitary representations of S are canonically isomorphic. Proved by Murphy, this statement generalized the well-known theorems of Coburn and Douglas. In this note we prove the reverse. If all C*-algebras generated by faithful isometrical non-unitary representations of S are canonically isomorphic, then S is a positive cone of G. Also we consider G = Z\times Z and prove that if S induces total order on G, then there exist at least two unitarily not equivalent irreducible isometrical representation of S. And if the order is lexicographical-product order, then all such representations are unitarily equivalent.Comment: February 21, 2012. Kazan, Russi

Discovery of new quasi-periodic oscillations in the X-ray transient source V~0332+53

We report the discovery of a new quasi-period oscillation (QPO) at 0.22 Hz, centered on the source spin frequency of the high mass X-ray binary system V~0332+53 when the source was observed during its November 2004/March 2005 outburst by {\em RXTE}. Besides this new QPO, we also detected the known 0.05 Hz QPO. Both the 0.22 and 0.05 Hz QPOs stand out clearly at a mid-flux level of the outburst within January 15--19 2005, and later at an even lower flux level as the width of 0.22 Hz QPO drops. No evolution of the centroid frequency with the flux is seen in either QPO. The rms value below 10 keV is around 4--6% for both QPOs and decreases at higher energies. We discuss our results in the context of current QPO models.Comment: 5 figures, 12 pages. AASTex preprint style. (In 2005, ApJ Let., 629, L33

Discovery of a Cyclotron Resonance Scattering Feature in the X-ray Spectrum of XTE J1946+274

Observations of the transient accreting pulsar XTE J1946+274 made with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer during the course of the 1998 September-November outburst, reveal a cyclotron resonance scattering feature (or "cyclotron line") in the hard X-ray spectrum near 35 keV. We determine a centroid energy of 36.2 +0.5/-0.7 keV, which implies a magnetic field strength of 3.1(1+z)x10^12 G, where z is the gravitational redshift of the scattering region. The optical depth, Tau = 0.33 +0.07/-0.06, and width, sigma = 3.37 +0.92/-0.75 keV, are typical of known cyclotron lines in other pulsars. This discovery makes XTE J1946+274 one of thirteen pulsars with securely detected cyclotron lines resulting in direct magnetic field measurements.Comment: Five pages including four postscript figures and two tables. INTEGRAL observations of V0332+53 in outburst

We present the analysis of a 100ksec Integral(3-100kev) observation of the transient X-ray pulsar V0332+53 inoutburst. The source is pulsating at P=4.3751+/-0.0002s with a clear double pulse from 6 kev to 60 kev. The average flux was ~550mCrab between 20 kev and 60 kev. We modeled the broad band continuum from 5 kev to 100 kev with a power-law modified by an exponential cut off. We observe three cyclotron lines: the fundamental line at 24.9+/-0.1 kev, the first harmonic at 50.5+/-0.1 kev as well as the second harmonic at71.7+/-0.8 kev, thus confirming the discovery of the harmonic lines by Coburn et al. (2005) in RXTE data.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures. Accepted for publication in A&A Letter
