    Pollen adaptation to ant pollination – a case study from the Proteaceae

    Background and aims Ant-plant associations are widely diverse and distributed throughout the world, leading to antagonistic and/or mutualistic interactions. Ant pollination is a rare mutualistic association and reports of ants as effective pollinators are limited to a few studies. Conospermum (Proteaceae) is an insect-pollinated genus well represented in the south-western Australia biodiversity hotspot, and here we aimed to evaluate the role of ants as pollinators of C. undulatum. Methods Pollen germination after contact with several species of ants and bees was tested for C. undulatum and five co-flowering species for comparison. We then sampled the pollen load of floral visitors of C. undulatum to assess whether ants carried a pollen load sufficient to enable pollination. Lastly, we performed exclusion treatments to assess the relative effect of flying- and non-flying-invertebrate floral visitors on the reproduction of C. undulatum. For this, we measured the seed set under different conditions: ants exclusion, flying-insects exclusion and control. Key results Pollen of C. undulatum, along with the other Conospermum species, had a germination rate after contact with ants of ~80% which did not differ from the effect of bees; in contrast, the other plant species tested showed a drop in the germination rate to ~10% following ant treatments. Although ants were generalist visitors, they carried a pollen load with 68% to 86% of suitable grains. Moreover, ants significantly contributed to the seed set of C. undulatum. Conclusions Our study highlights the complexity of ant-flower interactions and suggests that generalizations neglecting the importance of ants as pollinators cannot be made. Conospermum undulatum has evolved pollen with resistance to the negative effect of ant secretions on pollen grains, with ants providing effective pollination services to this threatened species

    Precision Nitrogen Management In Camelina: Preliminary Results From A Case Study In Central Italy

    Nowadays, the use of advanced technologies in agriculture is mandatory in order to increase cropping system sustainability and quality. To guarantee a higher yield, farmers need to ensure the best health of their crops with, at the same time, the least environmental impact. Particular attention is generally paid to nitrogen fertilization since nitrogen use efficiency in modern agriculture is very low. It means that a lot of synthetic chemicals are wasted rather than utilized by crops with consequent environmental issues. The use of spectral reflectance indices, such as the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and chlorophyll index (Dualex), are reliable indicators to determine N status of crop plants. In this contest, very scarce knowledge is available about the response of camelina - a promising oilseed crop for food, feed, and the bio-based industry - to different N rates as well as on the use of remote/proximal sensing. So, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of N fertilization rate and timing on camelina seed yield and quality.     Evaluating the effects of short and medium-term temporary work reduction schemes: the case of Spain’s ERTEs during the COVID-19 outbreak

    This paper presents an average treatment effect analysis of the Spain’s furlough program during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, using propensity score matching techniques. Merging 2020 labor force quarterly microdata, we find that the probability to be re-employed after treatment was significantly higher among the treated (furlough granted group) than in the control group (comparable non-furloughed individuals who lost their job). These results seem to be robust across models, having tested a wide range of matching specifications. Furthermore, we also explore if the Spanish furlough scheme had an uniform impact across regions with different industrial structures, concluding that the furlough participation was positively related to the probability of re�employment across any region and economic activity. Nevertheless, a different time arrangement did affect the magnitude of the effect, suggesting that it may decrease with the furlough duration. This finding advises against long lasting schemes under persistent recessions, notwithstanding, short time work schemes still stand as useful strategies to face essentially transitory adverse shocks

    Pediatric Hodgkin Lymphoma: Predictive value of interim 18F-FDG PET/CT in therapy response assessment

    We investigated the prognostic value of interim 18F-FDG PET/CT (PET-2) in pediatric Hodgkin lymphoma (pHL), evaluating both visual and semiquantitative analysis. Thirty pHL patients (age ⠤16) underwent serial 18F-FDG PET/CT: At baseline (PET-0), after 2 cycles of chemotherapy (PET-2) and at the end of first-line chemotherapy (PET-T). PET response assessment was carried out visually according to the Deauville Score (DS), as well as semiquantitatively by using the semiquantitative parameters reduction from PET-0 to PET-2 (ΠΣSUVmax0-2, ΠΣSUVmean0-2). Final clinical response assessment (outcome) at the end of first-line chemotherapy was the criterion standard, considering patients as responders (R) or nonresponders (NR). Disease status was followed identifying patients with absence or relapsed/progression disease (mean follow-up: 24 months, range 3-78). Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), and accuracy of visual and semiquantitative assessment were calculated; furthermore, Fisher exact test was performed to evaluate the association between both visual and semiquantitative assessment and outcome at the end of the first-line chemotherapy. The prognostic capability of PET-2 semiquantitative parameters was calculated by ROC analysis and expressed as area under curve (AUC). Finally, progression-free survival (PFS) was analyzed according to PET-2 results based on the 5-point scale and semiquantitative criteria, using the Kaplan-Meier method. Based on the outcome at the end of first-line chemotherapy, 5 of 30 patients were NR, the remnant 25 of 30 were R. Sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV, and accuracy of visual analysis were 60%,72%,30%,90%,70%; conversely, sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV, and accuracy of semiquantitative assessment were 80%, 92%, 66.7%, 95.8%, 90%. The highest AUC resulted for ΠΣSUVmax0-2 (0.836; cut-off <12.5; sensitivity 80%; specificity 91%). The association between ΠΣSUVmax0-2 and outcome at the end of first-line chemotherapy resulted to have a strong statistical significance (P=0.0026). Both methods demonstrated to influence PFS, even if the semiquantitative assessment allowed a more accurate identification of patients with a high risk of treatment failure (P=0.005). Our preliminary results showed that PET-2 visual assessment, by using Deauville criteria, can be improved by using the semiquantitative analysis. The SUV max reduction (ΠΣSUVmax0-2) evaluation might provide a support for the interpretation of intermediate scores, predicting with good confidence those patients who will have a poor outcome and require alternative therapies

    Systemic amyloidosis due to unknown multiple myeloma in small bowel pseudo-obstruction: case report

    Amyloidosis is a pathologic diagnosis characterized by extracellular deposition of insoluble protein fibrils in various organs and tissues. There are two main forms of amyloidosis, primary amyloidosis, and secondary amyloidosis. Gastrointestinal involvement is common in both amyloidosis forms. We describe the case of a 78-year-old woman taken to the operating room for small bowel obstruction, found to have pseudo-obstruction and enteritis. Exploratory laparotomy revealed gastric mass and histological examen showed extensive amyloid deposition consistent with amyloidosis. Hematological evaluation revealed unknown multiple myeloma. This case report and literature data suggest to perform a hematological examination in patients with amyloidosis diagnosis to exclude a multiple myeloma or other plasma cell disorder

    Hybrid brain/neural interface and autonomous vision-guided whole-arm exoskeleton control to perform activities of daily living (ADLs)

    [EN] Background The aging of the population and the progressive increase of life expectancy in developed countries is leading to a high incidence of age-related cerebrovascular diseases, which affect people's motor and cognitive capabilities and might result in the loss of arm and hand functions. Such conditions have a detrimental impact on people's quality of life. Assistive robots have been developed to help people with motor or cognitive disabilities to perform activities of daily living (ADLs) independently. Most of the robotic systems for assisting on ADLs proposed in the state of the art are mainly external manipulators and exoskeletal devices. The main objective of this study is to compare the performance of an hybrid EEG/EOG interface to perform ADLs when the user is controlling an exoskeleton rather than using an external manipulator. Methods Ten impaired participants (5 males and 5 females, mean age 52 +/- 16 years) were instructed to use both systems to perform a drinking task and a pouring task comprising multiple subtasks. For each device, two modes of operation were studied: synchronous mode (the user received a visual cue indicating the sub-tasks to be performed at each time) and asynchronous mode (the user started and finished each of the sub-tasks independently). Fluent control was assumed when the time for successful initializations ranged below 3 s and a reliable control in case it remained below 5 s. NASA-TLX questionnaire was used to evaluate the task workload. For the trials involving the use of the exoskeleton, a custom Likert-Scale questionnaire was used to evaluate the user's experience in terms of perceived comfort, safety, and reliability. Results All participants were able to control both systems fluently and reliably. However, results suggest better performances of the exoskeleton over the external manipulator (75% successful initializations remain below 3 s in case of the exoskeleton and bellow 5s in case of the external manipulator).     Los Greyhounds tienen valores hematológicos y bioquímicos diferentes a los de perros de otras razas, incluyendo alto hematocrito (HCT), recuento de eritrocitos, concentración de hemoglobina (HGB), aumento de la viscosidad sanguínea y bajo recuento de leucocitos y plaquetas. Estas diferencias se han atribuido a la propia idiosincrasia de la raza, ya que están presentes en individuos normales. El objetivo del estudio era determinar si esta diferencia en los valores hematológicos se presenta en el Galgo español para poder establecer un rango de referencia para esta raza. Evaluamos hemogramas de 35 Galgos Españoles normales utilizando un dispositivo diagnóstico (LaserCyte, IDEXX). El HCT, recuento de eritrocitos, y HGB tendían a ser más altas y el recuento de plaquetas más bajo que los valores de referencia del dispositivo

    Increasing incidence and prevalence of metabolic syndrome in people living with HIV during the COVID-19 pandemic

    IntroductionThe aim of this study was to analyze the impact of COVID-19 pandemic restrictions on the prevalence and incidence of metabolic syndrome (MS), and to identify predictors of new MS cases in people living with HIV (PLWH).MethodsThis cohort study included PLWH followed at the IRCCS San Raffaele, Milan, Italy, with at least one body mass index (BMI) determination during the pre-pandemic period (1 December 2018 to 29 February 2020) and the pandemic period (1 March 2020 to 31 May 2021). MS diagnosis was based on NCEP ATP III 2005 criteria. Univariable Poisson regression model was used to compare MS incidence rates. Univariable mixed linear models estimated the crude mean change in metabolic parameters during each time period. Multivariable Cox proportional hazards model was used to assess risk factors for MS.ResultsThis study included 1,564 PLWH, of whom 460 and 1,104 were with and without a diagnosis of MS, respectively, at the beginning of the pre-pandemic period, with an overall prevalence of MS of 29.4%. During the pre-pandemic period, 528/1,564 PLWH had MS, with a prevalence of 33.8% (95%CI = 31.5%–36.1%), while during the pandemic period, the number of PLWH with a diagnosis of MS increased to 628/1,564, with a prevalence of 40.2% (95%CI 37.8%–42.6%; McNemar’s test: p < 0.0001). Similarly, the MS incidence rate increased from 13.7/100 person-years of follow-up (PYFU; 95%CI = 11.7–16.0) in the pre-pandemic period to 18.5/100 PYFU (95%CI = 16.2–21.1) in the pandemic period (p = 0.004), with 201 subjects developing MS during the pandemic period. In addition, we observed a significant increase in the crude mean change during the pandemic period compared with the pre-pandemic period for: total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, plasma glucose, blood pressure, and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk score. Finally, after adjustment for HIV risk factors, HBV, HCV, ART duration, duration of virologic suppression and use of INSTIs, age [adjusted hazard ratio (AHR) per 3 years older = 1.12 (95%CI = 1.08–1.17)], sex [AHR female vs. male = 0.62 (95%CI = 0.44–0.87)] and CD4+ cell count [AHR per 100 cells/μL higher = 1.05 (95%CI = 1.01–1.09)] were associated with the risk of MS.ConclusionThe COVID-19 pandemic affected the metabolic profile of PLWH and increased the prevalence and incidence of MS
