Label-free oligonucleotide biosensor based on dual-peak long period fiber grating

    Get PDF
We report the simplification and development of biofunctionalization methodology based on one-step 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide (EDC)-mediated reaction. The dual-peak long period grating (dLPG) has been demonstrated its inherent ultrahigh sensitivity to refractive index (RI), achieving 50-fold improvement in RI sensitivity over a standard LPG sensor used in low RI range. With the simple and efficient immobilization of unmodified oligonucleotides on sensor surface, dLPG-based biosensor has been used to monitor the hybridization of complementary oligonucleotides showing a detectable oligonucleotide concentration of 4 nM with the advantages of label-free, real-time, and ultrahigh sensitivity

Dye aggregation and influence of pre-micelles on heterogeneous catalysis: a photophysical approach

Common cationic dyes used for laser and fluorescent probes present low solubility in water. In order to increase the dye concentration in aqueous solutions, anionic surfactant can be added. The strong interaction between anionic surfactant and cationic dye can affect drastically the dye absorption and fluorescence properties. Here we observed that the fluorescence of the species in aqueous solution is maximized at condition of complete micellization of surfactants at critical micelle concentration (CMC). In addition, combined measurements of absorption, emission and fluorescence lifetime provide fundamental information on the critical concentration of H-aggregates formation and monomer separation, induced by pre-micelles and homomicelles on different surfactant sodium dodecylsulphate (SDS) concentration. The experimental results show how to find precisely the critical concentration of H-aggregates by optical method in two different xanthene-derived molecules: rhodamine 6G and rhodamine B. The adequate transference of electron from excited dye to the conduction band of semiconductor (TiO2) promotes the creation of reactive species that provides the degradation of dye with advantage of use of irradiation in the visible region and strong photobleaching with direct exposure to the visible light irradiation in a scale of time of 10 min

Synthesis and two-photon absorption property of novel salen complexes incorporated with two pendant azo dyes

New salen compounds have been developed to possess two pendant azo dye chromophores. The two-photon absorption properties have been observed which result from the chromophores. The additive property has been found to exist as a result of no detrimental dipole–dipole interaction between chromophores.NASA (NCC3-552)NSF (# HRD-0630456)FAPES

Ultrafast dynamics of bis (n-butylimido) perylene thin films excited by two-photon absorption

We report a pump-probe study of the two-photon induced reflectivity changes in bis (n-butylimido) perylene thin films. To enhance the two-photon excitation we deposited bis (n-butylimido) perylene films on top of gold nanoislands. The observed transient response in the reflectivity spectrum of bis (n-butylimido) perylene is due to a depletion of the molecule’s ground state and excited state absorption.National Science Foundation (DMI-0334984)Army Research Office (W911NF-05-1-0471)FAPESPCAPES

Oxazole Dyes With Potential For Photoluminescence Bioprobes: A Two-Photon Absorption Study

    Get PDF
In this work, six π-conjugated oxazole compounds dissolved in dichloromethane were characterized with linear and nonlinear optical measurements. Z-scan with femtosecond laser pulses was employed to determine the two-photon absorption (TPA) spectra. Other photophysical parameters, such as absorbance, solvatochromism, lifetime fluorescence, and fluorescence anisotropy, were evaluated with linear optical techniques. The experimental TPA cross section spectra were adjusted by the sum-over-states (SOS) model, by which important parameters such as transition dipole moments and broadening parameters were determined. To better understand the TPA spectra of the oxazole compounds, quantum-chemical calculations using the response function formalism and the density functional theory level of theory were performed. Using the results provided by the quantum-chemical calculations and the broadening parameters estimated through the application of the SOS model, the TPA spectra were simulated by the superposition (summation) of individual homogeneous Lorentzian absorption profiles

Ultrafast third-order optical nonlinearities of heavy metal oxide glasses containing gold nanoparticles

This work reports on the third-order nonlinear properties and the response time of GeO2-Bi2O3 glass, as well as the effect of gold nanoparticles on these properties. The nonlinear refractive index spectrum and the nonlinear absorption coefficient were determined by the Z-scan technique, and the response time was obtained through Kerr gate measurements, using femtosecond pulses. The results show that the presence of gold nanoparticles causes a saturable absorption effect that is overcome by the two-photon absorption process at higher light intensities, for wavelengths within the plasmon band. We measured a constant value for the nonlinear refractive index (n2) for the visible and infrared regions, which was not affected by the presence of gold nanoparticles in the sample. However, the n2 value is one order of magnitude higher than the one for fused silica and 1.5 times better than PGO (PbO-GeO2) glasses. In addition, the response time of the induced birefringence for the samples with and without gold nanoparticles is faster than the pulse duration (220 fs), indicating an ultra-fast electronic process.FAPESPCNPqCAPESINCT INF

Mode cleaning in graphene oxide-doped polymeric whispering gallery mode microresonators

The strategy to incorporate graphene oxide (GO) in a composite material offers significant opportunities to realize compact photonic devices, such as saturable absorbers and polarization selective devices. However, the processing of GO-based composites by direct laser writing, which would afford vast patterning and material flexibility in a single step process, has been little addressed. In this work, we investigated the mechanisms underlying a mode cleaning effect in polymeric whispering gallery mode microresonators containing GO, aiming at the development of on-chip integrable photonic devices. We fabricated the microresonators (cavity loaded Q-factor of 20 000 at 1550 nm) in a single step of femtosecond laser writing via two-photon polymerization. By calculating the resonance response to damping mechanisms in the microresonators, we showed that additional losses introduced by GO play a major role in reducing the visibility of a number of resonances up to the point of effectively filtering a set of modes out. Interestingly, although the presence of GO leads to extra losses in the microresonator, it does not change the order of magnitude of the Q-factor of the highest extinction ratio resonances. Overall, this work offers interesting physical insights that can be useful for the design and fabrication of GO-based photonic micro/nanodevices.PIRSES-GA-2013- 612267FAPESP 2018/ 11283-7FAPESP 2015/22392-3CAPES 88882.328716/2018-0
