    Origin of Interface Limitation in Zn(O,S)/CuInS2‑Based Solar Cells

    Copper indium disulfide CuInS2 grown under Cu rich conditions exhibits high optical quality but suffers predominantly from charge carrier interface recombination, resulting in poor solar cell performance. An unfavorable cliff like conduction band alignment at the buffer CuInS2 interface could be a possible cause of enhanced interface recombination in the device. In this work, we exploit direct and inverse photoelectron spectroscopy together with electrical characterization to investigate the cause of interface recombination in chemical bath deposited Zn O,S co evaporated CuInS2 based devices. Temperature dependent current voltage analyses indeed reveal an activation energy of the dominant charge carrier recombination path, considerably smaller than the absorber bulk band gap, confirming the dominant recombination channel to be present at the Zn O,S CuInS2 interface. However, photoelectron spectroscopy measurements indicate a small 0.1 eV spike like conduction band offset at the Zn O,S CuInS2 interface, excluding an unfavorable energy level alignment to be the prominent cause for strong interface recombination. The observed band bending upon interface formation also suggests Fermi level pinning not to be the main reason, leaving near interface defects as recently observed in Cu rich CuInSe2 as the likely reason for the performance limiting interface recombinatio

    The relation between religiosity and well-being is one of the most researched topics in the psychology of religion, yet the directionality and robustness of the effect remains debated. Here, we adopted a many-analysts approach to assess the robustness of this relation based on a new cross-cultural dataset (N=10,535 participants from 24 countries). We recruited 120 analysis teams to investigate (1) whether religious people self-report higher well-being, and (2) whether the relation between religiosity and self-reported well-being depends on perceived cultural norms of religion (i.e., whether it is considered normal and desirable to be religious in a given country). In a two-stage procedure, the teams first created an analysis plan and then executed their planned analysis on the data. For the first research question, all but 3 teams reported positive effect sizes with credible/confidence intervals excluding zero (median reported β=0.120). For the second research question, this was the case for 65% of the teams (median reported β=0.039). While most teams applied (multilevel) linear regression models, there was considerable variability in the choice of items used to construct the independent variables, the dependent variable, and the included covariates

    Discutindo a educação ambiental no cotidiano escolar: desenvolvimento de projetos na escola formação inicial e continuada de professores

    A presente pesquisa buscou discutir como a Educação Ambiental (EA) vem sendo trabalhada, no Ensino Fundamental e como os docentes desta escola compreendem e vem inserindo a EA no cotidiano escolar., em uma escola estadual do município de Tangará da Serra/MT, Brasil. Para tanto, realizou-se entrevistas com os professores que fazem parte de um projeto interdisciplinar de EA na escola pesquisada. Verificou-se que o projeto da escola não vem conseguindo alcançar os objetivos propostos por: desconhecimento do mesmo, pelos professores; formação deficiente dos professores, não entendimento da EA como processo de ensino-aprendizagem, falta de recursos didáticos, planejamento inadequado das atividades. A partir dessa constatação, procurou-se debater a impossibilidade de tratar do tema fora do trabalho interdisciplinar, bem como, e principalmente, a importância de um estudo mais aprofundado de EA, vinculando teoria e prática, tanto na formação docente, como em projetos escolares, a fim de fugir do tradicional vínculo “EA e ecologia, lixo e horta”.Facultad de Humanidades y Ciencias de la Educació

    Primary human colonic epithelial cells are transiently protected from anoikis by a Src-dependent mechanism

    Complete loss of cell anchorage triggers apoptosis in primary human colonic epithelial cells (CEC), a phenomenon known as anoikis. Besides the induction of pro-apoptotic events, activation of survival pathways was observed in detached intestinal epithelial cell lines, providing a transient apoptosis protection. However, nothing is known about molecular mechanisms protecting primary CEC from anoikis. In this study intact CEC crypts were isolated and kept in suspension, a condition which leads to the loss of cell-cell anchorage and induces anoikis. To reconstitute cell-cell contacts, cells were centrifuged to form cell aggregates. Induction of apoptosis was assessed by caspase-3 activity assay; activation of survival pathways was analyzed by Western blot. Immediately after loss of cell anchorage a rapid activation of survival proteins was observed before active caspase-3 could be detected. Src hyperactivation significantly contributed to transient protection from anoikis in CEC because its inhibition reversed the protecting effect of re-establishment of cell contacts. Basal levels of active Src in CEC from patients with inflammatory bowel disease were markedly reduced compared to control patients. These results demonstrate that loss of cell anchorage activates survival pathways in primary human CEC providing transient anoikis protection. Src is an important mediator of this mechanism and therefore constitutes a key regulatory molecule coordinating survival signals mediated by cell adhesion in primary human CEC

    Chromophore-protein coupling beyond nonpolarizable models: understanding absorption in green fluorescent protein

    The nature of the coupling of the photoexcited chromophore with the environment in a prototypical system like green fluorescent protein (GFP) is to date not understood, and its description still defies state-of-the-art multiscale approaches. To identify which theoretical framework of the chromophore–protein complex can realistically capture its essence, we employ here a variety of electronic-structure methods, namely, time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT), multireference perturbation theory (NEVPT2 and CASPT2), and quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) in combination with static point charges (QM/MM), DFT embedding (QM/DFT), and classical polarizable embedding through induced dipoles (QM/MMpol). Since structural modifications can significantly affect the photophysics of GFP, we also account for thermal fluctuations through extensive molecular dynamics simulations. We find that a treatment of the protein through static point charges leads to significantly blue-shifted excitation energies and that including thermal fluctuations does not cure the coarseness of the MM description. While TDDFT calculations on large cluster models indicate the need of a responsive protein, this response is not simply electrostatic: An improved description of the protein in the ground state or in response to the excitation of the chromophore via ground-state or state-specific DFT and MMpol embedding does not significantly modify the results obtained with static point charges. Through the use of QM/MMpol in a linear response formulation, a different picture in fact emerges in which the main environment response to the chromophore excitation is the one coupling the transition density and the corresponding induced dipoles. Such interaction leads to significant red-shifts and a satisfactory agreement with full QM cluster calculations at the same level of theory. Our findings demonstrate that, ultimately, faithfully capturing the effects of the environment in GFP requires a quantum treatment of large photoexcited regions but that a QM/classical model can be a useful approximation when extended beyond the electrostatic-only formulation
