The ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on perceived physical activity, physical function and mood of older adults in the U.K:A follow-up study (March 2020-June 2021)
Coronavirus (COVID-19) and its variants, continue to spread globally more than two years after the discovery of
the wild-type virus in Wuhan, China. Following the onset of COVID-19, fluctuating restrictions have likely
impacted the daily lives of older adults living in the United Kingdom (UK). Subsequently, the longer term effects
of COVID-19 on physical activity levels, perceived physical function and mood of older adults are unclear.
Therefore, the present study aimed to follow a group of older adult's living in the UK for one year, to monitor
physical activity levels, perceived physical function and mood. A longitudinal, mixed-methods, observational
study was conducted using self-administered, online surveys at 3-month intervals between March 2020 and June
2021. A total of 100 participants (46 males [age: 76 ± 5 years] and 54 females [age:74 ± 4 years]) completed all
surveys. Bayesian analysis allowed calculation of direct probabilities whilst incorporating our prior knowledge.
Throughout this period, older adults maintained or increased their pre-lockdown physical activity levels despite
a decrease in intensity of effort of physical activity tasks, whilst sitting time increased at two of the follow-up
time-points. Furthermore, perceived physical function decreased (ps = 91.78%;>1.21 AU) and mood undu�lated in a pattern that reflected the tightening and easing of restrictions. Despite total physical activity being
maintained, perceived physical function decreased by a small but clinically meaningful margin
Changing Concepts of the Cause of Diabetes Mellitus
Probably the first allusion to diabetes is contained in the papyrus Ebers, dated at about 1500 B .C . and the symptomatology of the disorder was described by Aretaeus in the 1st century A.D. Prior to the late 17th century the causation of diabetes was variously ascribed to excessive food, alcohol, sex or grief or to maladies of the stomach, arteries, blood, nervous and other systems. However, in 1683 the Swiss Brunner recorded that pancreatectomised dogs displayed great thirst and polyuria before dying in coma, and in 1788 Cawley reported destruction of the pancreatic tissue in a patient dying of diabetes. These observations were largely disregarded until further evidence of a possible relationship between diabetes and the pancreas was provided by the classical experiments of von Mering and Minkowski in 1890. Twenty years earlier Langerhans, when aged 20, had described the islets to which his name was given in 1893 by Laguesse who was the first to suggest that they might produce an internal secretion. Schafer in 1895 considered that this secretion might profoundly modify the carbohydrate metabolism of the tissues and the name “ insuline” was proposed by de Meyer in 1909
The effect of exercise intensity on cognitive performance during short duration treadmill running
This study examined the effect of short duration, moderate and high-intensity exercise on a Go/NoGo task. Fifteen, habitually active (9 females and 6 males aged 28 ± 5 years) agreed to participate in the study and cognitive performance was measured in three sessions lasting 10 min each, performed at three different exercise intensities: rest, moderate and high. Results indicated significant exercise intensity main effects for reaction time (RT) (p = 0.01), the omission error rate (p = 0.027) and the decision error rate (p = 0.011), with significantly longer RTs during high intensity exercise compared to moderate intensity exercise (p = 0.039) and rest (p = 0.023). Mean ± SE of RT (ms) was 395.8 ± 9.1, 396.3 ± 9.1 and 433.5 ± 16.1 for rest, moderate and high intensity exercise, respectively. This pattern was replicated for the error rate with a significantly higher omission error and decision error rate during high intensity exercise compared to moderate intensity exercise (p = 0.003) and rest (p = 0.001). Mean ± SE of omission errors (%) was 0.88 ± 0.23, 0.8 ± 0.23 and 1.8 ± 0.46% for rest, moderate and high intensity exercise, respectively. Likewise, mean ± SE of decision errors (%) was 0.73 ± 0.24, 0.73 ± 0.21 and 1.8 ± 0.31 for rest, moderate and high intensity exercise, respectively. The present study’s results suggest that 10 min workout at high intensity impairs RT performances in habitually active adults compared to rest or moderate intensity exercise
Method of forming electronically conducting polymers on conducting and nonconducting substrates
The present invention provides electronically conducting polymer films formed from photosensitive formulations of pyrrole and an electron acceptor that have been selectively exposed to UV light, laser light, or electron beams. The formulations may include photoinitiators, flexibilizers, solvents and the like. These solutions can be used in applications including printed circuit boards and through-hole plating and enable direct metallization processes on non-conducting substrates. After forming the conductive polymer patterns, a printed wiring board can be formed by sensitizing the polymer with palladium and electrolytically depositing copper
The detection of cluster magnetic fields via radio source depolarisation
It has been well established that galaxy clusters have magnetic fields. The
exact properties and origin of these magnetic fields are still uncertain even
though these fields play a key role in many astrophysical processes. Various
attempts have been made to derive the magnetic field strength and structure of
nearby galaxy clusters using Faraday rotation of extended cluster radio
sources. This approach needs to make various assumptions that could be
circumvented when using background radio sources. However, because the number
of polarised radio sources behind clusters is low, at the moment such a study
can only be done statistically. In this paper, we investigate the
depolarisation of radio sources inside and behind clusters in a sample of 124
massive clusters at observed with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array.
We detect a clear depolarisation trend with the cluster impact parameter, with
sources at smaller projected distances to the cluster centre showing more
depolarisation. By combining the radio observations with ancillary X-ray data
from Chandra, we compare the observed depolarisation with expectations from
cluster magnetic field models using individual cluster density profiles. The
best-fitting models have a central magnetic field strength of G with
power-law indices between and . We find no strong difference in the
depolarisation trend between sources embedded in clusters and background
sources located at similar projected radii, although the central region of
clusters is still poorly probed by background sources. We also examine the
depolarisation trend as a function of cluster properties such as the dynamical
state, mass, and redshift. Our findings show that the statistical
depolarisation of radio sources is a good probe of cluster magnetic field

Genetic testing of children for adult-onset conditions: opinions of the British adult population and implications for clinical practice
This study set out to explore the attitudes of a representative sample of the British public towards genetic testing in children to predict disease in the future. We sought opinions about genetic testing for adult-onset conditions for which no prevention/treatment is available during childhood, and about genetic 'carrier' status to assess future reproductive risks. The study also examined participants' level of agreement with the reasons professional organisations give in favour of deferring such testing. Participants (n=2998) completed a specially designed questionnaire, distributed by email. Nearly half of the sample (47%) agreed that parents should be able to test their child for adult-onset conditions, even if there is no treatment or prevention at time of testing. This runs contrary to professional guidance about genetic testing in children. Testing for carrier status was supported by a larger proportion (60%). Evidence for a lineage of virulent bacteriophages that target Campylobacter.
BACKGROUND: Our understanding of the dynamics of genome stability versus gene flux within bacteriophage lineages is limited. Recently, there has been a renewed interest in the use of bacteriophages as 'therapeutic' agents; a prerequisite for their use in such therapies is a thorough understanding of their genetic complement, genome stability and their ecology to avoid the dissemination or mobilisation of phage or bacterial virulence and toxin genes. Campylobacter, a food-borne pathogen, is one of the organisms for which the use of bacteriophage is being considered to reduce human exposure to this organism. RESULTS: Sequencing and genome analysis was performed for two Campylobacter bacteriophages. The genomes were extremely similar at the nucleotide level (> or = 96%) with most differences accounted for by novel insertion sequences, DNA methylases and an approximately 10 kb contiguous region of metabolic genes that were dissimilar at the sequence level but similar in gene function between the two phages. Both bacteriophages contained a large number of radical S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) genes, presumably involved in boosting host metabolism during infection, as well as evidence that many genes had been acquired from a wide range of bacterial species. Further bacteriophages, from the UK Campylobacter typing set, were screened for the presence of bacteriophage structural genes, DNA methylases, mobile genetic elements and regulatory genes identified from the genome sequences. The results indicate that many of these bacteriophages are related, with 10 out of 15 showing some relationship to the sequenced genomes. CONCLUSIONS: Two large virulent Campylobacter bacteriophages were found to show very high levels of sequence conservation despite separation in time and place of isolation. The bacteriophages show adaptations to their host and possess genes that may enhance Campylobacter metabolism, potentially advantaging both the bacteriophage and its host. Genetic conservation has been shown to extend to other Campylobacter bacteriophages, forming a highly conserved lineage of bacteriophages that predate upon campylobacters and indicating that highly adapted bacteriophage genomes can be stable over prolonged periods of time
Politicizing food security governance through participation: opportunities and opposition
Since the 2007/08 food price crisis there has been a proliferation of multi-stakeholder processes (MSPs) devoted to bringing diverse perspectives together to inform and improve food security policy. While much of the literature highlights the positive contributions to be gained from an opening-up of traditionally state-led processes, there is a strong critique emerging to show that, in many instances, MSPs have de-politicizing effects. In this paper, we scrutinize MSPs in relation to de-politicization. We argue that re-building sustainable and just food systems requires alternative visions that can best be made visible through politicized policy processes. Focusing on three key conditions of politicization, we examine the UN Committee on World Food Security as a MSP where we see a process of politicization playing out through the endorsement of the ‘most-affected’ principle, which is in turn being actively contested by traditionally powerful actors. We conclude that there is a need to implement and reinforce mechanisms that deliberately politicize participation in MSPs, notably by clearly distinguishing between states and other stakeholders, as well as between categories of non-state actors.</p
