    A Compiler Project for Translating a C Subset to SPARC Assembly Language

    We present a complete description of a project for a compiler that translates a subset of the C programming language to SPARC assembler language. The project is suitable for a one semester undergraduate course on compilers and interpreters based on the text of Aho, Sethi, and Ullman, and has been used successfully in that context at the University of Pennsylvania. Output that facilitate scoring, and checkpoints for monitoring the students\u27 progress are integral to the project description

    Li abundance/surface activity connections in solar-type Pleiades

    The relation between the lithium abundance, <i>A<sub>Li</sub></i>, and photospheric activity of solar-type Pleiads is investigated for the first time via acquisition and analysis of B and V-band data. Predictions of activity levels of target stars were made according to the <i>A<sub>Li</sub></i>/ (B-V) relation and then compared with new CCD photometric measurements. Six sources behaved according to the predictions while one star (HII 676), with low predicted activity, exhibited the largest variability of the study; another star (HII 3197), with high predicted activity, was surprisingly quiet. Two stars displayed non-periodic fadings, this being symptomatic of orbiting disk-like structures with irregular density distributions. Although the observation windows were not ideal for rotational period detection, some periodograms provided possible values; the light-curve obtained for HII 1532 is consistent with that previously recorded

    The impact of a school-based gardening intervention on intentions and behaviour related to fruit and vegetable consumption in children

    A total of 77 children (34 boys, 43 girls, mean age ± standard deviation = 9 ± 1 years) participated in this study; 46 children (intervention) undertook a 12-week school gardening programme and 31 children acted as controls. Measures of the Theory of Planned Behaviour and fruit and vegetable consumption were taken pre- and post-intervention. Repeated measures analysis of variance and hierarchical regression analysis indicated that the intervention group increased daily consumption of fruits and vegetables and increased intentions, attitudes, norms, and perceived behavioural control related to fruit and vegetable consumption.     Objectives: To investigate impairments in sensory function in chronic non-specific low back pain patients and the relationship between any impairment and the clinical features of the condition. Design: A cross-sectional case-control study. Setting: Laboratory based study. Participants: Nineteen chronic non-specific low back pain patients and nineteen healthy controls. Main Outcome measures: Tactile threshold, two point discrimination distance and accuracy at a task involving recognizing letters drawn over the skin of the lower back (graphaesthesia) were assessed over the lumbar spine in both groups. Pain duration, pain intensity, physical function, anxiety and depression were assessed by questionnaire in the back pain group Results: We found no difference in tactile threshold between the two groups (median difference 0.00 95% CI -0.04 – 0.04). There was a significant difference between controls and back pain patients for two point discrimination (mean difference 17.85 95% CI 5.93 – 29.77) and graphaesthesia accuracy (mean difference 6.13 95% CI 1.27-10.99). Low back pain patients had a larger lumbar two point discrimination distance threshold and a greater letter recognition error rate. In the patient group, we found no relationship between clinical profile and sensory function and no relationship between the sensory tests. Conclusions: These data support existing findings of perceptual abnormalities in chronic non-specific low back pain patients and are suggestive of cortical rather than peripheral sensory dysfunction. Amelioration of these abnormalities may present a target for therapeutic intervention

    Systematic Investigation of the Permeability of Androgen Receptor PROTACs.

    Bifunctional molecules known as PROTACs simultaneously bind an E3 ligase and a protein of interest to direct ubiquitination and clearance of that protein, and they have emerged in the past decade as an exciting new paradigm in drug discovery. In order to investigate the permeability and properties of these large molecules, we synthesized two panels of PROTAC molecules, constructed from a range of protein-target ligands, linkers, and E3 ligase ligands. The androgen receptor, which is a well-studied protein in the PROTAC field was used as a model system.     Experimental measurement and prediction of ionic liquid ionisation energies

    Ionic liquid (IL) valence electronic structure provides key descriptors for understanding and predicting IL properties. The ionisation energies of 60 ILs are measured and the most readily ionised valence state of each IL (the highest occupied molecular orbital, HOMO) is identified using a combination of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and synchrotron resonant XPS. A structurally diverse range of cations and anions were studied. The cation gave rise to the HOMO for nine of the 60 ILs presented here, meaning it is energetically more favourable to remove an electron from the cation than the anion. The influence of the cation on the anion electronic structure (and vice versa) were established; the electrostatic effects are well understood and demonstrated to be consistently predictable. We used this knowledge to make predictions of both ionisation energy and HOMO identity for a further 516 ILs, providing a very valuable dataset for benchmarking electronic structure calculations and enabling the development of models linking experimental valence electronic structure descriptors to other IL properties, e.g. electrochemical stability.     The detection of cluster magnetic fields via radio source depolarisation

    It has been well established that galaxy clusters have magnetic fields. The exact properties and origin of these magnetic fields are still uncertain even though these fields play a key role in many astrophysical processes. Various attempts have been made to derive the magnetic field strength and structure of nearby galaxy clusters using Faraday rotation of extended cluster radio sources. This approach needs to make various assumptions that could be circumvented when using background radio sources. However, because the number of polarised radio sources behind clusters is low, at the moment such a study can only be done statistically. In this paper, we investigate the depolarisation of radio sources inside and behind clusters in a sample of 124 massive clusters at z<0.35z<0.35 observed with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array. We detect a clear depolarisation trend with the cluster impact parameter, with sources at smaller projected distances to the cluster centre showing more depolarisation. By combining the radio observations with ancillary X-ray data from Chandra, we compare the observed depolarisation with expectations from cluster magnetic field models using individual cluster density profiles. The best-fitting models have a central magnetic field strength of 5−10 μ5-10\,\muG with power-law indices between n=1n=1 and n=4n=4. We find no strong difference in the depolarisation trend between sources embedded in clusters and background sources located at similar projected radii, although the central region of clusters is still poorly probed by background sources. We also examine the depolarisation trend as a function of cluster properties such as the dynamical state, mass, and redshift. Our findings show that the statistical depolarisation of radio sources is a good probe of cluster magnetic field parameters.     Symplectic integrators with adaptive time steps

    In recent decades, there have been many attempts to construct symplectic integrators with variable time steps, with rather disappointing results. In this paper we identify the causes for this lack of performance, and find that they fall into two categories. In the first, the time step is considered a function of time alone, \Delta=\Delta(t). In this case, backwards error analysis shows that while the algorithms remain symplectic, parametric instabilities arise because of resonance between oscillations of \Delta(t) and the orbital motion. In the second category the time step is a function of phase space variables \Delta=\Delta(q,p). In this case, the system of equations to be solved is analyzed by introducing a new time variable \tau with dt=\Delta(q,p) d\tau. The transformed equations are no longer in Hamiltonian form, and thus are not guaranteed to be stable even when integrated using a method which is symplectic for constant \Delta. We analyze two methods for integrating the transformed equations which do, however, preserve the structure of the original equations. The first is an extended phase space method, which has been successfully used in previous studies of adaptive time step symplectic integrators. The second, novel, method is based on a non-canonical mixed-variable generating function. Numerical trials for both of these methods show good results, without parametric instabilities or spurious growth or damping. It is then shown how to adapt the time step to an error estimate found by backward error analysis, in order to optimize the time-stepping scheme.     Understanding The Impact of Solver Choice in Model-Based Test Generation

    Background: In model-based test generation, SMT solvers explore the state-space of the model in search of violations of specified properties. If the solver finds that a predicate can be violated, it produces a partial test specification demonstrating the violation.Aims: The choice of solvers is important, as each may produce differing counterexamples. We aim to understand how solver choice impacts the effectiveness of generated test suites at finding faults.Method: We have performed experiments examining the impact of solver choice across multiple dimensions, examining the ability to attain goal satisfaction and fault detection when satisfaction is achieved---varying the source of test goals, data types of model input, and test oracle.Results: The results of our experiment show that solvers vary in their ability to produce counterexamples, and---for models where all solvers achieve goal satisfaction---in the resulting fault detection of the generated test suites. The choice of solver has an impact on the resulting test suite, regardless of the oracle, model structure, or source of testing goals.Conclusions: The results of this study identify factors that impact fault-detection effectiveness, and advice that could improve future approaches to model-based test generation

    Politicizing food security governance through participation: opportunities and opposition

    Since the 2007/08 food price crisis there has been a proliferation of multi-stakeholder processes (MSPs) devoted to bringing diverse perspectives together to inform and improve food security policy. While much of the literature highlights the positive contributions to be gained from an opening-up of traditionally state-led processes, there is a strong critique emerging to show that, in many instances, MSPs have de-politicizing effects. In this paper, we scrutinize MSPs in relation to de-politicization. We argue that re-building sustainable and just food systems requires alternative visions that can best be made visible through politicized policy processes. Focusing on three key conditions of politicization, we examine the UN Committee on World Food Security as a MSP where we see a process of politicization playing out through the endorsement of the ‘most-affected’ principle, which is in turn being actively contested by traditionally powerful actors. We conclude that there is a need to implement and reinforce mechanisms that deliberately politicize participation in MSPs, notably by clearly distinguishing between states and other stakeholders, as well as between categories of non-state actors.</p
