Robert J. Lefkowitz and Discovery of the G-Protein-Coupled Receptor Family

    Get PDF
This poster for the Natural Sciences Poster Session at Parkland College features Dr. Robert J. Lefkowitz, 2012 Nobel Prize in Chemistry winner (with Brian Kobilka) for their research on G-protein-coupled receptors, proteins in the plasma membrane that allow for the transmission of information through the membrane and into the cell. This research was to impact the development of medications that target these receptors, such as SSRIs

A history of the Chesapeake Bay ferries to Virginia\u27s Eastern shore prior to the Civil War

The decision of the Pennsylvania Railroad Authorities to abandon the ferry service of the Elisha Lee, prior to the boats annual inspection by the United States Coast Guard in March, 1953, created a bit of excitement on the part of the Eastern Shore Inhabitants. This ferry service connected the Shore with Old Point Comfort and Norfolk, Virginia. The ferry made two trips a day across the Bay, carrying the mail, freight, cars, and passengers

Influence of short-term endurance exercise training on heart rate variability

The purpose of this investigation was to determine if 8 exercise endurance training (ET) sessions over 2 weeks significantly alters cardiac autonomic modulation, as measured by heart rate variability (HRV). Twenty-four college-aged males were recruited for this study and were randomized into either an exercise group (EX; n=12) or a control group (CT; n=12). EX underwent 2 weeks of ET on a cycle-ergometer (frequency: four times/week; duration: 40 minutes; intensity 80-85% HRreserve), whereas CT was instructed not to alter their previous level of physical activity. Five-minute ECG tracings were collected for HRV under the following conditions: 5 minutes of paced breathing at a frequency of 12 breaths/minute (PB), 5 minutes of spontaneous breathing (SB1), 5 minutes of 70-degree head-up tilt on a tilt table (TILT), and a second 5-minute period of spontaneous breathing (SB2). The data were collected on 5 occasions (Test 1-Test 5) during a 2-week period. HRV was reported as the standard deviation of RR intervals, and as normalized units (NU) of the natural logarithm of high- and low-frequency power (lnHF and lnLF). A mixed-model analysis of variance (ANOVA) with repeated measures was used to evaluate any Group X Time interaction, or main effects of Group or Time on HRV. Alpha was set at 0.05. EX exhibited a significant increase in peak oxygen consumption (8%), whereas this parameter was unchanged in CT. During PB, ANOVA revealed a Group X Time interaction such that EX exhibited decreases in lnLFNU (2.89 vs. 3.45 ln%) and lnLF/lnHF (0.82 vs. 0.90) during Test 5 compared to Test 1, while there were no such differences across time in CT. Additionally, there was a Group X Time interaction during TILT such that EX exhibited lower lnLFNU (4.12 vs. 4.42 ln%) and lnLF/lnHF (1.12 vs. 1.46), and greater lnHFNU (3.52 vs. 2.53 ln%) during Test 5 compared to Test 1, while these indices were unchanged across time in CT. These data suggest that 8 ET sessions over 2 weeks increases vagal modulation of the heart. Furthermore, these data suggest that it takes at least 8 ET sessions to induce such changes

On the Frontlines of Todays Cities: Trauma, Challenges and Solutions

    Get PDF
Local officials work at the level of government closest to the people, and with that comes great responsibility and great challenge. While public officials at the state and federal level have faced harassment and threats for decades, this trend has now made its way to cities, with local leaders on the frontlines of these challenges. Driven by increasing polarization, the spread of mis- and disinformation and the growing influence and power of social media, local officials face everything from racist, homophobic attacks online to city council meetings that devolve into screaming matches. The COVID-19 pandemic, racial reckoning and other recent national crises pushed many things to the extreme and threats and harassment against local leaders are no exception. While a certain amount of disagreement is a healthy part of a functioning democracy, civil discourse in America has been increasingly in decline. Eighty-seven percent of surveyed local officials have noticed an increase in levels of harassment, threats and violence during their time in office. While more than 8 in 10 surveyed local officials have experienced some form of harassment, threats and violence, fewer than half work in an office with a strategy to handle these incidents. This report sheds light on the impact felt by local officials and their communities across the country and offers a three-pronged approach to help keep them safe from threats, while maintaining their mental and physical wellbeing

An Analysis of the Decay B→D∗XℓνˉℓB \rightarrow D^* X \ell \bar\nu_\ell with Predictions from Heavy Quark and Chiral Symmetry

This paper considers the implications of the heavy quark and chiral symmetries for the semi-leptonic decay B→D∗XℓνˉℓB \rightarrow D^* X \ell \bar \nu_\ell. The general kinematic analysis for decays of the form {\sl pseudoscalar meson →\rightarrow vector meson ++ pseudoscalar meson ++ lepton ++ anti-lepton} is presented. This formalism is applied to the above exclusive decay which allows the differential decay rate to be expressed in a form that is ideally suited for the experimental determination of the different form factors for the process through angular distribution measurements. Heavy quark and chiral symmetry predictions for the form factors are presented, and the differential decay rate is calculated in the kinematic region where chiral perturbation theory is valid.Comment: 15 pages, uses jytex.tex and tables.tex; 3 figures not included but available on reques
