    UK views towards breastfeeding in public: an analysis of the public's response to the Claridge’s incident

    Background: The embarrassment UK mothers experience when breastfeeding in public has often been cited as a key factor in the decision of the mother to discontinue breastfeeding. There is convincing evidence that many UK residents are not comfortable with women breastfeeding in public; however, little is known about the underlying reasons for this discomfort. Objective: To assess views on breastfeeding in public in the United Kingdom and to understand why some UK residents object to this practice. Methods: The comment sections of news media websites and parenting forums were systematically identified and reviewed for statements made in response to an incident widely reported in the British press: a woman was asked to cover up while breastfeeding in public at Claridge’s, a London luxury hotel. Of these, 805 comments (73,108 words) met the inclusion criteria and were thematically analyzed. Results: The majority of commenters were supportive of “discreet” breastfeeding in public, but a significant portion felt that breastfeeding in public is always inappropriate. Sexualization of the breast was mainly evoked as something others may experience while viewing a breastfeeding mother, rather than to reflect the commenters' own views. Common justifications cited against breastfeeding in public were onlookers’ embarrassment (not knowing where to look) and disgust (at bodily fluids and/or functions). Conclusion: Campaigns portraying breastfeeding in public as normal and desirable with a focus on human milk as food rather than a bodily fluid may improve societal acceptance of breastfeeding in public.     Magnetic properties of a family of [MnIII4LnIII4] wheel complexes: an experimental and theoretical study

    The chelating ligand 1,3-bis(tris(hydroxymethyl)methylamino)propane (H6L) has been used to synthesize a family of octanuclear heterometallic complexes with the formula (NMe4)3[Mn4Ln4(H2L)3(H3L)(NO3)12] (Ln = La (1), Ce (2), Pr (3), Nd (4)). Encapsulation by the ligand causes the Mn(III) centers to lie in an unusually distorted (∌C2v) environment, which is shown by density functional theory and complete active space self-consistent field calculations to impact on the magnetic anisotropy of the Mn(III) ion. The theoretical study also supports the experimental observation of a ferromagnetic superexchange interaction between the Mn(III) ions in 1, despite the ions being separated by the diamagnetic La(III) ion. The optical properties of the compounds show that the distortion of the Mn(III) ions leads to three broad absorption bands originating from the transition metal ion, while the Nd(III) containing complex also displays some weak sharp features arising from the lanthanide f–f transitions

    Nonparametric statistical downscaling for the fusion of data of different spatiotemporal support

    Statistical downscaling has been developed for the fusion of data of different spatial support. However, environmental data often have different temporal support, which must also be accounted for. This paper presents a novel method of nonparametric statistical downscaling, which enables the fusion of data of different spatiotemporal support through treating the data at each location as observations of smooth functions over time. This is incorporated within a Bayesian hierarchical model with smoothly spatially varying coefficients, which provides predictions at any location or time, with associated estimates of uncertainty. The method is motivated by an application for the fusion of in situ and satellite remote sensing log(chlorophyll-a) data from Lake Balaton, in order to improve the understanding of water quality patterns over space and time
