    Sex determination by measuring the maximum width of maxillary incisors, canines and mandibular canines in a sample of young South African adults

    >Magister Scientiae - MScSex determination of human remains is often a dilemma for forensic experts due to the decomposing factor, or, if only part of a body is found. The analysis of DNA is thought to be the most accurate method for sex determination, but the cost and time involvement usually causes a delay in the identification process and in some cases, DNA is not obtainable due to the state of decomposition or contamination. Sexual dimorphism refers to the difference in shape, form or appearance between male and females in the same species. It can also be described as the systematic difference between individuals of different sex in the same species. Dimorphism in the human skeletal system and dentition is well establish. It is generally assumed that the male dentition is larger than the female dentition. In this study, the mesio-distal width of the maxillary incisors and canines, as well as the mandibular canines were measured. Orthodontic study models were used in this study, 50 males and 50 females, in which the sizes of the maxillary central incisors, maxillary lateral incisors, and maxillary and mandibular canines were measured. The results showed that the sizes of the maxillary and the mandibular canines were significantly more accurate in determining sexual dimorphism than the incisors. The logistic regression model, using tooth 13 and 33, provides prediction accuracy of 52% for males and 74% for females

    Land restitution, traditional leadership and belonging: defining Barokologadi identity

    How do government policies and practices affect struggles over collective identity and struggles over land? Examining the interconnections among collective identity struggles, land struggles and state policies and practices in post-apartheid South Africa, this paper argues that the government\u27s contradictory policies and ambivalent practices have aggravated collective struggles over the boundaries of belonging. Specifically, the differing definitions of community set forth in traditional leadership, land tenure and land restitution policies exacerbate existing divisions among ‘communities’ concurrently subject to these policies and create practical policy dilemmas for decision-makers. This paper illustrates the interplay between public policies and collective identity struggles through close examination of struggles among the Barokologadi ba ga Maotwe, a so-called traditional community. The Barokologadi case underscores the necessity of attending to these interactions

    Decomposition Rates of Organic Material across Herbivore Treatments in a Nutrient-Rich Semi-Arid Sodic Savanna

    Decomposition is a major determinant of terrestrial nutrient cycling and therefore an important regulator of ecosystem structure and function. It has been widely documented that large mammalian herbivores (LMH) act as a significant driver of changes to aboveground structure and modifications to edaphic properties. Little is known about the role of herbivory, and particularly the loss thereof, in mediating essential ecological processes in a herbivore-adapted system. The Nkuhlu exclosures, a large-scale, long-term exclusion experiment in the Kruger National Park, South Africa, provided an opportunity to explore the effects of herbivory and/or its long-term exclusion on decomposition and stabilisation of detrital plant material. An extended, site-specific version of the Tea Bag Index approach was used to quantify decomposition rate (k) and stabilisation factor (S) of standardised litter substrate. Two hundred and fifty tea bags (125 green and 125 rooibos tea bags) applied in a paired tea bag design were exposed to three herbivore treatments along the sodic zone of the Nkuhlu exclosures and removed after three months of incubation. Decomposition rates (k) were highest in the presence of LMH and lowest in their absence. Conversely, stabilisation factor (S) was significantly higher in treatments from which herbivores have been excluded for ~18 years. Our study provides evidence that LMH can influence essential ecological processes such as decomposition and stabilisation of detrital plant material. Moreover, results confirmed that ecosystems that evolved with herbivores, are sensitive to herbivore loss as it reduces decomposition rates of plant detritus and hence, decelerates ecosystem nutrient cycling

    Set against the backdrop of the Babylonian Invasion and Exile, the Book of Jeremiah represents a variety of different perspectives on how to survive imperial domination. This article explores three competing visions that can be described in terms of the tension that exists between the pro-golah group that propagated life in Babylon, the anti-golah group that saw the hope for the future back home and the group of refugees who in the aftermath of the Mizpah massacre found themselves fleeing to Egypt. In the current context of global migration, this article considers theological and ethical perspectives generated by the engagement with Jeremiah on home and homecoming in a context where there is no good option

    Aircraft noise control policy and mental health: a natural experiment based on the Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam (LASA)

    Background This study examines the impact of environmental noise policy on depressive symptoms by exploiting the national experiment afforded by the New Deal aircraft noise control policy introduced in Schiphol (Amsterdam) in 2008. Methods Data came from older adults (ages 57-102) participating in three waves (2005/2006, 2008/2009 and 2011/2012) of the Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam (LASA) (N=1746). Aircraft noise data from the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency were linked to LASA cohort addresses using the GeoDMS software. The Centre for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression (CES-D) scale was used to measure depressive symptoms. Using a difference-in-dfferences (DiD) approach, we compared changes in CES-D levels of depressive symptoms before and after the policy between people living close (≤15 km) and those living far away (>15 km) from Schiphol airport. Results There were few changes in noise levels after the introduction of the policy. Estimates suggested that the policy did not lead to a reduction in noise levels in the treatment areas relative to the control areas (DiD estimate=0.916 dB(A), SE=0.345), and it had no significant impact on levels of depressive symptoms (DiD estimate=0.044, SE=0.704). Results were robust to applying different distance thresholds. Conclusion The New Deal aircraft noise control policy introduced in Amsterdam was not effective in reducing aircraft noise levels and had no impact on depressive symptoms in older people. Our results raise questions about the effectiveness of the current noise control policy to improve the well-being of residents living near the airport

    Living kidney donation among ethnic minorities: A Dutch qualitative study on attitudes, communication, knowledge and needs of kidney patients

    Background: Terminal kidney patients are faced with lower quality of life during dialysis treatment, restricted diets and high morbidity and mortality rates while waiting for a deceased donor kidney transplantation. Fortunately, living donor kidney transplantation offers an alternative with considerable advantages in terms of waiting time and graft survival rates. Nevertheless, we observed an inequality in the proportion of living kidney transplantations performed between the non-European patients and the European patients in our centre. To date little is known about the factors contributing towards this racial disparity. Previous research from our centre did not find any medical reasons to explain this racial disparity. We believe that non-medical psychosocial and cultural factors predominantly account for this discrepancy. Purpose Focus group discussions and in-depth interviews were conducted in order to gain insight in the attitudes, (non-)communication and knowledge of our non-European patients (compared to European patients) regarding living donor kidney transplantation (LDKT). Additionally, we investigated their attitudes towards professional support in finding an eligible living donor. Methods: The interviews were held in line with the focus group method and analyzed according to the grounded theory. The interviews were focused on six main topics (kidney transplantation, living kidney donation, communication, information, knowledge and intervention needs). European patients were included as a comparison group. The qualitative data analyses were performed in Atlas.ti. Results:We found nearly all our patient to be in favour of a living kidney transplantation (96%). However multiple prohibiting intertwined factors play a role when actually considering a living donor. We found four major barriers to the living donor transplantation process in our non-European patients: 1) not (so easily) comprehensible non-patient-centered information 2) cognitions and emotions (based on fears, concerns and misconceptions) 3) a state of basically non-communication with the potential donor(s) on this issue (as a consequence of personal and cultural beliefs) 4) and social influences. We also found some similar factors playing a role in the donation course of our European patients without a living donor. Finally, our patients held a welcoming attitude towards an intervention aimed at assisting them getting though the living donation program. Discussion: This study has identified several modifiable determinants underlying racial disparity in our living donor kidney transplantation program and investigated patients’ attitude towards two interventions aimed at alleviating this inequality. We realize that our list of barriers may not be thorough enough and surely more is to be said on this topic, the findings offer possible targets for intervention.     Institutions and governance of communal rangelands in South Africa

    The creation of local institutions with a mandate over land access and control is seen as a prerequisite for successful decentralisation of land tenure and effective local resource management in sub-Saharan Africa. However, with land tenure reform in South Africa currently at a state of legislative impasse, real uncertainty now exists over land rights and governance of rangeland in many communal areas. This paper draws on case study material from Eastern Cape province to illustrate how this ongoing uncertainty has resulted in the operation of a range of traditional authority and civil society institutions in different communal areas with varying degrees of legitimate authority over land administration and highly variable performance in managing rangeland resources. Collective management of rangeland resources seems most difficult in environments where land rights are contested because of the coexistence of traditional leaders and civil society institutions. On this basis an approach to tenure reform is advocated, which vests all powers over local land administration in democratically elected and accountable civil society institutions. Some successful examples of this already exist and might serve to guide policy formation, which must be flexible enough to accommodate collective management approaches that emphasise cooperation both within and between communities.Keywords: common property, land tenure, natural resource management, traditional leadersAfrican Journal of Range & Forage Science 2013, 30(1&2): 77–8

    Effects of CYP3A4*22 and CYP3A5 on clinical outcome in patients treated with ticagrelor for ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction: POPular Genetics sub-study

    Aims: To determine the clinical efficacy, adverse events and side-effect dyspnea of CYP3A4*22 and CYP3A5 expressor status in ticagrelor treated patients.Methods and results: Ticagrelor treated patients from the POPular Genetics randomized controlled trial were genotyped for CYP3A4*22 and CYP3A5*3 alleles. Patients were divided based on their genotype. In total 1,281 patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) were included. CYP3A4*22 carriers (n = 152) versus CYP3A4*22 non-carrier status (n = 1,129) were not found to have a significant correlation with the primary thrombotic endpoint: cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, definite stent thrombosis and stroke [1.3% vs. 2.5%, adjusted hazard ratio 1.81 (0.43–7.62) p = 0.42], or the primary bleeding endpoint: PLATO major and minor bleeding [13.2% vs. 11.3%, adjusted hazard ratio 0.93 (0.58–1.50) p = 0.77]. Among the CYP3A4*1/*1 patients, CYP3A5 expressors (n = 196) versus non-expressors (n = 926) did not show a significant difference for the primary thrombotic [2.6% vs. 2.5%, adjusted hazard ratio 1.03 (0.39–2.71) p = 0.95], or the primary bleeding endpoint [12.8% vs. 10.9%, adjusted hazard ratio 1.13 (0.73–1.76) p = 0.58]. With respect to dyspnea, no significant difference was observed between CYP3A4*22 carriers versus CYP3A4*22 non-carriers [44.0% vs. 45.0%, odds ratio 1.04 (0.45–2.42) p = 0.93], or in the CYP3A4*1/*1 group, CYP3A5 expressors versus CYP3A5 non-expressors [35.3% vs. 47.8%, odds ratio 0.60 (0.27–1.30) p = 0.20].Conclusion: In STEMI patients treated with ticagrelor, neither the CYP3A4*22 carriers, nor the CYP3A5 expressor status had a statistical significant effect on thrombotic and bleeding event rates nor on dyspnea.Clinical Trial Registration:ClinicalTrials.gov, identifier NCT01761786
