Measurement of the position resolution of the Gas Pixel Detector
The Gas Pixel Detector was designed and built as a focal plane instrument for
X-ray polarimetry of celestial sources, the last unexplored subtopics of X-ray
astronomy. It promises to perform detailed and sensitive measurements resolving
extended sources and detecting polarization in faint sources in crowded fields
at the focus of telescopes of good angular resolution. Its polarimetric and
spectral capability were already studied in earlier works. Here we investigate
for the first time, with both laboratory measurements and Monte Carlo
simulations, its imaging properties to confirm its unique capability to carry

Arterial hypertension and dyslipidemia in a HIV-positive patient treated with antiretroviral therapy
The introduction of antiretroviral therapy (ART) has substantially modified the clinical history and epidemiology of HIV infection with an important decline in infective causes of death and an increase in non-infective comorbidities particularly in cardiovascular complications. HIV infection has been related to an increased cardiovascular risk due to the presence of three factors: classic cardiovascular risk factors (shared with the general population), HIV infection itself (indirectly due to the inflammation and directly due to viral molecule) and ART-related chronic metabolic alterations. We describe a peculiar case of metabolic alteration in an HIV infected patient on ART with particular attention to the diagnosis and therapeutic aspects. Giving the higher cardiovascular risk of this specific population it is advisable that the clinician performs a frequent re-assessment of risk factors and cardiovascular organ damage. An early detection of metabolic alteration must lead to an aggressive specific therapy; this must be done by taking care of the HIV-infected subject fragility and the interactions with ART
An X-ray Polarimeter for HXMT Mission
The development of micropixel gas detectors, capable to image tracks produced
in a gas by photoelectrons, makes possible to perform polarimetry of X-ray
celestial sources in the focus of grazing incidence X-ray telescopes. HXMT is a
mission by the Chinese Space Agency aimed to survey the Hard X-ray Sky with
Phoswich detectors, by exploitation of the direct demodulation technique. Since
a fraction of the HXMT time will be spent on dedicated pointing of particular
sources, it could host, with moderate additional resources a pair of X-ray
telescopes, each with a photoelectric X-ray polarimeter in the focal plane. We
present the design of the telescopes and the focal plane instrumentation and
discuss the performance of this instrument to detect the degree and angle of
linear polarization of some representative sources. Notwithstanding the limited
resources the proposed instrument can represent a breakthrough in X-ray

Re-testing the JET-X Flight Module No. 2 at the PANTER facility
The Joint European X-ray Telescope (JET-X) was the core instrument of the
Russian Spectrum-X-gamma space observatory. It consisted of two identical soft
X-ray (0.3 - 10 keV) telescopes with focusing optical modules having a measured
angular resolution of nearly 15 arcsec. Soon after the payload completion, the
mission was cancelled and the two optical flight modules (FM) were brought to
the Brera Astronomical Observatory where they had been manufactured. After 16
years of storage, we have utilized the JET-X FM2 to test at the PANTER X-ray
facility a prototype of a novel X-ray polarimetric telescope, using a Gas Pixel
Detector (GPD) with polarimetric capabilities in the focal plane of the FM2.
The GPD was developed by a collaboration between INFN-Pisa and INAF-IAPS. In
the first phase of the test campaign, we have re-tested the FM2 at PANTER to
have an up-to-date characterization in terms of angular resolution and
effective area, while in the second part of the test the GPD has been placed in
the focal plane of the FM2. In this paper we report the results of the tests of
the sole FM2, using an unpolarized X-ray source, comparing the results with the

An X-ray polarimeter for hard X-ray optics
Development of multi-layer optics makes feasible the use of X-ray telescope
at energy up to 60-80 keV: in this paper we discuss the extension of
photoelectric polarimeter based on Micro Pattern Gas Chamber to high energy
X-rays. We calculated the sensitivity with Neon and Argon based mixtures at
high pressure with thick absorption gap: placing the MPGC at focus of a next
generation multi-layer optics, galatic and extragalactic X-ray polarimetry can

Defence strategies and antibiotic resistance gene abundance in enterococci under stress by exposure to low doses of peracetic acid
partially_open12noPeracetic acid (PAA) is an organic compound used efficiently as disinfectant in wastewater treatments.
Yet, at low doses it may cause selection; thus, the effect of low doses of PAA on Enterococcus faecium as a
proxy of human-related microbial waste was evaluated. Bacteria were treated with increasing doses of
PAA (from 0 to 25 mg L1 min) and incubated in regrowth experiments under non-growing, limiting
conditions and under growing, favorable conditions. The changes in bacterial abundance, in bacterial
phenotype (number and composition of small cell clusters), and in the abundance of an antibiotic
resistance gene (ARG) was evaluated. The experiment demonstrated that the selected doses of PAA
efficiently removed enterococci, and induced a long-lasting effect after PAA inactivation. The relative
abundance of small clusters increased during the experiment when compared with that of the inoculum.
Moreover, under growing favorable conditions the relative abundance of small clusters decreased and
the number of cells per cluster increased with increasing PAA doses. A strong stability of the measured
ARG was found, not showing any effect during the whole experiment. The results demonstrated the
feasibility of low doses of PAA to inactivate bacteria. However, the stress induced by PAA disinfection

POLARIX: a pathfinder mission of X-ray polarimetry
Since the birth of X-ray astronomy, spectral, spatial and timing observation
improved dramatically, procuring a wealth of information on the majority of the
classes of the celestial sources. Polarimetry, instead, remained basically
unprobed. X-ray polarimetry promises to provide additional information
procuring two new observable quantities, the degree and the angle of
polarization. POLARIX is a mission dedicated to X-ray polarimetry. It exploits
the polarimetric response of a Gas Pixel Detector, combined with position
sensitivity, that, at the focus of a telescope, results in a huge increase of
sensitivity. Three Gas Pixel Detectors are coupled with three X-ray optics
which are the heritage of JET-X mission. POLARIX will measure time resolved
X-ray polarization with an angular resolution of about 20 arcsec in a field of
view of 15 arcmin 15 arcmin and with an energy resolution of 20 % at 6
keV. The Minimum Detectable Polarization is 12 % for a source having a flux of
1 mCrab and 10^5 s of observing time. The satellite will be placed in an
equatorial orbit of 505 km of altitude by a Vega launcher.The telemetry
down-link station will be Malindi. The pointing of POLARIX satellite will be
gyroless and it will perform a double pointing during the earth occultation of
one source, so maximizing the scientific return. POLARIX data are for 75 % open
to the community while 25 % + SVP (Science Verification Phase, 1 month of
operation) is dedicated to a core program activity open to the contribution of
associated scientists. The planned duration of the mission is one year plus
three months of commissioning and SVP, suitable to perform most of the basic

A highly endemic area of Echinococcus multilocularis identified through a comparative re-assessment of prevalence in the red fox (Vulpes vulpes), Alto Adige (Italy: 2019-2020)
Surveillance of Echinococcus multilocularis at the edge of its range is hindered by fragmented distributional patterns and low prevalence in definitive hosts. Thus, tests with adequate levels of sensitivity are especially important for discriminating between infected and non-infected areas. In this study we reassessed the prevalence of E. multilocularis at the southern border of its distribution in Province of Bolzano (Alto Adige, northeastern Alps, Italy), to improve surveillance in wildlife and provide more accurate estimates of exposure risk. We compared the diagnostic test currently implemented for surveillance based on coproscopy and multiplex PCR (CMPCR) to a real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR) in 235 fox faeces collected in 2019 and 2020. The performances of the two tests were estimated using a scraping technique (SFCT) applied to the small intestines of a subsample (n = 123) of the same foxes as the reference standard. True prevalence was calculated and the sample size required by each faecal test for the detection of the parasite was then estimated. True prevalence of E. multilocularis in foxes (14.3%) was markedly higher than reported in the last decade, which was never more than 5% from 2012 to 2018 in the same area. In addition, qPCR showed a much higher sensitivity (83%) compared to CMPCR (21%) and agreement with the reference standard was far higher for qPCR (0.816) than CMPCR (0.298) meaning that for the latter protocol, a smaller sample size would be required to detect the disease. Alto Adige should be considered a highly endemic area. Routine surveillance on definitive hosts at the edges of the E. multilocularis distribution should be applied to smaller geographic areas, and rapid, sensitive diagnostic tools using directly host faeces, such as qPCR, should be adopted
MicroRNA 193b-3p as a predictive biomarker of chronic kidney disease in patients undergoing radical nephrectomy for renal cell carcinoma
Background:
A significant proportion of patients undergoing radical nephrectomy (RN) for clear-cell renal cell carcinoma (RCC) develop chronic kidney disease (CKD) within a few years following surgery. Chronic kidney disease has important health, social and economic impact and no predictive biomarkers are currently available. MicroRNAs (miRs) are small non-coding RNAs implicated in several pathological processes.
Methods:
Primary objective of our study was to define miRs whose deregulation is predictive of CKD in patients treated with RN. Ribonucleic acid from formalin-fixed paraffin embedded renal parenchyma (cortex and medulla isolated separately) situated >3âcm from the matching RCC was tested for miR expression using nCounter NanoString technology in 71 consecutive patients treated with RN for RCC. Validation was performed by RTâPCR and in situ hybridisation. End point was post-RN CKD measured 12 months post-operatively. Multivariable logistic regression and decision curve analysis were used to test the statistical and clinical impact of predictors of CKD.
Results:
The overexpression of miR-193b-3p was associated with high risk of developing CKD in patients undergoing RN for RCC and emerged as an independent predictor of CKD. The addition of miR-193b-3p to a predictive model based on clinical variables (including sex and estimated glomerular filtration rate) increased the sensitivity of the predictive model from 81 to 88%. In situ hybridisation showed that miR-193b-3p overexpression was associated with tubule-interstitial inflammation and fibrosis in patients with no clinical or biochemical evidence of pre-RN nephropathy.
Conclusions:
miR-193b-3p might represent a useful biomarker to tailor and implement surveillance strategies for patients at high risk of developing CKD following RN
