Drainage basins evolution during the Neogene-Quaternary. Ebro Basin eastern margin
The monocline layout of the sedimentary pile of the Ebro Basin in its
Eastern margin determines the generation and emptying of the adjacent
erosive basins. It controls the drainage changes in the original sedimentary
basin. A model of emptying erosive basins corresponding to a drainage
architecture and sediment production is proposed. The emptying of erosive
basins is achieved by two vectors: A) A drainage basin area growth due to
anaclinal streams eroding into the resistant layers of the monocline
stratigraphic succession. These streams empty and link small depressions
generated at the expense of the lateral extension on the less resistant
lithologic member. B) The drainage basin outlet point base level controls the
drainage network entrenchment facilitated by the gradients created by
Neogene extensional faults from the Valencia Trough. A model of the growth
and entrenchment of erosive basins as well as the generated landforms and
sediment production is described and analyze
The dioritic-gabbroic intrusive complex of Susqueda (Montseny鈥揋uilleries massif, Catalonia): lithological units and petrographic features
The intrusive complex of Susqueda constitutes the biggest association of plutonic mafic rocks of the Catalonian Coastal Ranges. It is located in the contact between the large calc-alkaline granitoid intrusions and the Paleozoic country rocks affected by Hercynian regional metamorphism.
Intrusive relationships denote contemporaneity of basic magmas and, at least, an acid magma intrusion. A significant part of the outcrop consists of a heterogeneous mixing zone between the two magmas (mingling). The intrusion is made up of two oval-shaped outcrops about 3 km long, elongated in the N鈥揝 direction and separated by a NW鈥揝E fault. In these units, the compositions of the plutonic rocks range from quartz diorites and tonalites (in the mixing zones) up to olivine hornblendites. Even though its distribution is quite heterogeneous, a preliminary cartography was made including the different petrographic types in three main groups: 1) hornblende gabbros and olivine hornblendites; 2) biotite-hornblende diorites; and 3) heterogeneous mixing zone between hornblende-biotite quartz diorite, granodiorite, and tonalite. The predominant mineral composition consists of plagioclase and amphibole, typical of dioritic rocks. Nevertheless, in a great part of the outcrop the plagioclase widely exceeds the 50% in An, typical of gabbroic rocksEl complejo intrusivo de Susqueda constituye la mayor asociaci贸n plut贸nica de rocas m谩ficas del batolito de las Cordilleras Costeras Catalanas.
Detailed work on the La Massana anticline reveals that it represents a structural unit bounded by late thrusts. Its internal structure results from the superposition of premainphase and mainphase folds. This complex structure is not reflected in the cartographic pattern which had been interpreted as a simple anticline. As a result, the revision of the previously defined major structural units from the Variscan rocks cropping out in the Pyrenees is pose
Homoclinal shifting in La Plana de Vic drainage basin. Ebro Basin eastern margin
An homoclinal shifting process that affected the Paleogene series of Les Guilleries and Collsacabra massifs in NE of Ebro basin is analyzed. This process was in itiated by the reactivation of the Amer Fault. A anaclinal stream incised on the fault scarp accessing the least resistant paleogene units. The result was the formation of strike valleys. The most important is La Plana de Vic. It has been reconstructed the route of the headw ard erosion of the anaclin al stream through remnants of ancient strike streams flow inginto the basin sink, and its cataclinal tributaries draining the cuesta. During the homoclinal shifting three incisions on a large anticlinal structure in the north (Bellmunt Anticline) and the incision on the Montseny massif in the south were made. The last of the incisions into the Bellmunt Anticline reached by headward erosion an older longitudinal drainage network with the headwaters in the axial Pyrenees. The result of the homoclinal shifting process was the capture of older drainage basins and the formation of the current drainage basin of river Tee analiza un proceso de migraci贸n lateral de una red de drenaje formada sobre materiales pale贸genos de los macizos de Les Guilleries y Collsacabra en el NE de la Cuenca del Ebro.
The hydrographic divide between the Ebro basin and the Catalan
Internal Drainage Basins, in the NE of the Iberian Peninsula, is a good area
to analyze the characteristics of torrential transport on two different types
of drainage basins under a very similar climatic environment. These two types
are a dip stream drainage basin (Ondara) and an anti-dip stream drainage
basin (Anoia). Pleistocene deposits on the dip slope (Ondara) and those
formed by anti-dip streams (Anoia) are analyzed and compared. Deposits
are multistorey accumulations of heterometrical clasts showing erosive bases.
They are interpreted as the result of confined and unconfined, highly
energetic, high density, and ephemeral tractive aqueous transport that could
have been produced by similar flows to those of flash flood type.
Despite the spatial proximity, there are marked differences between the
deposits of both rivers. In the Anoia River basin, accumulations show a higher
energy level and a greater clast heterometry, compared to those from the
Ondara River basin. These characteristics are basically due to the greater
gradient of the drainage basin (1.6 times higher) that increases the speed
and energy of the tractive flow.
