Students With Disabilities: Practical Information for School Counselors in Turkey

    No full text
In Turkey, there is a lack of literature that is focused on providing school counselors working in mainstream schools with practical information about working with students with disabilities, despite the research indicating a need in this regard. This article was thus written with the aim of helping school counselors in Turkey better assist students with disabilities by providing them with current and practical information about working with such students. Another objective of this article was to present a comparative perspective for counselors and other readers who are interested in students with disabilities and inclusive education in other countries. Following a brief overview of common challenges experienced by students with disabilities and the importance of disability legislation, a description of school counselor roles pertaining to students with disabilities is provided. Information is also provided on interacting with students with disabilities and disability etiquette, increasing student respect and sensitivity to people with disabilities in schools, and working with parents, teachers, and school administrators

Tezer, Murat/0000-0002-8312-9162WOS: 000427555900009This research aimed to examine the impact of using mobile-supported learning management systems (LMS) in teaching web design on the academic success of students and their opinion on the course; and it was conducted on 70 volunteer students (35 experimental, 35 control) enrolled at Giresun University, Technical Sciences Vocational School, Computer Technologies Department, Program of Computer Programming in Spring 2015-2016. After the eight weeks long implementation of Mobile Moodle, which is a mobile-supported LMS, as a supplement to traditional learning methods; t-test was used in order to determine whether the methodology mentioned had a significant impact on the academic success of web design teaching. As a result of the t-test implemented; it was seen that there was a significant level of difference in favor of the experimental group; between the academic success of students in the experimental group where mobile-supported LMS is used and the academic success of the students in the control group where traditional learning methodologies are used. Also, it has been determined that using Mobile LMS has increased the students' interest

Objective: Restless legs syndrome is a disorder that negatively affects quality of life. Pregnancy increases the frequency of restless leg syndrome. Symptoms that occur during pregnancy can become permanent. This study aimed to investigate the possible relationship between restless legs syndrome and biochemical parameters. Method: Alanya Alaaddin Keykubat University Education and Research Hospital was included in our randomly selected 100 pregnant women that applied to the Gynecology and Obstetrics outpatient clinic. The demographic characteristics and laboratory results of the patients were recorded. Patients were divided into two groups: one group with restless leg syndrome, and one group without. It was investigated whether there is a statistically significant difference between the demographic characteristics, blood biochemical levels, and hormonal levels between the two groups. Results: Age, height, weight, body mass index, ferritin with pregnancy week, magnesium, vitamin D, vitamin B12, thyroid stimulant hormone (TSH), hemoglobin, calcium, and aspartate aminotransferase / alanine aminotransferase (AST/ALT) levels were similar between the two groups (p>0.05). Conclusion: Restless legs syndrome is seen in about a third of the pregnancies. Pregnant patients do not come to the doctor with this complaint, because leg complaints are a normal condition caused by pregnancy. For this reason, they continue to live with symptoms of restless leg syndrome and endure this problem. However, this disease can be diagnosed with specific inquiries of physicians regarding restless leg syndrome. Although this study could establish no significant relationship between routine biochemical parameters and RLS, it is essential to examine the possible relationship in larger patient groups in terms of evidence-based medicine

The provision of antenatal care in adolescents in refugee populations presents particular difficulties because of conflict, nutritional deficiencies, language barriers and lack of access to health care facilities. Due to the absence of prenatal care, associated medical complications can occur. A total of 525 adolescent women who gave birth to singletons agreed to participate in this study. Data about maternal demographic and obstetric characteristics, as well as neonatal outcomes were analysed. In conclusion, adolescent pregnancy continues to be an important social problem due to health support needs. However, the results of our present study are important in terms of showing that perinatal care is quietly improving in Turkey.Impact Statement What is already known on this subject? Adolescent pregnancies are at much higher risk than adult pregnancies in terms of complications. These complications include preterm delivery, intrauterine growth retardation, maternal morbidity and mortality, neonatal morbidity and mortality. According to various beliefs and traditions, marriages in early ages are observed in some societies and as a result, adolescents become pregnant. Additionally, the present study includes early adolescent aged pregnancies as 14,15 and 16. As far as we search in the literature, there is no reported about early adolescent pregnancies. What do the results of this study add? Often, such pregnancies occur more frequently in societies with low socioeconomic levels. For this reason routine pregnancy screening, support during pregnancy, prenatal care is not adequately provided. Some of the complications develop on them. Primarily, the adolescent pregnancies should be gotten under control, if not, some complications can be prevented by routine pregnancy follow-up and adequate provision of prenatal care and support. What are the implications of these findings for clinical practice and/or further research? As a guide on clinical practices and further studies; an effective method of contraception should be applied to sexually active women at early maternal age. If not, pregnancies should be kept under close follow-up and with adequate support to avoid complications
