Unbroken supersymmetry in the Aharonov-Casher effect
We consider the problem of the bound states of a spin 1/2 chargless particle
in a given Aharonov-Casher configuration. To this end we recast the description
of the system in a supersymmetric form. Then the basic physical requirements
for unbroken supersymmetry are established. We comment on the possibility of
neutron confinement in this system
Persistent spin and mass currents and Aharonov-Casher effect
Spin-orbit interaction produces persistent spin and mass currents in the ring
via the Aharonov-Casher effect. The experiment in phase, in which
this effect leads to the excitation of mass and spin supercurrent is proposed.Comment: 10 page
A new cylindrical borehole detector for radiographic imaging with muons
Muon radiography is a methodology which enables measuring the mass distribution within large objects. It exploits the abundant flux of cosmic muons and uses detectors with different technologies depending on the application. As the sensitive surface and geometric acceptance are two fundamental parameters for increasing the collection of muons, the optimization of the detectors is very significant. Here we show a potentially innovative detector of size and shape suitable to be inserted inside a borehole, that optimizes the sensitive area and maximizes the angular acceptance thanks to its cylindrical geometry obtained using plastic arc-shaped scintillators. Good spatial resolution is obtained with a reasonable number of channels. The dimensions of the detector make it ideal for use in 25 cm diameter wells. Detailed simulations based on Monte Carlo methods show great cavity detection capability. The detector has been tested in the laboratory, achieving overall excellent performance
Muon Radiography Investigations in Boreholes with a Newly Designed Cylindrical Detector
Muons are constantly produced in cosmic-rays and reach the Earth surface with a flux of about 160 particles per second per square meter. The abundance of muons with respect to other cosmic particles and their capability to cross dense materials with low absorption rate allow them to be exploited for large scale geological or human-made object imaging. Muon radiography is based on similar principles as X-ray radiography, measuring the surviving rate of muons escaping the target and relating it to the mass distribution inside the object. In the course of decades, after the first application in 1955, the methodology has been applied in several different fields. Muography allows us to measure the internal density distribution of the investigated object, or to simply highlight the presence of void regions by observing any excess of muons. Most of these applications require the detector to be installed below the rock being probed. In case that possible installation sites are not easily accessible by people, common instrumentation cannot be installed. A novel borehole cylindrical detector for muon radiography has been recently developed to deal with these conditions. It has been realized with a cylindrical geometry to fit typical borehole dimensions. Its design maximizes the geometrical acceptance, minimizing the dead spaces by the use of arc-shaped scintillators. The details of the construction and preliminary results of the first usage are described in this paper. © 2022 by the authors
The correct prednisone starting dose in polymyalgia rheumatica is related to body weight but not to disease severity

Abstract

Background

the mainstay of treatment of polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) is oral glucocorticoids, but randomized controlled trials of treatment are lacking. As a result, there is no evidence from controlled studies on the efficacy of different initial doses or glucocorticoid tapering. The aim of this study is to test if 12.5 mg prednisone/day is an adequate starting dose in PMR and to evaluate clinical predictors of drug response.

Methods

60 consecutive PMR patients were treated with a starting dose of 12,5 mg/day prednisone. Clinical, laboratory, and, in a subset of 25 patients, ultrasonographic features were recorded as possible predictors of response to prednisone. Remission was defined as disappearance of at least 75% of the signs and symptoms of PMR and normalization of ESR and CRP within the first month, a scenario allowing steroid tapering.

Results

47/60 (78.3%) patients responded to 12.5 mg of prednisone after a mean interval of 6.6 ± 5.2 days. In univariate analysis, body weight and gender discriminated the two groups. In multivariate analysis, the only factor predicting a good response was low weight (p = 0.004); the higher response rate observed in women was explained by their lower weight. The mean prednisone dose per kg in the responders was 0.19 ± 0.03 mg in comparison with 0.16 ± 0.03 mg for non responders (p = 0.007).

Conclusions

12.5 mg prednisone is a sufficient starting dose in ¾ of PMR patients. The main factor driving response to prednisone in PMR was weight, a finding that could help in the clinical care of PMR patients and in designing prospective studies of treatment.

Trial Registration

ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT01169597</p
Irradiation of luminescence dosimeters in pulsed mixed radiation fields
UHDpulse - Metrology for Advanced Radiotherapy using beams with Ultra-High
Pulse Dose Rates is a European project aimed at developing novel dosimetry
standards, as well as improving existing ones, for FLASH radiotherapy, very
high energy electrons radiotherapy, and laser-driven medical accelerators.
Within the scope of this project, Thermoluminescence (TL) and Optically
Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) detectors are used to measure stray radiation
fields. Experiments performed with conventional pulsed particle-beams allow to
characterize the dosimeters in known and controllable radiation fields. In
turn, this allows to develop models and predict their behavior in complex
radiation fields, such as those at laser-driven and FLASH facilities. TL and
OSL detectors were irradiated at the Microtron MT25 electron accelerator in
Prague, Czech Republic. GAFChromicTM films and plastic nuclear track detectors
were used to study the beam profile and the neutron background respectively.
The responses of the different detector to the pulsed mixed radiation fields of
the Microtron MT25 are compared among each other and presented in this paper
Modification of the levels of delta-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase in chronic alcoholic patients
Medical and biochemical analysis were performed on 58 patients with chronic alcoholism. In accordance with medical characterisation, patients were divided in three groups: A (patients having only hepatopathy), B (patients with hepatopathy and neuropathy) and C (patients having only alcoholic neuropathy). Simultaneously, several parameters related to heme biosynthesis were examined. Urinary delta-aminolevulic acid (ALA), porphobilinogen (PBG) and porphyrins and fecal porphyrins measurements did not show significant difference among all studied groups. The activities of ALA-dehydratase (ALA-D), uroporphyrinogen-I-synthase (URO-I-S) and uroporphyrinogen-III-synthase (URO-III-S) were monitored in peripheral erythrocytes. From the enzymes measured, only ALA-D levels in groups B and C were significantly depressed (p < 0.002) compared with normal subjects. The decrease in ALA-D correlated with the degree of neuropathy
Plantar pain is not always fasciitis
The case is described of a patient with chronic plantar pain, diagnosed as fasciitis, which was not improved by conventional treatment. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed flexor hallucis longus tenosynovitis, which improved after local glucocorticoid injection
