Incomprehension en route to Jerusalem (Mk8:22–10:52)

The second part of the Gospel according to Mark (8:22-10:52) is a narration about Jesus and his disciples travelling from the north of the Lake of Galilee to Jerusalem in the south. On the narrated journey, the disciples follow Jesus and he teaches them, but they do not understand his teaching. For the implied audience the story about the incomprehension of the disciples becomes a negative example of how not to react on Jesus’s teaching and the journey itself a macro-metaphor explaining how one should follow Jesus

Problems on the interpretation of reconciliation dictions in Paul In this essay the Pauline passages on 'reconciliation'/katallage, Romans 5:10f; 2 Corinthians 5;18v, 20 are discussed. It is also argued that Romans 3:25 carmot be used to prove that Paul interpreted Jesus' death hupér hemon/panton as a sacrifice (cf the previous article in HTS 42, 257- 265)

This publication is with permission of the rights owner (De Gruyter) freely accessible. How do metaphoric texts interact with their argumentative context? After explaining the use and functioning of metaphors in communicative acts, the essay focusses on similes and parables as extended metaphors. Mark 3:22–30 is studied in detail, examining the function of the metaphors used in the argumentative dispute. The example shows that parables and similes can have different functions in arguments. As comparative illustration, they can support the argument, but the solution of the dispute can also be expressed in metaphor only. In both cases however, metaphoric speech is based on analogy and servient to the surrounding argument. Peer Reviewe

Tradicio-historical problems on 'reconciliation' in PaulIn a short Afrikaans essay Breytenbach summerizes the findings of a recent investigation on the background of Paul's use of katallage (cf Cilliers Breytenbach, KATALLAGE: Eine Studie zur paulinischen Soteriologie , to appear in WMANT Neukirchener Verlag). liie Pauline usage has its roots in the diplomatic language of the Hellenistic era. Paul the legatus or presbeĂşs (2 Cor 5:20) uses this concept to explain his function of mediating God's message of reconciliation to man (2 Cor 5:18f). True to his general presuppositions, Paul re-interprets the profane concept of katallage by stating that the death of Christ 'for us' (2 Cor 5:14) made reconciliation possible (2 Cor 5:19; Rm 5:9f)

In presenting philological readings of spatial metaphors in ancient texts and their reception based on theoretical approaches to metaphor, this is a pioneering study which also bears testimony to the increasing interest in the potential and cognitive functions of metaphor in literary studies. The individual studies offer a representative synopsis of current theories on spatial metaphors and encompass applications to literary texts from a number of genres and languages ranging from wisdom texts and philosophical treatises to tragedy and from Ancient Egyptian to Shakespearean English, thus spanning almost 3000 years of human thought and language. Based on this framework of theory and practice, this volume collects a series of papers originally delivered at a conference entitled Raum-Metaphern in antiken Texten und deren Rezeption, organized by research group (C-2) Space and Metaphor in Cognition, Language and Texts of the Excellence Cluster 264 Topoi — The Formation and Transformation of Space and Knowledge in Ancient Civilizations in Berlin in June 2014

This article investigates Paul’s use of baptism as a spatial metaphor. Against the background of the usage of [...] in Ancient Greek it is suggested that Paul uses the word in a unique metaphorical way. Instances of Paul metaphorically employing the term in phrases such as “being emerged in to the body of Christ” (1 Kor 12:13), “being emerged in Christ” (Gal 3:28) and “being emerged in the death of Christ” (Rom 6:3–5) are investigated and their implications are discussed in light of current metaphor theories
