Domestic violence is a highly prevalent issue in the United States. The influences of cultural values and religious beliefs make the Arab and Muslim American women a vulnerable population for domestic violence. Among these influences, sexist gender role attitudes, and variance in the definition of domestic violence contribute toward explaining domestic violence attitudes within this population. A systematic search, through PsychINFO and Google Scholar was conducted to identify literature that examines gender role attitudes, perceptions of domestic violence, and beliefs about domestic violence, among the Arab and Muslim populatio

The aim of this research is to examine the pre-service science teachers’ progress in structuring their argumentation components during the STEM education practices. In the research were worked with 9 pre-service science teachers who are 3rd grade students and took the course of 'Science Laboratory Practices' in a state university. The research is a case study. In the research, structured and unstructured activities were applied for 9 weeks. In structured practices, instructions were followed to show how simple machines are constructed. Unstructured practices were based on the design of pre-service science teachers. The data of the research is obtained through voice recordings, unstructured observation. Argumentation components were examined according to the descriptive analysis approach. As a result of analysis of obtained data; pre-service science teachers have made great progress in constructing argumentation components (claim, evidence, reasoning and rebuttal), and the average score of the rebuttal was found to be lower than the other components. The results obtained from this study demonstrate that STEM education is an effective approach to improving the argumentation skill. Argumentation takes part in engineering design processes which have great importance in STEM practices; given its major role in identifying problems, development of possible solutions and determination, evaluation and discussion of most plausible ones. Therefore argumentation approach can be included as part of STEM education. Keywords: STEM education, argumentation, science education, pre-service science teacher

Background: Dirofilaria immitis and Dirofilaria repens are the most common species of filarial nematodes described in the dogs. A single-step multiplex PCR was applied to detect and differentiate simultaneously and unequivocally D. immitis and D. repens on DNA extracted from canine peripheral blood and besides to detect the seroprevalance of D. immitis by ELISA in Elazig Province, Turkey. A PCR detection of the Wolbachia, which plays an important role in D. immitis biology and contributes to the inflammatory pathology of the heartworm, was also applied for the first time in Turkey. Methods: A total of 161 whole blood and sera samples were collected from stray dogs and stored at -20 °C until used. After DNA extraction, all samples were processed with Dirofilaria primers by multiplex-PCR and Wolbachia primers by conventional PCR besides ELISA for serology. The amplification was performed using a set of primers designed on a portion of the small subunit ribosomal RNA gene of the mitochondrion (12S rDNA). Results: Three of the examined dogs (1.8%) were found to be infected with only D. immitis, one (0.6%) with D. repens and three (1.8%) with both parasites. Besides, 10 out of 161 dogs (6.2%) were found infected with Wolbachia sp. Finaly, the seroprevalence of dirofilariosis in the examined dogs was found to be 3.7% (6/161). Conclusion: Although dirofilariosis is not a serious problem in the region, the stray dogs still continue to be a source of infection.

Co-design and implementation of community-based engineering enriched science units: Exploration of pre-service science teachers' professional development

In recent years, many countries have revised their curricula to improve scientific inquiry skills and to develop the engineering practices of K-12 students, mostly within the context of science topics. However, there are not enough studies in the literature on what the content of science units integrated with en-gineering practices should be. There is also a gap in the literature regarding the kind of professional development (PD) training teachers should receive. Considering this gap, for the current study, pre-service science teachers (PSTs) developed Community Based Engineering (CBE)-Enriched Science Units within the context of a PD program. Then, they implemented these units in middle school science classes or science applications classes. The profes-sional development of the pre-service teachers during these units' development and implementation process was closely monitored and the obtained findings were presented to promote both science teacher education and engineering education. In this way, the knowledge, beliefs, attitudes, and class-room practices of PSTs regarding CBE-enriched science teaching, and their perceptions of middle school students' learning outcomes were investigated and revealed. Data were collected from 14 volunteer PSTs in a public university in Istanbul, Turkey. The data collection tools were semi-structured interviews, developed units, and reflection papers. As a result, 3 cases came to the fore: participants whose CBE-enriched science teaching self-efficacy increased (4 PSTs), remained unchanged (8 PSTs), and decreased (2 PSTs). Findings are discussed using the Interconnected Model of Professional Growth. (c) 2023 Elsevier Ltd. No full text
WOS: 000379745500009Background: Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES), is characterized by headache, lethargy, visual complaints and epileptic seizures. Brain imaging findings include abnormalities of the white matter and the grey matter. The diagnosis currently relies on clinical manifestations and typical neuroimaging findings. Different pathophysiological factors can play role in the disease process. The purpose of this study is to review causes, clinical aspects, imaging-laboratory findings and prognosis in patients diagnosed with PRES. Method: Patients who showed clinical and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings consistent with PRES between January 2011 and December 2014 were included in the study. Patient data were collected retrospectively from hospital records. Results: Total number of patients was 22 (18 female, 4 male). Median age was 28 years (range 18-84). Comorbid conditions included eclampsia (n=10, 45%), pre-eclampsia (n=1, 4.5%), HELLP (hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, low platelet count) syndrome (n=1), primary kidney disease (n=3, 13%). Acute elevation of blood pressure was found in 9 patients (40%). Five patients (22%) were using steroids or immunosupressive drugs. Typical PRES imaging pattern with bilateral parieto-occipital involvement was present in 15/22 patients (68%) and occipital involvement was present in 3/22 patients (14%). Atypical neuroimaging features included frontal involvement in 10 patients (45%), basal ganglia gray matter lesion in 1 patient (4%) and the cerebellum was involved in 3 patients (14%). Serum LDH level was high in 13 patients (59%). Hypoalbuminemia was detected in 12 patients (54%). Conclusion: Although hypertension is thoughtto be the main pathologic factor in the disease process, endothelial dysfunction seems to be equally important
