    Dynamics and structure of an aging binary colloidal glass

    We study aging in a colloidal suspension consisting of micron-sized particles in a liquid. This system is made glassy by increasing the particle concentration. We observe samples composed of particles of two sizes, with a size ratio of 1:2.1 and a volume fraction ratio 1:6, using fast laser scanning confocal microscopy. This technique yields real-time, three-dimensional movies deep inside the colloidal glass. Specifically, we look at how the size, motion and structural organization of the particles relate to the overall aging of the glass. Particles move in spatially heterogeneous cooperative groups. These mobile regions tend to be richer in small particles, and these small particles facilitate the motion of nearby particles of both sizes.Comment: 7 pages; submitted to Phys. Rev. E.     A clinical pilot study on the effect of the probiotic Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus TOM 22.8 strain in women with vaginal dysbiosis

    Lactobacilli with probiotic features play an essential role in maintaining a balanced vaginal microbiota and their administration has been suggested for the treatment and prevention of vaginal dysbiosis. The present study was aimed to in vitro and in vivo investigate the probiotic potential of the Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus TOM 22.8 strain, isolated from the vaginal ecosystem of a healthy woman. For this purpose, safety and functional properties were in depth evaluated. The strain exhibited a broad spectrum of antagonistic activity against vaginal pathogens; adhesion capacity to both the vaginal VK2/E6E7 and the intestinal Caco-2 cells; anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities, suggesting its promising probiotic features. In addition, an in vivo pilot-study was planned. Based on both clinical and microbiological parameters, the oral or vaginal strain administration, determined a significant pathogens reduction after 10 days of administration and a maintenance of eubiosis up to 30 days after the end of the treatment. Therefore, the L. rhamnosus TOM 22.8 strain can be proposed as valuable oral and/or vaginal treatment for vaginal dysbiosis

    The mainstay of management for short bowel syndrome (SBS) is to promote access to the best quality of care provided by the intestinal rehabilitation program (IRP) in specialized centres. When treating SBS patients, the main goal is to minimize disease-associated complications, as well as achieve enteral autonomy. Surgical strategies should be selected cautiously upon the actual state of the bowel with respect to what it is clinically relevant for that specific patient. To this aim, a personalized and multidisciplinary approach for such a complex syndrome is needed

    Analytical study of non Gaussian fluctuations in a stochastic scheme of autocatalytic reactions

    A stochastic model of autocatalytic chemical reactions is studied both numerically and analytically. The van Kampen perturbative scheme is implemented, beyond the second order approximation, so to capture the non Gaussianity traits as displayed by the simulations. The method is targeted to the characterization of the third moments of the distribution of fluctuations, originating from a system of four populations in mutual interaction. The theory predictions agree well with the simulations, pointing to the validity of the van Kampen expansion beyond the conventional Gaussian solution.Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, submitted to Phys.     Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) for ovarian cancer recurrence: systematic review and meta-analysis.

    Background: Ovarian cancer is the first cause of death among gynecological malignancies with a high incidence of recurrence. Different treatment options are suitable to prolong the survival rate of these patients. Over the last years, one of the most intriguing methods, adopted in different oncologic centers worldwide, is the hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC). Methods: A meta-analysis was performed to value the role of HIPEC for ovarian cancer recurrence. Search strategy was conducted with a combination of the following keywords: "ovarian recurrence, ovarian cancer recurrence, peritoneal cancer recurrence, ovarian recurrence AND HIPEC, secondary cytoreduction HIPEC". Seven studies were selected for analysis. Results: In women with recurrent ovarian cancer (ROC), the use of HIPEC in addition to cytoreductive surgery and chemotherapy significantly improved 1-year overall survival (OS) when compared to protocols without HIPEC (OR 2.42; 95% CI, 1.06-5.56; P=0.04; I2=4%). The improvement in OS was maintained significant also after 2, 3 and 5 years respectively (OR 3.33; 95% CI, 1.81-6.10; P<0.01; I2=0%), (OR 4.22; 95% CI, 2.07-8.60; P<0.01; I2=52%), (OR 5.17; 95% CI, 1.40-19.09; P=0.01; I2=82%). Conclusions: HIPEC seems to have an effective role to prolong survival in patients affected by ROC

    When does cyclic dominance lead to stable spiral waves?

    Species diversity in ecosystems is often accompanied by characteristic spatio-temporal patterns. Here, we consider a generic two-dimensional population model and study the spiraling patterns arising from the combined effects of cyclic dominance of three species, mutation, pair-exchange and individual hopping. The dynamics is characterized by nonlinear mobility and a Hopf bifurcation around which the system's four-phase state diagram is inferred from a complex Ginzburg-Landau equation derived using a perturbative multiscale expansion. While the dynamics is generally characterized by spiraling patterns, we show that spiral waves are stable in only one of the four phases. Furthermore, we characterize a phase where nonlinearity leads to the annihilation of spirals and to the spatially uniform dominance of each species in turn. Away from the Hopf bifurcation, when the coexistence fixed point is unstable, the spiraling patterns are also affected by the nonlinear diffusion

    Treatment continuation and satisfaction in women using combined oral contraception with nomegestrol acetate and oestradiol: a multicentre, prospective cohort study (BOLERO)

    Objective: The aim of the study was to examine treatment continuation and satisfaction over 1 year among women receiving nomegestrol acetate (NOMAC)/oestradiol (E2) combined oral contraception (COC) in real-world clinical practice. Methods: The 17 beta-Estradiol and Nomegestrol Acetate (BOLERO) Study is an observational, non-interventional, prospective, multicentre cohort study of premenopausal women (aged 18-50 years) who received prescription NOMAC/E2 (2.5 mg/1.5 mg) for contraception during routine clinical practice. Assessments were carried out at enrolment and at 3, 6 and 12 months. Probability of treatment continuation through 12 months (primary outcome) was examined using Kaplan-Meier survival analysis. Secondary outcomes included treatment satisfaction, menstrual cycle-related symptoms, libido and adverse events (AEs). Results: Of 298 enrolled women, 292 were evaluable. The probability of NOMAC/E2 continuation through 12 months was 73.7% (95% confidence interval [CI] 68.0%, 78.5%). Satisfaction with NOMAC/E2 increased from 56.9% (37/65) of women at initial evaluation to 89.2% (58/65) of women at 12 months. Physician ratings at 12 months showed satisfactory to very satisfactory in 84.0% (168/200) of women. Libido was not affected. Menstrual cycle-related symptoms significantly declined from enrolment (6.04 +/- 4.32) to 3 months (3.25 +/- 3.05) and 12 months (2.62 +/- 2.74; p < .0001). Treatment-related AEs were reported by 38.7% (113/292) of women. Conclusion: The real-world experience of women receiving NOMAC/E2 indicated very good treatment continuation, high satisfaction and significantly improved menstrual cycle-related symptoms

    A class of theories of gravitation that naturally incorporates preferred frames of reference is presented. The underlying space-time geometry consists of a partial parallelization of space-time and has properties of Riemann-Cartan as well as teleparallel geometry. Within this geometry, the kinematic quantities of preferred frames are associated with torsion fields. Using a variational method, it is shown in which way action functionals for this geometry can be constructed.
